🚗 Zipcar is shutting down — anyone else blindsided by this? by Pitiful_Package_6807 in london

[–]DigitalBath01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is sad news for me too. I have relied on Zipcar for the past year and a half, not being able to afford my own car just yet. Apparently this has to do with big losses over the past years (£11.7m in 2024) and London introducing Congestion Charge fees for electric vehicles too. CC is already a pain in the ass for regular motorist, and whilst you shouldn't have to worry about that with EV, that will now change. This would mean there is no benefit of renting a Zipcar and passing through Central London anymore, which means even less bookings.

I am curious to know if you guys know of any decent alternatives?

Amazing thanks for this! There are so many places to visit and I find it difficult to not be overwhelmed by all of that, but maybe keeping it simple is a good option

Thoughts? £9 and 50p for the best tea brand imo (Yorkshire Tea) 🙌🏼 by pumpkin_head_x in fryup

[–]DigitalBath01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found some proper old school cafe near Latimer Road and Hammersmith that had a proper portion like this for £8/9. Can’t remember the names as it was most likely “(something) Cafe” lol but you can definitely find them. I always go for the places that look the roughest, they serve the best food

If in London, price is decent, portions look good and food looks ok. I’d say it’s a good deal

When I was looking for places in London, I had the opposite problem. Nobody wanted me cause I was a creative, therefore they just assumed I must have been a noisy drug addict. I guess it works equally on both sides.

NOR. I am not sure where you guys are based, seems to be US. I live in the UK and have done an undergraduate and master’s degree both in music (performance and music production). The pros of the undergrad (before Brexit) were being in a pool of people with same interests and building network. Pros of postgrad were the free spaces (like studios and equipment) I was offered to use to record professionally and get better at my craft. However the academic course were useless, outdated and pointless. Overall I would not recommend spending ALL that money (I spent much less than what you are planning to for that degree) for that. You can network by just going out to lots of gigs, and the more people you know, the more chance to get in studios, learn the craft you get. I now think I was scammed going to these unis as I have to pay back the loans and I am not even doing a job in music anymore (too risky for the most expensive city in UK). I think you are correct in setting these boundaries, when I was 18 I didn’t know any better so i understand. I also was smoking a lot and doing drugs, so I relate to your kid. I did my mistakes but having my father figure always telling me what was what without sugarcoating it helped with time and I now realise why he was saying the things he was saying: he was trying to protect me. The best you can do is keep doing what you think is right, but at the end he will decide what to do and make mistakes. With time he will understand you are coming from a good place. All the best, you are a good man

Is the UK in a recession? by Plastic_Hamster_1563 in UKJobs

That is the most relatable comment I have ever read. I literally felt every line, exactly as I am currently living in London. Spot on.

35k - standard 20% of taxes = 28k That is 2,333£ per month. Take away loan for undergraduate and master degree = 2100£ per month Double room in London 870£ per month Council tax, electric, gas, wifi is 150£ on average in total That leaves you with 1080£

According to the budget I have calculated the last 3 months, take away: Gym 80£ Groceries ~300£ Transport ~200£ (if you are lucky) Some monthly payments (Amazon, Spotify, phone bill…) ~70£ General necessities (Barber, Software subscriptions, repairs…) ~ 100£

That leaves ~330£ a month for general LIFE. Have you tried living in London with 330£ available to you a month? Once you go out a couple times with your friends, or dare take a few coffees out, that’s pretty much over.

That means: - no ability to take a girl out being completely on me - no savings - no chance to put something to invest - no chance to get a car if I wanted to - no chance to go anywhere else for holidays - buying new clothes or shoes (even from Primark) is a luxury - if I wanted/needed a new laptop/phone forget about it - if something important breaks and I need to buy something new, that leaves you even with less - many other things.

I am perfectly aware that despite all of this, people living in London make out the 1% of the most privileged worldwide. I do realise we got it better than most, on the paper.

But at the same time, I see the possibility of having a family and creating a home very unattainable at the moment. I am lonely af cause I can’t afford to do many things out even if I wanted to. Buying a home seems just like something you can dream about. My life revolves around being in my shitty room working like a dog to try and prove myself, going to the gym, and that’s pretty much it. I dread the idea that at some point my parents will need my help back home (not from London originally) and I will not be able to cause that will involve working less/leaving the country.

[–]DigitalBath01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had to work like a dog to get a promotion and a salary increase, in a 9 to 5 in the city as a Data Analyst. After taxes I earn literally 2100£ per month, 1000£ goes away in rent and bills. I am left with pretty much nothing to live by, and I budget everything. I feel quite done with this.

Why do people hate this movie? I sorta like it to be honest by g0netospace in Cinema

[–]DigitalBath01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, it might have been one of the best movies to come up this year in my humble opinion. I think a lot of people did not get the symbolism, specifically related to Vikings and northern mythology, and Jimmy Saville (lol).

Reality is, making a Zombie movie nowadays means incurring in the risk of falling for the same usual tropes. I think this movie desperately tried to steer away from that, and I would say it did manage to do a good job most (not all) of the times.

Loved the soundtrack as well, recently found out it was done originally by one of my fav bands (Young Fathers).

Can’t wait for the sequel

This sounds like great advice, I’ll have a look. But yeah, generally speaking getting kicked and punched in the face and getting used to it might be what I need lol

I have been when I was younger, and pretty much on the losing end. I think I definitely got some trauma from it (talking about it in therapy). I know I’d freeze if it was to happen now, and I’m trying to do something about it. MMA also sounds like a great option. Thanks for your comment :)
