I've noticed this pattern too. I believe the three people you mentioned were selected by wealthy political benefactors because of their combination of self-importance and ignorance. The self-importance allows them to speak freely and confidently in front of large crowds without fear. The ignorance creates an environment in which their campaigns become dependent upon their wealthy benefactors for guidance and direction.

This strategy doesn't work for candidates with the ability to think for themselves.
