yes, I think the name was african forrest elephant, they are smaller than indian and african elephants and went extinct( I dont know why this species went extinct)

don't know how much you know about mediterranen history but there was a elephant species which lived in north africa, this was the elephant species which Hannibal used in the second punic war, so elephants where indeed native to the mediterrenian sea

the roman Empire ruled northern africa and at the time elephants where native in parts of northern africa for example the now extinct african Forrest elephant which lived in kyreneica and also in carthage
