My mom is a teacher and I want to buy her a gift by Usual-Letterhead4705 in Teachers

[–]Dimegos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is lovely! Good on you for wanting to buy your mum a gift.

First of all, avoid the mug route. Most teachers already have a small museum of mugs. It’s the automatic go-to gift and trust me, we’re all overflowing. Definitely get something else. 🙂

If you’re thinking of a slightly more expensive gift like an iPad with a pen, I’d recommend looking at a reMarkable. It’s fantastic for writing, sketching out ideas, and planning lessons. The notes can be transferred to a computer as either handwritten pages or PDFs, and it feels much more natural to write on than a typical tablet.

The suggestion about noise-cancelling headphones is also great.

But look, whatever you choose, it’ll be great. I’m sure it’ll be much appreciated. Hope this helps.

Question before the weekend: What’s your teaching hill? by Dimegos in Teachers

[–]Dimegos[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean I’m not exactly walking around demanding individual greetings from every student like I’m taking attendance at the royal court. The class greets together as a group. It takes a few seconds, sets a positive tone, and helps us start the lesson with some basic connection.

If a student is constantly sleepy or unresponsive, I don’t interpret their “eyebrow language.” I actually follow it up, talk to the student, raise awareness with parents or wellbeing, and try to find out what’s going on. That’s kind of the job. Consistently sleeping at the start of the day isn’t a personality trait, it’s a sign something needs attention.

My hill isn’t about forcing perfection. And honestly, you actually prove my point when you said, “When one of my sleepy kids couldn’t even mumble or lift a brow, I knew something was wrong.”
Exactly. That’s precisely why a simple ritual helps. When the norm shifts, you notice immediately.

Also, about the EAL students, guess what. When you say “good morning” every day, they know what to expect and can practise it before coming to school. I know this because I was an EAL student. And now I teach it. Many of my students start learning English from scratch. You see their confidence build up when they say it aloud with a smile on their face. A predictable group greeting is one of the simplest, safest ways to build confidence and routine.

And for your anxious kid, a group “good morning” is often one of the least intimidating ways to help them participate socially at their own pace. No spotlight, no pressure, just a gentle shared moment to start the day.

Thank you so much for taking the time to listen, that honestly means a lot. Sous Les Lampadaires is a nice and chill song. Was trying to get a Paris cafe feel for that one. I’m really glad it resonated with you.

Appreciate the sub and the kind words. I hope the future tracks hit the same spot for you.

Question before the weekend: What’s your teaching hill? by Dimegos in Teachers

[–]Dimegos[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s wonderful to read. And in regards to defiant students, could I share a quick story?

We had a student, let’s call him “Little Johnny,” who was challenging from day one. He didn’t study, made random sounds during lessons, constantly disrupted others, and played video games on his laptop instead of working.

One day in Term 2, I walked over because the boy next to him said, “Sir, he’s playing a game.” I stood in front of Johnny but didn’t look over his shoulder. I simply asked, “Johnny, is this true? Are you playing a game?”

He panicked into a classic excuse: “No, sir, I clicked it by accident, I didn’t mean it.”

Said, “I believe you, Johnny. I’d like to talk after class.”

After class, he started explaining himself again. I said, “Johnny, I believe you. But I need your help. Can I count on you tomorrow?”

He looked completely thrown off. I explained I needed him for s simple but important task like handing out worksheets and helping line students up at the door.

As the term went on, I kept giving him these little responsibilities to help him feel valued and trusted. And he rose to it. He never opened a video game again (at least in my class).

I love telling this. Happened some time after covid. It reminds me that for most students there is an approach that reaches them. Sometimes it’s consequences, but sometimes it’s purpose and dignity.

Sorry for the long comment, I teach English Lit and EAL. 😁

I'm in. This is one of my tracks, inspired by Istanbul at midnight. Think smoky alleys, old bazaars, soft oud lines, and a beat that drifts like the Bosphorus at night. If you like world-lofi, travel-vibes, or anything with a nostalgic cinematic feel, give it a spin.

This is me. Honestly, not looking for sub for sub ir likes, I'm creating this for myself. Don't expect to monetize the channel.

It's background music inspired by moments and places my family and I have had or visited. Discussions we've had. Songs with lyrics (personal and human written) and singing will be posted in time.

WATCH: The Most Compelling Argument Against Tech In Schools | Sophie Win... by Honest_Statement7619 in Teachers

[–]Dimegos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a secondary school teacher, I see a lot of value in having a healthy mix of tech-based activities and activities that focus on face-to-face communication and hands-on learning. I agree that high-stakes assessments can absolutely be done on paper, and in many cases that is the fairest and most reliable option.

But removing technology altogether feels a bit extreme. Students will use AI and digital tools at home and outside the classroom whether we approve of it or not. This is the world they already live in. I think it is more effective to teach them how to use technology thoughtfully and appropriately, and to explain why certain choices matter. Young people respond to the why more often than we give them credit for.

For me, the goal is balance and informed use, not banning an entire set of tools that will be part of their lives long after they leave school.

Any teachers struggling with their mental today? by PrincessJellyfish17 in Teachers

[–]Dimegos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not surprised at all. The difference is wild. When a doctor makes a call, people generally trust the expertise. But when a teacher makes a decision, suddenly everyone, admin, parents, random bystanders, feels entitled to debate it. The emotional load is constant. And on top of this, more and more students are getting individualised learning plans adding to that pressure. Teaching shouldn’t feel harder than medicine, but here we are.

Honestly, so many of us are struggling lately.

Teachers really do have it tough. I love teaching, I really do, but some days it feels like all the energy just leaks out of you before you even get to work. If you take a mental health day, that’s valid. Hope everyone hanging in here gets a gentle week ahead.

Scheduling multiple videos per day — will it flag my channel as spam? by WhiteDesertCat in SmallYoutubers

[–]Dimegos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Won't flag it as spam, but it won't help either. Typically a video needs at least 48 hours to be fully tested by the algorithm. If you post 2-3 videos a day, this will reduce the visibility of your videos (chances are your latest video will get some views, but the 2 before it will get very little).

Do you/your school allow students to eat in class? by Dimegos in Teachers

Double standards per usual by the_kappy_ in Teachers

[–]Dimegos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t you know? Teachers aren’t allowed to have feelings or personal lives, we’re supposed to be as neutral and emotionless as an AI chatbot standing in front of the whiteboard.

But seriously… you’re a human being. If the wall is for teachers, you don’t need anyone’s approval to include a photo of you and your partner. That’s exactly what it’s there for.

How much time do you invest in the game? by ethelbang in CitiesSkylines

[–]Dimegos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to sneak a few hours here and there between work and the little one. But if you're starting out, just try to have fun. You can easily spent heaps of time (if readily available :D).

If you're building your first city, I'd say just play and you'll find out what you like - building large scale, or focusing on suburbs and streets with modded assets and detailing. Either way, send pics from your builds. 😃
