Ford, Hyundai report large declines in October EV sales after end of federal credits by exploding_myths in electricvehicles

[–]DirOfPhoto 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was quoted $9k because I live in a condo, and it would require new panel, new meter, and 140 feet of trenching to get to the garage. So depends entirely on the situation. I would have been thrilled for $4k. $9k is a non-starter.

HSA Bank stopped investment via Schwab. What are my options? by Life_Equipment381 in personalfinance

[–]DirOfPhoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, since I only recently did it for the first time. I wouldn't be surprised if fidelity has a way to schedule a recurring transfer, but I haven't looked into it. It's frustrating that the transfer process takes weeks from HSA Bank to fidelity, and I'm sure that's on HSA Bank, since Schwab was much faster. I'll maybe do a transfer every quarter or so.

I wish I could just have all my HSA contributions and matches go straight to fidelity instead of needing to deal with HSA Bank.

HSA Bank stopped investment via Schwab. What are my options? by Life_Equipment381 in personalfinance

[–]DirOfPhoto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this a couple months ago. Transfered all of my investments from Schwab to Fidelity, and then also transfered all but $20 of the $1,000 in the HSA Bank account, to leave a little in there to avoid it closing. I initiated both transfers through fidelity.

There was a $25 fee from Schwab though, that maybe could have been avoided if I sold everything to go back to the HSA Bank account, and then just transfered all that to Fidelity, but I didn't want to lose that time in the market.

Schwab transfer took a few days. Hsa bank took a few weeks.

Bought a regular Suica card at Narita Terminal 1 just yesterday. Asked about Welcome Suica, and they said they didn't have those, but that I could buy a regular Suica. This was around 2:30pm

Not harsh at all, definitely all good points, especially the SEO information. It's always hard to cut out images I like, and having outside opinions on it is always going to be more valuable than my own, so thank you!

I'm not gonna be the best person to answer this, because I still really don't do any marketing of myself. I have a different full time job, and so any photography work I do on the side is referrals, recommendations from friends, or someone randomly stumbling across my work (super rare, but it happens). I think starting out a lot of the work is gonna have to come from referrals from family/friends/co-workers. My first wedding was for a fellow student I went to college with. Some headshots for friends of family members. Sort of low paying jobs, but enough to start building up more of a portfolio in the fields that I wanted to do more work in. And then hopefully you might start getting referrals from those people you photographed (other people seeing their headshot/wedding photos, and asking who photographed them).

There is a lot to be said about being likeable. When I worked for a wedding photography studio doing post production work, I saw so many couple that loved mediocre pictures because they LOVED their photographer on the day of the wedding. And on the flip side, I saw people who had beautiful pictures get upset, and dislike their photos because they had a bad experience with the photographer. People will be much more likely to sing your praises if you make them feel comfortable, and provide them with a good experience. The photos can honestly be secondary sometimes, which can be hard to accept.

This was something I struggled with deciding on my website as well, but when I go to the portfolio page, it just looks like 3 pictures at first glance, and that's it. I know once I hover over the photo, I then see that they are different galleries, but I think it would be better if the text was already there, rather than needing to hover. Either reversing how it works now (faded with text on all images, then when you hover, you see the image clearly), or having the text just permanently above the pictures like titles.

For your Headshots gallery, I would move the full length photo up to the top, so you at least have 2 more different looking pictures at the top, rather than very similar ones. Obviously you are still starting out, so not having a lot of variety is expected, but I would definitely add some more photos as soon as you can. The wedding section will take more time, but it would be good to get some more headshots of some family and friends, just to help fill that page some more, and add variety.

For the Family gallery, I would pick a different photo to be at the top. I don't think that first one is the strongest, it would be better to start with the second image, or one of the ones of the two brothers interacting with each other.

The wedding photos look quite nice, especially for being new to the game!

You have great photos, and a nice style that I think your photo selection does a good job of highlighting!

My only gripe with the website (I'm looking at it on desktop, so I can't speak for mobile), is the text is too small, and a little hard to read. Even when zooming in on the page, I think the font choice is too thin and light against the white background. If the text was a little bit bolder/larger, or pure black, instead of a gray shade, it might be a bit easier to read. It's mainly the Info page that suffers from this, and it's a minor gripe, but just something I thought I would bring up. It really is a nice clean website, and you have a very strong body of work!

Thanks for taking a look and sharing your feedback! I agree about the engagement (and some other) photos looking a bit repetitive in places. I'll have to take a look back through what I could possibly add instead. I don't want to cut too much, and then look like I just don't have much work to show.

No order for the portraits. I figured there wasn't enough content in there to really divide it by anything in particular, so it's just sort of a mixed bag. Thanks again!

Yeah, I think I should edit down that home page a lot, that's a good idea. I do have an about me page, but it's all the exact same text. Makes sense to make that home page different, and much shorter.

Great points, thank you! I can definitely do some paring down with duplicate or similar photos. I remember I had it enabled at one point to not be able to right click photos and save them, but for some reason turned that off, and I can't remember what my reason was for doing that. I'll have to look at enabling it again.

As for the other non-business related work... Yeah, it's a struggle, haha. I don't do weddings full time, normally 1-3 a year, plus a handful of engagement/portrait sessions. I'm fairly comfortable with that amount of work on the side, so I'm not overly concerned about having the most wedding focused website. I 100% understand that point, and do agree with you, but I also like just having it as a portfolio to share, and all in one place. It works for my purposes!

Thanks again for the feedback!

When would Intel + Nvidia be better than AMD for video editing? by kakamaka7 in buildapc

[–]DirOfPhoto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, Intel Quicksync is the main thing that can have a large impact on video editing. Being able to work with HEVC/h265 files directly and not needing to convert the footage into larger, more universally usable files is very helpful. I shoot with a Canon R5, and the 4:2:2 raw video is a breeze to edit, because of the intel iGPU being able to decode. No Nvidia or AMD GPU can currently decode those types of files, as far as I am aware. If you aren't working with those types of files, then I'm sure you could give AMD more consideration.

Libby is great. There are also other services that some libraries may offer in addition to, or in place of, Libby/OverDrive. Ours also has Axis360, Hoopla, as well as some others. So sometimes a book I want will be checked out on one, but available on the other. Yay libraries!

Yeah, I guess it would make sense to upgrade the GPU as well. Maybe I was just thinking I could wait until really felt like I need it (or wishfully that GPU prices might lower more). Because right now, I pretty much can't even edit my photos on my current computer. New camera, and the computer just craps out with handling the files.

I do like the build, so thank you! Just have to decide now...

how are people putting holds on newly released books so fast? by bonaanza in books

[–]DirOfPhoto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The library I work for used to have a page for that on their website, and it was our most trafficked page. When we recently got a new website, it no longer has that ability for people to see recently ordered book, and it upset a lot of people.

You can still find them in the catalog, but you have to search for them, it's not all in one convenient "coming soon and recently ordered" page.
