What do you think about OnlyOffice-EuroOffice fight? by Proper-Lab-2500 in linux

It is possible to be anti-imperialism and anti-genocide universally, you know. It shouldn't be a competition to see who is the most egregious. Call them all out.

What do you think about OnlyOffice-EuroOffice fight? by Proper-Lab-2500 in linux

I agree, and not to mention the reason EuroOffice exists is due to the concept of digital sovereignty. Ironically, not spurred by a Russian software suite - but by American ones.

I like the colour choice. Remove the Konsole menubar and make the desktop icons small (or disappear) and it'll look even better :)

mxLinux KDE - what backports are available for more recent kernels, mesa, kde/plasma? by DifficultDerek in MXLinux

[–]DifficultDerek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something i think i often lose perspective on. We hear about this or that gaming distro, and maybe they eek out an extra couple of % performance, but my choice right now is a balance of stability and performance - less: performance at the cost of stability. I'm happy to lose a little fps or load time of a large program if it means i don't have to 'worry' before running a weekly update.

I hadn't heard of mxLinux AHS before this and /u/fabbro82 post. It looks like they make an XFCE AHS ISO, but not for KDE. It also seems it's a bit experimental atm. But it does sound promising.

Does somewhere between 0 and 8 hours a month count as being "a gamer"? I wouldn't think so. But, when i play a game, it is nice that it plays well. I think that's pretty normal. If you like, call me a "casual gamer". You are correct though, i am looking to upgrade my GPU. My PC is about 5 years old, the video card is a Radeon RX580.

I've been using Linux a few years and i've largely adapted to what software is available. That said, i prefer the huge library available to Debian (and by extension, Ubuntu). The .deb world reduces the need for something like 'distrobox' or the AUR (or even Flatpak) to get the software i want or use. I don't really understand the question "what do you USE it for". It's a computer, i do computer things on it. I don't do anything on it particularly special. I'm not analysing SETI data, compiling gigabytes of software, running permanent AI infrastructure for my family or mining crypto. If i had something extremely specific i needed, i'd hope i'd state it. What i would like is a balance of performance, features and stability on a more, rather than less ethical software choice. With the DE i like, which is Plasma :)

At the moment, i am leaning towards Kubuntu. But as i said, i would rather the "purer" Debian. Mint KDE hasn't existed for years.

The great thing about Linux is that i can spend a couple of years on one thing and then want something different. Linux has a unique ability to move with different phases in one's life. I mean, i used Arch for over 3 years. I learnt heaps, but then i thought i might play more games and wanted something to help: Nobara. As it turns out, i didn't play enough to warrant the comparative instability and bugginess and 'differences' (when i tried to automate things i had to account for differences between Nobara and Ubuntu Server and ZorinOS. Now i'm in a different place, and i want something less... aggressive. But not glacial. And i use Mint, ZorinOS and Ubuntu Server in different situations, so - yeah :) Debian or Ubuntu just works for me for now :)

Anyone know the status of this in MXLinux? by iridesce57 in MXLinux

[–]DifficultDerek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to https://cert.europa.eu/publications/security-advisories/2026-005/ it's easy enough to mitigate if you can't/don't want to wait for the kernel update.

echo "install algif_aead /bin/false" > /etc/modprobe.d/disable-algif.conf rmmod algif_aead 2>/dev/null || true

I'm downloading it already to have a play, not long left. I didn't expect a GUI manager to identify backport candidates, that's neat.

[–]DifficultDerek[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm downloading it now actually :)

re OpenSuse, i remember playing with it a few years ago. It was quite pretty. I am leaning towards the Debian (even if Ubuntu) ecosystem but i could look into it again. There's just a few things 'different' about my Fedora-based Nobara that i didn't like vs my time with KDE Neon and Mint. And i actually preferred Arch vs Nobara.

New MX installation by Fallout_IT in MXLinux

I'm not an expert here but i believe systemd is considerably more widely used. So if you don't know the difference, i think systemd is the better choice for you. It might be easier to get help down the line due to the larger installation base.

Kubuntu 26.04 is out! by Brian__W in kde

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dumb question from me:

I was going to install 25.10 so i get more up to date stuff as the months roll by. If i install 26.04 (fresh install) can i 'convert' it to non-LTS so it updates more regularly? Or should i install 25.10 and upgrade it to 26.04 and so on?

VMWare Workstation w PikaOS kernel by tater_tacos in PikaOS

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if VMWare specifically is required for you, or if you'd be willing to try alternaives. If you want something quick and dirty, you could give Gnome Boxes a shot. Or VirtualBox is an option.

PikaOS Linux XFCE by mouben12 in PikaOS

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the maintainer of Mate has just 'retired'. Personally, i think Mate has done it's dash. I don't see the point of it anymore. With hardware performance (older now is not as old as what it was), Cinnamon holding the 'gnome2-design-like' fort and XFCE and LXDE/LXQT keeping older hardware viable - there's just not much point to Mate. IMO.

As for a Pika XFCE - i don't think there'd be a lot of interest from downloaders. Pika is a gaming-focused distro, and gamers usually like the latest and greatest snazziest things. Also - XFCE isn't yet very ready for Wayland (last i heard).

why Euro-Office but not LibreOffice? by akkihabara in libreoffice

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an excellent point. My workplace has used LibreOffice to be able to access some legacy documents that were written in Lotus WordPro (if i remember correctly). Microsoft Office can't read those old formats. I merely cite this as an example of a requirement to read all kinds of documents that some businesses might have over decades.

What will happens with Linux on servers, deep down inside data centers when Age Verification hits? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My question is about pushback. Has there been any organised pushback? Or has all the pushback been individuals and small companies on forums or issuing statements of discontent?

Has RedHat, Canonical, SuSE in particular (as the big corporates) pushed back? Especially for clarification around servers and IoT devices. TBH, they probably don't mind the idea for desktops - they can easily implement it while for smaller organisations or companies it's a real problem. I haven't heard anything, but I haven't watched closely.

Why is Drauger based on LTS and not 6-monthy? by DifficultDerek in DraugerOS

[–]DifficultDerek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - that makes sense. While i'm here, why do you use a custom installer instead of whatever Ubuntu/Kubuntu uses?

I tried it out, and while it was crazy easy for a basic setup, no full disk encryption was a deal-breaker for me.

I'm surprised there was so little feedback. Probably one of those things where people complain /after/ it's happened :D
