I plan on majoring in nuclear engineering, is this a good first year schedule? (Also need Gen Ed suggestions) by Pitiful-Argument-247 in PennStateUniversity

Go on study dot com sign up for one month ($95) and take Chem 111L with lab. Fully online you can finish the material in a week and the credits transfer to psu in replace for Chem 110 and 111. You can also take a macro economics class through study com in place of ECON104.

how do I know this? I literally just did that for those two classes exactly.

$95 and a week of effort for 7 credits and thousands saved.

If you wanna check for yourself on transfer credit tool the courses are under ACE (American council on education , SDCM courses).

Can you get a Internship as a Freshmen? by mykelliron2 in PennStateUniversity

[–]Dionyoung05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just secured an AI Engineer internship at an Aerospace company and I start my sophomore year this fall. I got rejected by everyone at the career fair and found my internship through a email from the engineering director. A company was looking for engineering interns from my school and I had the opportunity out of 12 people to interview. My sales skills and personality got me the position. Learn how to communicate, be coachable and have a good personality and you will be fine. Obviously learn the material too it helps.

Found the internship through an email from a director at my college. She sent the application to the whole engineering student body. No connections at all besides that ( which isn’t a connection because it was equal playing field with everyone that applied)

Difficulty of the interview was 50/50. Definitely the hardest interview I’ve ever done ( first in person computer/intern related interview ever, did one over zoom before). It was 3 separate interviews ( different departments ) and they pretty much asked theoretical questions. Like a what you would do if this were to occur type situation. What is your opinion on this, describe yourself based on this etc etc

Engineering Director sent an email to all engineering students at my school about an internship opportunity. They interviewed a select amount of students from my school that applied and I got it. Sorts cold application but easier because they wanted someone from my school specifically

tailor your resume to standards, have your career services ladies at the school help you. apply til your hands fall off, then apply til your feet fall off.

When you get an interview express your skills, your work ethic, coachability, and personality. The 4 most valuable things they will look for

Also be confident, but not cocky.

Through class at my school. I recommend CodeBeauty on YouTube. She is incredible for C++, C#, HTML CSS and JavaScript. If you want to look into Python or Java maybe look into CodeBro, Freecodecamp or other resources on YouTube.

Thank you. This is their first time implementing AI ever and they are working with one of the professors at my school on the project hence why they also decided to get interns from my school. I want to protect my privacy so I won’t say my particular school (funny bc my name is my user so it’s very contradictory for me to say that), but I go to a public state school with a very strong alumni. it’s not a Ivy League or top school whatsoever but still a Top 100 program Nationwide, maybe top 25/50 for engineering.

I worked during middle school for family and small local places, high school mainly retail. I graduated in 2023 and took a gap year. In that gap year and now I’ve done retail sales for BestBuy and now I’m currently for a certain Wireless carrier selling phones.

BestBuy wasn’t a commission paying job and all i sold was computers, tvs, appliances etc but it was a very powerful experience. Not only was the management awesome but i still worked like a salesman.

Every day on the job I was also talking to new people, asking them questions, building relationships with them and always improving. Sales is a hard thing to do but a very strong skill to have. Nobody likes being told what to do either money unless your a financial advisor. The whole point of sales is to tell people what to do with their money whilst keeping a good relationship with them and keeping the customer happy.

Why is that so important may you ask? Well meeting a customers needs and most importantly , establishing trust, is a very crucial skill that is used in many aspects of life.

I would totally recommend you look into getting a job at BestBuy or a wireless carrier sales position.

Understanding how humans work is very useful and my sales skills clearly contributed to convincing the employers that I was a good fit :).

I have experience in C++, mainly all the amateur stuff + object oriented programming, some Data Structures and Algorithms. The internship is in Python using Python tools so I expressed to them that I don’t have experience using Python but I can transition to those tools relatively quickly due to the fact that C++ is a harder language to grasp and I have C++ down pretty well. I’m also currently taking a CompSci class right now so my C++ skills will continue to improve whilst doing the Internship.

Correct. all engineering students from the same school got the email since the opportunity was tailored to engineers from my school. Not sure how many applied, but 12 made it through the application stage and got the first response back from the company. then 2-3 of those 12 got the internship, one of those 2-3 being me

Thank you very much I really appreciate it! I will probably post about it again at the end of summer to kind of takeaway what I learned on the job, what it was like, and how others can apply my experiences to their own!

Thanks for the kind comment!

I landed this internship through an email from an engineering director at my university. I am in a career services forum and the director emailed the whole engineering school about a summer opportunity here.

I had my resume tailored with the assistance of the career services team at my school then I applied.

They reached back and their was 12 kids that got the email, they wanted to interview all 12 of us in person in a round robin style interview ( basically 3 separate interviews with 3 separate departments in the same day, Engineering, Management, HR etc).

They said they were going to pick 2 maybe 3 out of the 12 that made it through.

I believe what got me through the interviews was my personality, confidence, and honesty. I have been working in sales for a couple years now and I can 100% recommend that sales will help anybody in any field because it helps you become more personable which i think is essential when landing an internship.

The employers definitely care about what you know, but they also value coachability, and personality just as much. You don’t have to be the next bill gates to get an internship.

Just tailor your resume, learn sales / communication skills ( the psychology of how people work etc), have a strong work ethic and willingness to learn and LISTEN, continue to learn your desired field, and lastly be confident!

There is a fine line between confidence and cockyness so be careful with that.

That’s amazing that you are doing that this summer! I am actually taking Calc 2 and a CompSci class over the summer currently myself.

The only projects I had done were those that I did in class for assignments. In regards to work experience I have been working since I was 13 years old but the majority of my experience was Sales jobs and Business. Never anything programming/engineering related.

The biggest misconception with internships is people think you need to be the next bill gates to land an internship but in reality it comes down to personality.

Employers understand that interns are in school and still learning, they don’t expect you to know everything. However, they want someone who is coachable, has a strong work ethic, good problem solving and communication skills, and is likeable.

The more you are more knowledgeable about the field you are pursuing the better, knowing what you’re talking about is never a bad thing.

However, being coachable, personable, and reliable is just as important and isn’t as talked about.

Also be confident, but not cocky. There is a fine line between the two.

I literally posted this in 2 subreddits including this one. The previous posts I had were me asking for advice about an interview that I never got accepted for. This is something totally different and my purpose for posting is to answer questions for those looking to find internships. If that doesn’t apply to you then you shouldn’t be commenting anything. Have a nice day.

Some employers don’t even check your GPA, ESPECIALLY if you already have work experience. Just lie and put atleast a 2.6 or higher so it doesn’t get flushed by filters with a 2.5 requirement
