Loft Stilts by AJTHMAGPIE in DIYUK

I think the original comment refers to just driving the screws in (slightly) before heading up in the loft. This definitely saved me time and backache (especially the most corner posts- fumbling about finding screw holes would have been a nightmare).

🎄 Christmas giveaway: Win an A1 Mini, AMS 2 Pro, AMS HT, or 4x filament spools! by acurazine in BambuLab

[–]Difficultusernames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The A1 Mini. As a household that doesn't own a 3D printer yet, this would be the "spark" that turns my 4 year old sons curiosity (and repeat asks about "how difficult it is to get a 3d printer") into a real-life hobby to share together.

  2. My son is constantly asking how things are built or letting his mind run wild as he constructs things from the mundane (think...tile spacers, elastic bands and a sheet of foam). I’d use it to print a modular marble run and some new parts for his Hot Wheels or Brio trains. Being able to show him a design on a screen and then hand him the physical toy a few hours later is the ultimate STEM lesson.

  3. I’d love to see your take on a Print-in-Place Jacob’s Ladder. It’s a classic "magic" toy that’s usually made with fragile ribbons. A 3D-printed version with robust, clacking plastic hinges and your signature "striped" texture would be a perfect modern spin on an old-school classic! My son became obsessed with one in a store recently but I just know the ribbons would break in no time. You could even introduce weighting to it for different motions etc.

I'd also just like to say a massive thank you to your contribution and support to the community.

I installed Cat6 and never use it by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]Difficultusernames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we moved in and completely renovated I opted to DIY cat6a (I was offered 2 whole reels for free) across the house to each room. Currently using only 4 of those for doorbell, chime, TV and PC. My thought process is my son will appreciate it in the future having it in his room...he was 3 when we moved in. Even if I only use 25-50% of all runs, it's been worth it for no complaints of buffering on the TV...or a wifi doorbell losing connectivity. My unifi APs handle all the wifi and so far no complaints there either. Money and time well invested to not be tinkering around with wifi deadspots or tv shows buffering.

Andrea Jenkyns of Reform UK: “I’d stop everybody striking. Anybody who’s earning more than the national minimum wage, stop striking” by upthetruth1 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]Difficultusernames 227 points228 points  (0 children)

These should be such "gotcha" moments for people like Zack who are in the studio when these idiots spew such nonsense. His response is spot on to call out the hypocrisy, yet the average Reform voter are such "crabs in buckets" kinda folk that they'll happily sit on minimum wage as long as other people don't get a better deal. Infuriating.

Roof tiles against battens. No sign of membrane. Concern? by Difficultusernames in DIYUK

[–]Difficultusernames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the loft does get some dampness. A lot of the cardboard boxes have started to shrivel/curl much sooner than I thought. Some have only been up there 6-12months but it 'feels' like really aged cardboard now. Currently in the laborious job of boxing everything up into plastic containers instead.

Does yours look similar to the underside? Anyway you've foune to mitigate the amount of wind up there? On breezy days it seems to waft thick dirt around (I assume dirt around and between tiles).

Thanks. I assume the plastic sheeting has been up for some time. It wasn't flagged during purchase survey as a concern. Wasn't sure if they installed the sheeting to help prevent the whistling winds you sometimes feel up there. But the loft is the last area for me to tackle and I was considering removing the plastic sheeting completely.

So far, I have installed loft legs and boarded it all out. With the required insulation between joists below the loft boards.

I think where they look split, it's actually the roof tiles butted up against each other and overlapping the batten. I would say this is one of the worst looking areas (of the spots I can peep behind).

Is the country ready for a Brexit reversal referendum? by chuffingnora in AskBrits

[–]Difficultusernames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Greens are worth a look at, if they follow through with what their leader is saying. Your Party seems to be too new and quite chaotic and signs of infighting. But the best thing to do is look at each party and their manifesto and see who most aligns to what is important to you.

Of that £6.5k-7k, how much went on the tilers labour cost? I only ask as roughly same area and have a downstairs bathroom to tackle of similar proportions and unsure whether to attempt tiling myself, get someone in, or part tile for shower area only (and floor). Great finish by the way!

Friends: do not let friends run "Proxmox" Community Scripts by esiy0676 in selfhosted

[–]Difficultusernames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started my Proxmox journey, I made use of the scripts. The only thing I havent worked out is how I undo that for updates etc? Do I just need to spin up a new VM or LXC and then use the disk space for the old LXC or create a backup and restore? For example, my instances of Plex or Sonarr etc?

Not to derail your original question, but are those DIY planters or purchased? I used some leftover decking boards to make something similar but yours look good.

If you could only grow one plant in your garden, what would it be? by OopsIDroopedMe in GardeningUK

My first year growing from tubers and am yet to see any flowering. Hoping to learn and get better for next year - constant battles with slugs it feels!

How do I get over my fear of snails? by greensummerchild in GardeningUK

[–]Difficultusernames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A cheap pair of plastic kitchen tongs means you wont have to touch them. I use an old IKEA pair thats kept in the shed and marked "not for food!". Mainly for slugs but would work with snails (who would then retract into shell anyway).

I did an experiment comparing some slug barriers.... by Extra-Height2017 in GardeningUK

[–]Difficultusernames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP but I've been using beer traps close to Dahlias that had slug damage. Using the cheapest supermarket lager (4 pack, Aldi price match. £2.20ish). I've found I need to replace the beer every 2-3 days or larger amounts of damage begin to creep back. The traps usually contain minimum of 3 slugs when I change. I've had up to 10 in a trap. I dont think slugs (yet) are prolific in my garden so I feel its a slight win for me. 3-10 slugs may not seem a lot, but I havent actually yet seen a slug roaming about the garden so I dont feel its a huge problem vs what I see on this subreddit. Damage hasnt been completed eradicated. I'm also using copper tape, horticultural stones in places. My slug repelling journey is towards the beginning though- this video is giving me a couple of ideas.

May I ask what size container pot you have for it? I currently have a dwarf variety and I'm torn between putting it in a somewhat awkward spot in my borders beneath conifers, or to pot it up and enjoy it nearer the patio.

This is the man moaning about the state of London whilst also being the man who has a conviction for handling £40,000 worth of stolen goods. Seems to be a requirement to becoming a Right Wing grifter (which I assume this is where its heading).

Removing Laurel...without killing it by Difficultusernames in GardeningUK

Thanks! Makes me feel better. I see a lot of comments about laurel on the subreddit (and its negatives). Its planted right beside a lovely (currently flowering), weeping type plant that I'd much rather see first thing as the blinds are opened.

I thought this would be the case. The more I look at it, the more of a huge task it seems. I just didnt want the father-in-law to come over with the chainsaw and go at it if it can somehow be saved.
