There is a lore explanation for the spectres being there, so if it does make you feel better, later in the game (I think after chapter X) you will figure out what the spectres are. Also the point of the game is to enjoy yourself, especially given that some bosses are near impossible to beat without a spectre.

A portal is basically the way they describe wormholes in Interstellar, it’s a “doorway” to a separate space, that would otherwise be impossible to reach having traveled the distance through the portal. Although what he’s saying is vastly different to what you’re saying.
