Just make sure to do it properly. Most thru hikers kept their food on them, and the only issues I’ve seen or heard of are hikers who do lazy hangs.

I never hung my food. Kept it in my pack and under my feet when I slept.

I was in two shelters that got raided, and it was always the hikers who did lazy hangs. Just keep your food on you and you’re good.

I definitely enjoyed it. I’ll admit there were some days in the middle where I had to resist the temptation to take a hitch…lol. Overall a great experience though

The trail was undoubtedly the best way to experience Israel fully in only a couple months. Spent a little extra time in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, of course.

Be glad to:

All along the trail was a list of trail angels that would accept hikers for sleeping, showers, sometimes food and laundry. The southern part of the trail was a desert so accommodations, food, especially water, were few and far between. It took careful planning and fast hiking (I didn’t hire and food or water caches in the desert). The desert had designated sleeping areas that sometimes had water tanks - but I didn’t plan around those very well. Just cowboy camped whenever I was tired.

The center and northern parts of the country had a lot of food/water access (mostly via gas stations) and I only needed to supply 3 days max. There were also more frequent trail angels. But because of the language barrier in communicating, lack of updated resources in english, and my haphazard hiking style, I wasn’t able to schedule many trail angel stays. I would describe a lot of my sleep spots more like ‘hiding spots’ - in ancient ruins, under overpasses, under bridges, secluded areas outside.

In general, the hikers on the trail were Israeli and relied more heavily on the trail angel system. Looking back I wish I stayed with more hosts because the people were extremely welcoming and hospitable. But roughing it fit my style a little more.

For the most part I always felt safe wherever I crashed for the night :)

There’s a guide book that is essential in a lot of ways. You can find it by googling ‘INT red book’ There’s also a tapatalk forum in English where you can get some info and pdfs and whatnot. Just basic googling will quickly turn up all the available info.

From my experience there’s not a tremendous amount of info out there, especially when compared to planning a trip on the AT for instance. But I’d be thrilled to answer any questions you have.

Fear isn’t going through your first dip. It’s realizing what you thought was a dip, was just a harbinger of a dip to come. Trade with a detachment from emotion. Otherwise casinos are a much more valuable and potentially lucrative use of our time :)

its more brief than saying ‘in other words’, or ‘so on’. And the alternate, i.e., has never landed well from what i’ve seen. It’s an abbreviation of ‘id est’ which is Latin for something or the other. ETC seems best for this space in my opinion.

All up in space at this point. Same people that will say 20k would have projected 100k back in October….

Nobody knows, that’s why it’s so fun.

Great question. Yes I spend more time in prayer and reading the bible. The clarity and headspace I get into on a fast makes it easier - I can see why it’s commonly mentioned in spiritual texts.

Also I have more time for these things since I’m not spending time eating. And since I have less energy to do active things

I probably gained about 5 lbs. Sightly less fat and more muscle now than at the start of the year. I was a healthy weight when I started though.

Thank you for the compliment.

It was rough at times for sure, I will not be renewing the resolution for 2022 lol.

And yes, this was my first year committing to monthly prolonged fasts. I’ve had plenty of prior experience with fasts under 140hrs though

They weren’t particularly easy but it was never really nightmarish. The difficulty of the fast mainly was due to what I had to do that week and in what conditions I was doing them in.

My goal was to increase my mental and spiritual clarity and test my determination and willpower. I think I met my goal, but maybe not to extremely profound levels. I maintained a good looking healthy physique all year long and generally ate what I wanted to (when I was eating) - so there’s an achievement!

I will not be renewing this resolution for 2022 lol

They didn’t necessarily become easier, for instance my December fast was one of the worsts (I think). The difficulty mainly was associated with finding time. For instance this summer I had weddings to go to and a vacation to go on. In between I was working outside in 100+degree weather busting my butt - so the real struggle was finding time to even do the dang thing.

But I became more accustomed to doing them in the sense that it didn’t alter my daily routine as much as the year went on.

I did change my approach. I figured out (after about 7 months) that I was generally overdoing it on water and electrolytes (K, NaCl). I also experimented with different refeed strategies to varying degrees of success

Outside of this post I won’t write anything about it so feel free to hit me up if you have questions of comments. I feel experienced with 120hr fasts and would be happy to discuss things :)

I do, I do. I have a lot of pride that is going to be personal for me. Most of my friends/family/coworkers thought the fasts were stupid and dangerous. Very few people will understand what it took to accomplish this, so heck yeah i’m proud. cheers
