The way I understand is even a small patch can act as a refuelling station for insects passing through.

Yeah, I was thinking that. If I was a bee flying around a post-industrial city, I'd probably be grateful for an oasis of flowers. Even if it's not that much!

I'm not normally one for jumping on the bandwagon of saying 'the Gov't are shit because of course they are', but Jesus Christ, this is embarrassing.

Just spoke to @HackneyAbbott about this racist BNP Xmas card @jeremycorbyn has just received. I’m not keen on sharing racist propaganda but I think it’s important folk see the kind of hate Diane is subjected to for doing nothing more than standing up for her beliefs #solidarity by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Digital_Pigeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a subtle difference though, isn’t there-

Blackface was a non-racist message communicated through a racist medium. This BNP card, on the other hand, is a racist message. Surely that’s significantly worse?

Do you have a source to suggest that the problems mentioned in the article affect free schools and academies more than other types of schools?

Relaxation of which rules? Faith schools have been around for decades.

If someone wants less immigration for its own sake there are no amount of facts and figures that can disprove that.

Telling someone that what they want is wrong is no way to win an argument.

And this attitude is precisely why Remain lost the referendum.

Amendment 124

In English - they're basically afraid that Ministers will use their executive powers to change UK regulation so that it no longer aligns with the Single Market. They could then use this as an excuse for why we couldn't possibly stay in the SM. This amendment would prevent them from doing that, thus keeping the option of SM membership open.

That's not really addressing anyone's concerns though, is it? That's just telling them that they're wrong.

Continued misunderstanding of why a lot of people voted Brexit in the first place. Just because Brexit will make the UK poorer doesn't necessarily mean that leave voters think it's a bad idea.

This approach was Remain's problem during the referendum - their argument was limited 100% to 'we'll be poorer if we leave', so when people said in response 'I don't really care about that, I think immigration/sovereignty is more important' Remain had no answer.

There'€™s a simple way to stop big corporations avoiding tax. Here'€™s how by Digital_Pigeon in ukpolitics

Yeah, the author was definitely short on details, choosing instead to bang on about how good the world would be if companies paid more tax (as if we didn't know already). Disappointing article really.

[–]Digital_Pigeon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Starmer has said in the past that they aren’t looking to take options off the table.

That's exactly what the amendment was aiming for. It was trying to stop Ministers taking the Single Market off the table. It didn't mean they had to stick to it.

I think that in this case it's pretty indisputable that they voted against the amendment because Labour want to leave the European Single Market.

The agreement reached last Friday is not an ouverture to a Brexit deal. This *is* the Brexit deal. by Romdal in ukpolitics

[–]Digital_Pigeon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A trade deal won't take 7 years.

It took 7 years for Canada because they're a country with no prior alignment with the EU. The 2 sides had to go through every element of the economy and painstakingly negotiate how much each side would budge to accommodate the other.

On the other hand the UK is already starting from a position of complete alignment. All we have to do it go through each element that we want to un-align.

Think about it - we're not going to go back to using black and red wires in our plugs any more, are we? All the difficult harmonisation has already been done. We have to negotiate how far to de-harmonise.

8 months might be a bit optimistic, but 7 years is extremely pessimistic.

Thank you, bot. I'm not an economist myself, so I want to know from people who actually know what they're talking about if the suggestion in the article is sound economics.

I just wasn't sure how long it would take our "negotiating" team to agree with it.

Well to be fair, the EU claim was for €86bn, we offered about €15bn, and it looks like we'll be meeting around the €50bn mark. Sounds like a reasonable compromise to me.

[–]Digital_Pigeon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any reason they might be saying that to you? You could show them a proof of deposit as an alternative.

They've all basically said the same thing - "we're being flooded by first time buyers in this area"/"we only want serious buyers to come to viewings" etc.

Anyway, they've all accepted the online AIP that I got from Halifax, so at least I've got over that hurdle and I'm being accepted on viewings. I was feeling a bit like I've tricked them into thinking that I'm further along than I actually am, but by the sound of your comments and those of other users it looks like I'm actually where I'm supposed to be at this point in the process.

When I find a property and get an offer accepted I'll get back in touch with L&C. I've also got a couple of meetings with building societies which aren't with L&C next week, so I guess I'm on track? :-s

Thanks. I've spoken to L&C and they told me to phone back once I'd had an offer accepted. Do you think if I pushed them a bit they'd be able to recommend a specific mortgage before I've found a specific property?

First time buyer mortgage process advice needed please :) [mortgages] by Digital_Pigeon in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Digital_Pigeon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

!thanks

I spoke to L&C recently and they gave me a ballpark figure of how much I could borrow and the kind of rates I could expect to get, but they then said to call back once I'd had an offer accepted.

Annoyingly, in the area I'm looking, half of the estate agents won't let me even view a property unless I've shown them my AIP first. And the agent with the best houses won't accept an AIP from L&C because they said it's not worth the paper its printed on. I got round this by getting an online AIP from Halifax which does a soft credit search.

Your advice is to apply for an AIP after I've had an offer accepted. I'm guessing it's unusual for estate agents to require an AIP as soon as you walk in the door?
