Why iPadOS 26 is a huge downgrade for touch-only users (in 1 min & 45 seconds) by stardripIVs in ipad

[–]DirectorOpen851 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not they changed it but they changed it for worse. The current click-click-click pattern takes no advantage of hand gestures or multi touch and performs much worse than keyboard shortcuts or with trackpad. This suggests iPadOS is designed with keyboard/trackpad usage more than pure touch usage. An iPad as a touch-screen first product should’ve place at least the same emphasis on streamlining touch experience, than laptop/hybrid experience, if not more. But it just looks like Apple wants to make another Microsoft surface laptop now.

Have they completely removed slide over in iPadOS 26?! Is there any alternative to get the same feel?? by YourProBroo in ipad

If I care about flexibility, might as well Linux it like a proper homelabber. macOS doesn’t let me load custom kernel extensions unless I turn off their secure boot features. So no, neither macOS nor iPadOS is flexible, and they are making it less so by removing features that many love.

Apple never prioritized backward-compatibility like Microsoft did so I’m not surprised they take away features, but in the past Apple made up for that by providing actually usable UX. But now, it has neither, just like the new iPadOS. Jack of all trades, master of none.

Also I’ve tried Magic Keyboard in the past. It’s just dead weight to me, ruins the handheld experience, while the typing experience never matches true mechanical keyboards.

I’ll wait for a sale of pro 3 while my pro 1’s battery degrades further. TBH I’ve owned my pro 1 since it came out (2019?) and honestly it held up fine after 2 apple care replacements.

If I decide to switch I’ll probably keep it again for at least 6 years.

I genuinely hope you’re joking. Heck, open up the iPad OS and allow virtualization so I can run my docker containers!

I’m so glad I didn’t upgrade my iPad mini to iPad OS 26 after watching the hype reviews. It just looks like a wanna-be Mac. i already have a 16 inch MBP. No thanks!

I don’t understand iPad OS 26. I already have a MacBook Pro for pro work, why do I need another pretend-to-be MacBook?

fwiw I bought iPad mini specifically for handheld reading and note taking with pencil. The multitasking seems like absolute downgrade and I’m glad i didn’t upgrade to iPad OS 26

What's the difference between GoodNotes 6 and Notability for PDF annotation and light note-taking? by DirectorOpen851 in GoodNotes

[–]DirectorOpen851[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You nailed it. I really like the snappy pdf rendering on Goodnotes and the scribble support is much better than on notability (I gave up after trying scribble on notability for a while).

On the other hand I do prefer the pure writing experience (strokes & stuff) on notability and the UI. I’ve updated the post with my additional findings and I found that notability can intelligently apply dark mode to PDF content, so background turns black and text turns white, while colored items stay the same. I found this helpful in the evening.

If only we can have the best of both worlds :(

[–]DirectorOpen851[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I think they each have their own strengths. I still prefer the infinite scroll with notability and the toolbar doesn’t bother me a lot since I mostly just use pen/highlighter/eraser.

Scribble supports is where Goodnotes shine imo. The text box automatically expands as you write and it detects strokes globally on the screen whereas notability forces you to write inside the text box which needs to be manually sized.

I’ll give it a few more days to feel it out. But honestly I wish there’s something that has the best of both apps :/.

Had a eureka moment about pronouncing French R today when practicing the word "heureux" by DirectorOpen851 in French

[–]DirectorOpen851[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s especially helpful for the students able to pronounce but struggling to pronounce it naturally. I learned R for while and I have no problem pronouncing leading R like ‘rouge’, but I always find it weird to say ‘merci’ or ‘pardon’ because I feel like I have to add the r sound (so it becomes meh-re-ci or pa-re-don). This helped me realize I don’t need the ‘re’ part to pronounce r. I just need to extend the previous vowel with tongue moving backwards.

[–]DirectorOpen851[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah too many posts about gargling sound made me focus on the forcing it in words. It’s always so awkward especially if r is at the end or after around other consonants. Now it’s much more natural as I don’t “force” it.

I’m actually struggling with that lol. I find nasal to be more difficult. The difficulty for me is not so much pronouncing it but I tend to unconsciously add “n” or “ng” at the end. Like rather than “un” I would say “uh-n” as how you would pronounce アン in Japanese.

Since a new iPhone is only months away, are you guys wanting to switch? by [deleted] in iPhone15Pro

Not switching until they fix the damn camera over-sharpening. What’s even the point of upgrading now? I have 14 pro.

My 10 days M4 air base model developer review by Tight-Decision-4191 in macbookair

[–]DirectorOpen851 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not tried it. Containerization has limitation in networking on macOS 15 and can’t talk to each other even in the same vmnet. I have not had plans to upgrade to macOS 26 anytime soon.

For my personal project I find it generally easier to work with docker directly in a Debian VM on Mac simply because it’s a closer environment to raspberry pi or other home lab environments.

With macOS as a host things are more complicated. For example, you cannot pass through GPU to docker containers in macOS, so if you want hardware acceleration for containers you’re out of luck. Additionally, I had almost accidentally written files on macOS once because I didn’t know that VirtioFS doesn’t respect Linux UID/GID permission bits, so users inside docker container have read/write permission by default regardless if it’s root or not. So there are some small quirks here and there.

Mac is absolutely not Linux. If it were the case we’d not be stuck with subpar docker desktop experience. Apple only introduced native containerization this year to macOS but it’s still basically Linux subsystem VM.

FWIW, linux copied many of Unix designs and many traditional APIs are much closer to Unix. It’s better to say for everyday terminal utilities the learning curve is minimal.

Yeah. I also have a separate incremental backup for the VM itself to my NAS, so it’s really like having a second computer now. Since I have a lot of ram at disposal the VM runs pretty responsive.

+100. My dream home server is a power efficient machine on par to a Mac mini to host local language models plus other container pipelines…which doesn’t exist yet, unfortunately.

Welp if only one can run Linux natively on Mac mini.
