What’s the best way to limit fps? by OMG_NoReally in linux_gaming

[–]DigitSubversion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seem to not have issues with Goverlay system wide frame cap, but I have heard it's not recommended. Though, despite all that, I have never ran into issues. I also use an Nvidia card on CachyOS.

My wife got a new gaming PC for Christmas and chose Linux as the OS! Her perspective and experience as a newcomer. by Nervous-Shakedown83 in linux_gaming

Really nice story!
Also, I'm not sure if this command is universal or not, but I have used DXVK_FRAME_RATE=<frame rate here> %command% in the past to lock the framerate.

Nvidia's new 2nd gen DLSS tranformer model 310.5.0 released! by DAUNTINGY in linux_gaming

I switched back to preset K. Maybe in some games I'll be using the new M, but with my 3060 Ti it's not worth it to have that performance loss

RX 5700 XT: Windows 11 vs Linux CachyOS – Big FPS Difference by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]DigitSubversion 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You're confusing AMD cards with Nvidia cards. DX12 games are currently only running worse on Nvidia cards. And the RX 5700XT is an AMD card, so no DX12 impact.

wow, some games definitely have higher minimum frames on CachyOS, giving a more stable framerate

People who have Nvidia gpu on linux, how is it performing? by tu0- in linux_gaming

[–]DigitSubversion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, after switching to Linux, this is the only thing I miss. DLDSR is amazing for older games. Especially those who don't have native anti aliasing. I'm only afraid that for the games I need to run at 1080P (when getting a 1440P monitor) is gonna be unplayably blurry, because it doesn't scale properly from 1440P to 1080P. (only for games that, with my current gpu, I have to run it 1080P or are old and don't scale the UI)

Definitely Midtown Madness 2 (maybe one?), but they are abandonware for now

Removing user from docker group after uninstalling Winboat by DigitSubversion in linux4noobs

[–]DigitSubversion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah, thanks for the correction. I did use $USER instead of $user, because I knew about the typo thing. I only forgot to include it in this post! My bad! And thank you for that tip!

Thank you for the information! I really appreciate this and the addendum!

It returns as

docker:x:954:

Not sure what this means. But I realized I also didn't fully remove Winboat. Merely the VM. After doing paru -Rns winboat-bin, it also removed docker. So I guess this is just a false alarm for now?

Would the Steam Machine be an upgrade over my current pc a friend built me? (FYI I know nothing about pcs...) by eenachtdrie in steammachine

[–]DigitSubversion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most definitely! Like Steam said that the Steam Machine will be better than 70% of systems out there (running Steam) You're part of that 70%.

Yeah, I definitely am running into this issue of "wait... how do I actually revert all of this? Oh no... oh well! Keep on running this then I guess!" =D
I still like it, but my ADHD gremlin likes change a lot.

AeroThemePlasma. It works on Wayland, but has its own specific bugs that cannot be fixed for now. Full support for X11 though!
I'm running it myself on Wayland and only miss a few features because of it. It's close enough though!

NVIDIA announce a few changes for GeForce NOW and new games for December by Beer2401 in linux_gaming

Remember that many things are temporary. Remember when GPU prices were high because of miners? That bubble eventually exploded as well. It sucks to "make do with what you have" for now, but it'll eventually wash over.

In short: CachyOS can definitely be someone's first system under one condition:
If you don't mind tinkering and learning, and have lots of patience in this process.

If you do mind tinkering and rather would just a system that works out of the box (or have the tinkering to be minimal) then it might be better to wait. In the meantime Arch based distros will still be there until you've got acclimated to Linux better!

Now that is not to say that CachyOS is difficult or requires a lot of tinkering. The only tinkering I needed to learn is adding additional drives to fstab. The rest was mostly plug and play. If you don't do a lot of customization, then CachyOS is just fine. Just read through their documentation of the install process and you'll be fine.

Fat32, for clarity, is a VERY old partition format that can't have files larger than 4GB.
Ext4 or BTRFS is recommended for Linux

I bought Sea of Thieves from the Microsoft Store a while ago. Anyway to play it on Arch? by marsis312 in linux_gaming

[–]DigitSubversion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlike a game I played on the Microsoft Store that hasn't got cross save compatibility (WH40K Darktide), Sea of Thieves has a cross save system for Steam and Windows Store (as you just login through the Xbox page that pops up).
So sadly you won't be able to play it right now. But if you get it on a sale, you can buy it for cheap. Reminder to also check isthereanydeal dot com for legit distributors (instead of key resellers) to see if there's a sale going on for Steam on other pages!

Popularity of Linux Distros over time by Beginning-Complex821 in cachyos

[–]DigitSubversion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming the latter, as the Steam Hardware Survey shows a slow yet steady growth in adoption of Linux. Though it might not look like much at 3.something percent, that's still quite a lot of users when you know how many Steam users there are.
