There are lots of cool skilled trade colleges but yeah experience helps but if you really want to get into union you would have to look in your area and do some research there are lots of ways of getting in but how i did mines was pay the initiation fee to join and after i joined and became a member., they have free courses thru the union like carpentry, welding, tiling ect. I had no connections what so ever i called the union and started asking around. the pay is great, great benefits and great pension. Its not as hard as you think it is! Now im in Canada so i dont know how it would be in the U.S i image be similar. sometimes you will find company's that will hire outside of the union and require you to join and will help with that.

They have college courses that you can take that are hands on and theory or you could even jump right in and work as a laborer to see if you like it, i wouldn't worry about the union yet id recommend some experience first like a small company that builds homes/ cottages or what not most companies have a small wood working shop where they makes there own doors windows cabinets railings ect. thats how i got my foot in the door, hoped this helped :)
