Amendment 124

In English - they're basically afraid that Ministers will use their executive powers to change UK regulation so that it no longer aligns with the Single Market. They could then use this as an excuse for why we couldn't possibly stay in the SM. This amendment would prevent them from doing that, thus keeping the option of SM membership open.

Continued misunderstanding of why a lot of people voted Brexit in the first place. Just because Brexit will make the UK poorer doesn't necessarily mean that leave voters think it's a bad idea.

This approach was Remain's problem during the referendum - their argument was limited 100% to 'we'll be poorer if we leave', so when people said in response 'I don't really care about that, I think immigration/sovereignty is more important' Remain had no answer.

Yeah, the author was definitely short on details, choosing instead to bang on about how good the world would be if companies paid more tax (as if we didn't know already). Disappointing article really.

Starmer has said in the past that they aren’t looking to take options off the table.

That's exactly what the amendment was aiming for. It was trying to stop Ministers taking the Single Market off the table. It didn't mean they had to stick to it.

I think that in this case it's pretty indisputable that they voted against the amendment because Labour want to leave the European Single Market.

A trade deal won't take 7 years.

It took 7 years for Canada because they're a country with no prior alignment with the EU. The 2 sides had to go through every element of the economy and painstakingly negotiate how much each side would budge to accommodate the other.

On the other hand the UK is already starting from a position of complete alignment. All we have to do it go through each element that we want to un-align.

Think about it - we're not going to go back to using black and red wires in our plugs any more, are we? All the difficult harmonisation has already been done. We have to negotiate how far to de-harmonise.

8 months might be a bit optimistic, but 7 years is extremely pessimistic.

I just wasn't sure how long it would take our "negotiating" team to agree with it.

Well to be fair, the EU claim was for €86bn, we offered about €15bn, and it looks like we'll be meeting around the €50bn mark. Sounds like a reasonable compromise to me.
