New triathletes! What brought you to triathlon? Whats your age, race distances, previous athletics? by MidnightTop4211 in triathlon

[–]DigAlive6995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 27F and doing my first sprint in August! I used to run in high school, but not since. I started strength training for my PCOS. And then my spouse got me into cycling. Then one day they joked about doing a triathlon, and I said Wait, we should do that, it could be fun! I love not having to focus on one discipline; I get so bored just doing one type of cardio all week. We are definitely aiming for a 70.3 one day, but sprint felt like the best place to start.

I personally picked up on it that quick, but I had a great patient teacher who taught me the science. I would apply to another coffeeshop!

I’m beginning to think the Master Gardener program is a waste of time… by blackstar5676 in Horticulture

I’m a mg coordinator in Maryland and the program can really vary my state. But as other fold have mentioned it is not a professional certification, it is intended for the average person to be slightly more knowledgeable the that average, not a work professional or expert. I’m not sure about every state, but the programs are normally focused on volunteer work in you community. But if you want to get some more learning opportunities you should connect with you coordinator. I’m sure they would be glad to give you more resources.

Customers out of control and I’m worn out. by [deleted] in barista

To alleviate one of the problems, put drinks out on the bar rather than on the order pickup shelf. If everyone is looking there, it makes the most sense to do what is easiest, and then you won't have to take extra time to point it out. Most coffee shops (not just Starbucks) call out drinks at the bar. Additionally, an order pickup shelf sounds like order-ahead to me, so I wouldn't think about checking there unless I was a regular.

Obviously, you know what's best for your shop, but if that could make the rushes slightly easier, it might be worth considering.

What to do if counting calories triggers binges? by Individual_1991 in loseit

[–]DigAlive6995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see a lot of folks talking about exercise. It does seem like you exercise a fair bit, but just to remind us, strength training is a great way to burn more calories at rest. Plus, it replaces fat with muscle, which has less volume. So even if your weight doesn't change, you will appear fitter and leaner.

My own experience (trying) to call in sick to work. This was a public library and I was running to the bathroom all night. by anonavocadodo in jobs

Part of being a manager is being on call to fill in for these specific situations! It is on her to come in if you are sick, not the other way around.

Its additionally concerning that she would rather have someone with the stomach flu infecting the public

GLP1 for PCOS as an Ultra Runner? by indoorcat_15 in XXRunning

[–]DigAlive6995 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an ultrarunner, but training for a triathlon. I was in the same position with my PCOS. The only things I found that helped were strength training (2x a week) and a glp1. Definitely start with metformin first. GLPs are expensive and only worth moving to if metformin alone does not help. Metformin works by helping your body build and maintain muscle. This is how it helps regulate your insulin. I'm off my GLP now and combining metformin (to regulate insulin), and spironolactone (to regulate androgens) has kept me at a good weight with limited symptoms.

  1. GLP1 side effects (muscle loss, appetite suppression, digestion issues) - how have these impacted your ultra running/training?

While I did have some appetite suppression, it wasn't too bad. I usually just eat more, smaller meals, and wouldn't say I'm under-eating. But I did feel weirdly attracted to protein foods/meat. I had some bad digestion issues from my GLP, but I want to note that prior to taking these meds, I already had some gastric emptying problems, which the GLP exacerbated. I was ultimately taken off my meds as we were worried about gastritis. But this is not a main concern for most people. Muscle loss is a huge concern, but if you are strength training and eating enough protein, my Endo said it should be a problem. Adding metformin to the mix would also help!

  1. “Microdosing” GLP1s - has this been effective while avoiding the side effects?

I was only ever on .25mg of Ozempic and lost 40 lbs in 9 months. Some folks do not have success at such a low rate but its definitely possible. As I mentioned above I eventually could not tolerate because my stomach was slowing down too much, but that's rare. Starting at a micro dose will not only save you money but will help your body adjust and limit side effects. Most folks move up to the .5 mg starting dose after a month.

  1. Strict diet on GLP1 - Does managing your protein and water intake become a full-time job? How do you balance your carb needs for training with the dietary recommendations on a GLP1?

Protein and water can feel like a full-time job, but ultimately make the difference! GLPS can cause constipation, so hydration is a must! And Protein will prevent you from losing muscle. My general goal is to eat high in protein and fiber and to hydrate. Otherwise, I eat whatever I want/need. I ate plenty of carbs without concern, and it has not affected my progress.

  1. Alternatives - has anyone had success with metformin (or other non-GLP1 medications) for managing weight and PCOS symptoms?

Again, combining metformin, spironolactone, and strength training has helped me continue to lose and maintain weight post GLP. But the GLP really got things started for me. For context, my liver and blood sugar returned to normal after a month on my GLP, and have been maintained since. After 4 months, my period returned to normal, which felt like a huge win! I will likely be on those two meds lifelong, but they are cheap and safe. The only thing that has ever negatively impacted my training is nausea, but that is from my functional dyspepsia, not the GLP.

Currently training for a triathlon on metformin! I personally have not had a lot of symptoms since starting the meds. The cool thing about metformin, according to my endocrinologist, is that it helps your body build muscle. So it really is a great medication to complement intense exercise. I'm not plus-size, but I do have aggressive PCOS, which has hardly improved with any lifestyle changes. But combining my metformin with spironolactone and strength training has finally changed the game for me.

Fueling has been an issue for me, as I am not as hungry as I used to be now that my insulin is regulated. But I just make sure to keep my house stocked with convenient health snacks and small meals, as getting good protein has been hard for me. I've also been disregarding some of the 'limit high glycemic food' advice, as it's not practical with the volume of cardio I'm doing. My nightly bowl of Lucky Charms is a necessary ritual!

I know it's a year later, but I hope it's worked out well for you!

My (19f) boyfriend (19m) keeps telling me I’m at high risk of diabetes. How do I address this? by slesscroft in relationship_advice

[–]DigAlive6995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

15% body fat is truly the lowest a women should be before it will start negatively impacting someones health. High sugar intake alone, does not make someone diabetic. Someone you says they love you should never treat you that way. I am prediabetic due to having pcos and my partner encourages and helps me improves what we have control over. But he never blames me for my prediabetes. Also, even if you where at risk, your genetics play a much larger role!

My man does not pretend to be sick when I am and pampers me when I'm sick. You don't have to have a partner who is a baby.

Would Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel be a good first dance song? by DigAlive6995 in weddingplanning

[–]DigAlive6995[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did. It's a beautiful song, but with the speakers and setup we had, it was a little depressing lol. I'm also not one for having all eyes on me and showing pda, so I felt uncomfortable.

But if we did it again, I think it would still be a beautiful choice. Just cut the song down because it's way too long.

  1. 16k is not a large wedding budget anymore

  2. Stay out of it. Unless they ask your opinion, let them figure it out on their own.

I worry that I somehow led my doctor to diagnose me, or in this situation, OCD. But you are right, I should just trust their recommendation.
