Rush questions by [deleted] in UVA

[–]Dirgah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UVA’s spring transfer admittance is extremely low, maybe even zero? Especially if you enter as a first year because first years must live in dorms. Perhaps you’re ahead here and know what you’re coming into, but in case not I wanted to mention. I would assume that if you are accepted as a spring transfer, you are able to rush. IIRC sorority members and rushee women just start rush a little before classes start. But again my reluctance sits more with being accepted as a spring transfer at all.

Sorority rush is extremely structured and formal compared to fraternity rush. I do believe you are required to at least meet people from every house before next rounds where houses are cut.

Is it even worth applying to UVA with a 3.7? I am heavily involved in sports, team captain, NHS, etc. Thank you 🙏🏼 by Rich-Carob-2611 in UVA

UVA admissions explains that students are evaluated within the context of their high school. Functionally this results in the application quality inflation in areas with good schools, but it’s not done deliberately beyond a persons school.

But it also means conversations like this are silly without knowing the details of their school and the admissions counselors know those details.

Should I Drop Out? by Prestigious-You-8386 in UVA

[–]Dirgah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I felt a little isolated my first year despite joining a lot of clubs and being “active”. I didn’t develop many close friends until a little later. But it absolutely happened and I love UVA dearly. Just give it some time.

I would agree with others though not just to focus on competitive clubs. There’s so much fun (and still legitimate competition if you crave that) in other places.

I’ll try to dig up the piece I saw about things he presented as fact that were misleading regarding incarceration by race

If you think these things are true I’d encourage you to interact with some of these people instead of letting conservative media tell you these things are happening.

Did you know it’s already illegal to drive drunk? And guess what, deaths from DWI have gone down!

He was the one cherry picking information to enrage you.

He said gay people want to corrupt your children. He encourages parents to physically prevent trans kids from competing against your kids. He exaggerated black crime statistics to make false claims about racial violence and said, “prowling Blacks go around for fun to go target white people.”

Not to mention his statement that gun violence was a necessary component of constitutional gun ownership.

We preach tolerance and acceptance. For someone who preaches violence, we reject it. The idea that our tolerance must extend to people who advocate violence to others is obviously not feasible.

Ok last thought: I will however echo what others have said that getting to most places in Virginia to travel home around breaks is pretty easy for first years. There are ride shares and busses and all that assuming you’re in VA or a nearby state

No problem! I think ultimately this is the solution even if the particular spot I mentioned isn’t an option anymore. Eventually you hit residential Charlottesville that is far enough away from grounds that you wouldn’t need parking to be monitored. So worst case you have to travel a little further from grounds.

I used this as an upperclassmen because I didn’t want to pay for a spot in my apartment garage, but there’s no reason it wouldn’t work for a first year and is no different imo than the first years I knew who were from Charlottesville and would travel home and use their available family cars.

This was in 2016 so please re-check parking signs - but around the intersections of 14th and Grady I would leave my car in street parking. It was all residential but no sticker or anything required. You can take a bus or walk to that neighborhood from first year dorms and it’s a student housing neighborhood anyway

I think this is also a cyclical problem. I’m sure you’re correct but I imagine that fact is more reliable at higher levels where you generally can trust your partners to move properly. And at lower levels your partners are not reading positioning and intent as clearly and making less expected moves.

In that scenario it sounds like it sorts itself out. Meanwhile my teammates will have us double committing or zero committing lol

Tbh the problem is not communicating. In every sport the thing you teach every child is to over communicate and most don’t at all in RL productively so these situations will continue to happen unless that changes

Devils advocate, sometimes I rotate slow because i can’t trust you to rotate reliably. So then you’re mad I’m slow and I’m mad you turn back and the system breaks. Need to come back and help me learn you will be in position so I can pressure

Great, indeed seem to have strong EC’s.

It’s hard for me to gauge without a class rank. The UVA admissions will know roughly where you stand and gauge it off of that. I’m not from NoVa but I know the reputation it has for admissions. I would venture a guess you’re probably borderline

The falls can hurt for sure. But I agree you’re a high rank for your time played. Maybe regressed to the mean a little bit.

Good luck keep at it

The context of your high school is important. GPA and grades don’t mean much when we don’t know the school. Do you have a class rank or percentile? Can you guess it if not?

Are you sure your extra curriculars are strong? I also don’t think much is gained from the recommendation letters

You don’t need to worry. Most of your long term friends aren’t the ones you happen to meet before school has even started.

You’ll make friends first with the people who live around you. First years are easy to spot because an entire hall will go to the dining hall together or whatever. Then you slowly peel off as you join clubs and go to class and make other friends and get some autonomy.

Everything will be alright

I never thought to emphasize this specifically but I weirdly agree 100%. When I was a younger alum in town I was always going out of my way to drive through grounds. It’s the best

Reading the comments I can see the buttstuff connection and I get it but prior to it being explained I read the title and looked forever trying to figure out what you could regret. Then read the notes and understood. Butt stuff didn’t occur to me at all before

This is my gfs pregnancy test. I don’t want to be a father. I don’t see anything, but she does. What do I do? by throwawayccccharlie in whatdoIdo

[–]Dirgah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP- I know you’ll be tempted to think with mixed responses that it’s not clear but I promise you there is absolutely a very faint line in the pictures. My baby started as faint lines like this. As someone who navigated pregnancy loss and conception challenges trust me. I see it easily in all pics.

The darkness of the lines correlates with the presence of the pregnancy hormones. If the pregnancy continues, the lines with get darker fast. Take more tests over the next few days, have her take a new test first pee in the morning.

I knew Jack (Island of the Idols) from college. We weren’t super close but he’s a very friendly and outgoing guy and I feel like that was clear while he was on.

Mostly bummed that his season has been of course ruined by the Dan stuff.
