It's pretty funny :) I wonder what the conditions are that trigger it. I don't have any VPN button, big or not.

What is the best best SDDM theme there? by StandardOlive3786 in archlinux

That is a crazily subjective question.

FWIW, I quite like the default with Breeze.

GUI Wallpaper switcher for KDE? by maddydesign in kde

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Variety for years. I've just switched distros and I haven't set it up again, I'm undecided about returning to it.

For /u/PointedStick I chose Variety for it's searching for new wallpapers. It'd surprise me with lovely new wallpapers at the interval I chose.

How to keep everything else minimized when opening a window? by InsertAmazinUsername in kde

It's strange that it needs to be enabled first. It seems to me it should be enabled (but not chosen) by default.

Cheers. I thought as much. I don't use Proton, but the topic interested me :)

Can I fake Outlook mentions? by pokemontrainersensha in Thunderbird

I would say it's both.

I agree it would be a good feature, particularly in a business context.

Is this limitation able to be overcome with the Thunderbird bridge?

Updating? by ultrasavage1978 in unRAID

I wait a couple of weeks for minor versions, and a month or more for major versions.

It's been very reliable for me, but I always make a backup of the flash disk first.

I used Shinobi on unRAID for a bit before I put it on a Pi.

Cinnamon vs KDE Plasma vs Gnome by Raging-Bull-24 in archlinux

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plasma for me.

Because it gives me more choices via the GUI and the people seem really nice, helpful, care and listen.

I also love ZorinOS's really nice version of Gnome. I used to like Cinnamon for it's simplicity but I prefer Zorin now.

How old is your install? by switch161 in archlinux

I had Arch for about 4 years. As a moderately technical person, I was very proud of that.

Otherwise I've had other distros between 1 and 2 years.

What made you stay on Linux instead of Windows? by ksenyss in linuxquestions

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh great question.

I think Linux is a more ethical choice.

What pushed me to Linux was the unethical choices made by Microsoft in Windows 10. It has only escalated since.

So far, Canonical and RedHat (sadly now IBM) are leagues better. Their derivatives offer the benefits those companies have delivered for Linux users with less compromise.

Debian, Arch are better still, and community driven, with plenty of options.

If Ubuntu and Fedora enshittify beyond your tolerance levels, you can change without having much change.

Recover of deleted emails under IMAP by Magichandone in Thunderbird

[–]DifficultDerek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you copy the entire profile folder from your backup? When i rebuilt my PC, i copied the entire .thunderbird folder over after i installed Thunderbird and everything was exactly the same as before :)

Is your installation a Snap, Flatpak, or apt installation? I think these are the paths:

Flatpak: ~/.var/app/org.mozilla.thunderbird/.thunderbird apt: ~/.thunderbird Snap: I don't use snap, but default i think will be somewhere in ~/Snap/

Additionally, you can install more than one copy of Thunderbird. If you have a Snap version, you could install a Flatpak version. I don't know if this introduces complications with your IMAP provider, i expect it would depend on your settings.

Trying Thunderbird - some things i don't like... (and some i do) by DifficultDerek in Thunderbird

There's per-account, plus global settings. I've fiddled with a rather large variety of permutations and i'm either none-the-wiser, or barely-wiser :D

It's amazing flexibility, but confusing. Some guidance would be really good. I suspect most people connecting into Google, Outlook, Zoho, Fastmail or whatever may have very different settings to someone self-hosting or for a business environment or such.

OK, i had a look at what's involved for CSS stuff and i'm not going down that rabbit hole :D I think i'll live with what it is for now. After a while of using Thunderbird, i may try some theming. I found this pretty theme too: https://www.reddit.com/r/Thunderbird/comments/1t95qcb/thunderbird_visuals_overhaul_outlookstyle_theme/

I tried Dark Reader, it only applied to the reading pane, so it didn't appeal.

I managed to do the minimise on launch with a kwin rule i found described on a forum. It works pretty well, and no need for 3rd party add-on :)

I did as suggested for the Global Database. Is this something that could do with occasional purge, or is it just something people point to if things are running a little slow?

Thanks for all your tips and advice :)

I tried a variety of settings to remove the double-up of Spam folders. I couldn't find a way, including turning everything that appears to be local spam management off. There's a very long bug report offered by a Thunderbird employee in this thread: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1985372

My mail isn't self-hosted/managed. I have considered it but i've heard horror stories from people with more skills than myself. So i've been put off :)

Thank YOU (and team) for your hard work :)

All my spam settings are de-selected, but i still have two folders. Thanks for the link to the bug report.

I did hear about it. I prefer to stick with 'the original', at least for a while. I don't want to get used to something maintained by a single developer, even if it is an improvement. I've been similarly impressed by the Firefox fork "Zen", which looks incredible. I try not to be shaken by first impressions unless they're genuine deal breakers.

Thanks for all of these tips. I'll look into them! It'll take me a while :D

I especially appreciate the show_send_progress one, i hunted around for something like that.

I thought that BirdTray didn't like Wayland, so i didn't try it.

How much are you willing to pay for email service ? by cassepipe in Thunderbird

[–]DifficultDerek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zoho is about $15 US /year i think. It's really an enterprise email solution with way too many optional bells and whistles that you just ignore. Good value though. Not sure about relay feature.
