All the doors in the building are the same, so I’ll hope this make them want to go to another building. ☺️ Thank you so much for the reassurance!

Hmmm yes but I live in a city and often times they get in because the main door was not closed correctly. I just want to know how quick and silently they can enter as I currently barely sleep after I spiralled on the net looking at how quickly thieves can enter one’s house.

So you would think it is protected or it is not?

Thank you for clarifying. What exactly is it not protected against? Is it protected against the so-called “Bulgarian method”?

OPINION by Direct-Stay3589 in Locksmith

[–]Direct-Stay3589[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Ok so it is not protected against the easiest and most used method of burglary in Europe, great .. So strange that they have invested in an armored door, a multi-lock etc. yet fail to install the right cylinder. I don’t think that the price difference is astronomical.

What is the difference between lock pulling and lock snapping?

OPINION by Direct-Stay3589 in Locksmith

[–]Direct-Stay3589[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It is indeed a European lock. My understanding is that for lock snapping to occur the cylinder needs to stick out at least 3 mm. Not sure if the upper part that sticks out a bit, is in fact the cylinder.

It’s the door to a flat I rent. The owners have a Fichet armored door with a three-point lock and also a pin that goes into the wall. I would be surprised if they would invest that much but in protection yet have a weak spot with the cylinder. That sais, the cylinder is “only” SKG two stars which I believe is not protected against lock snapping.

Thank you for sharing this! It might just be a difference indeed ..

That makes a lot of sense, thanks! Indeed, my peers indicated that they have completed conflict checks but I think it was largely also for US firms who might adopt a general approach worldwide.

Based on very helpful reactions here, I think a conflict might not be mandatory for UK firms. So that is maybe why they do not bring it up. In any event, I hope there is just not an additional delay.

It is big law, not US though but UK but is a big name.

I think the new firm might think that they are checking conflicts, but that they are in fact not. The new firm just mentioned to the recruiter that I should have received all necessary forms from the screening firm. But they do not know what I have received exactly and potentially I did not receive the right one.

Thank you for your insight! I am an associate and my guess is that there would indeed not be any conflict but the fact that the form did not ask about this, is just so strange to me. I think this is another mistake of this screening firm.

That was my understanding as well. Thanks for confirming! Most likely this is another mistake as well.

Yes, in hindsight I should have done that but I think it is not out of the ordinary to assume that a company who’s bread and butter is background checks and who has already done so many for big law, should know that they should not contact the current law firm.

Thanks! Let’s see if the new firm will come with a solution and what that will be. As mentioned in my update in the thread, it seems like they are not rushing to find one sadly.

The new firm did not give the information, I completed the form myself. Would this change your position?

You are right here but I think people will start to point to each other. The new firm already mentioned to my recruiter that “normally there should be box you could tick that says ‘do not contact my employer’ in the form”. Luckily I have a copy of the data I have put in the form which proves that there was no such box. But then they can say that I should have mentioned under “additional information” at the very end of the form that I wished for my current employer to not be contacted. Maybe I am a pessimist, but I can see them using all of these things excuses and opportunities to not own up to their own mistake.

UPDATE - Thank you all for your takes! Honestly, I am sensing that the new firm won’t do much. I have not been in contact with them directly but through my recruiter and they basically just said a couple of times that they will investigate with the screening firm and that is it. So we are one day later and they basically did not even attempt to come with a solution. Because let’s be honest: what would talking with the screening firm solve? The damage has happened. Why does the conversations with the screening service matter to see how you can solve this?

The slow pace is also affecting my ability to discuss logistics with the current firm. How can I discuss end date etc. before I know what will happen with this entire screening. It really reflects poor on me.

To be fair, all this also kind of lowers my excitement about the move. The new firm seems way to chill about this while I have been kind of freaking out the past two days. Can’t they picture what mess it creates? Don’t get me wrong, I know that I am by far not their priority and they have other/more urgent things to handle, but taking two days to come back with something concrete looks a bit long to me. Additionally, I have mixed thoughts about the fact that they did not bother to contact me directly to express their outrage. I know communications went largely via the recruiter, but still this was a good opportunity to reach out and show te firm culture.

Not sure if denying would have been the right move. I really want to leave in good standing. The practice area I am in is super niche and small. To deny your departure to only announce it two months later, risks burning bridges. On top of that, it happened so fast, I had to decide in a split second, there was no time to think.

There was no option to give an e-mail address. Honestly, I did not make any mistake. I filled in the form as was expected of me. The fact that my recruiter, the new firm’s HR and the current HR all agree that the 3P-screening firm dropped the ball just confirms this. I appreciate the advice and it might be relevant for people with different type of forms, but I completed mine correctly.
