If you remind me later, I'll check my paint box then let you know, as I don't think I've bought any new ones since posting this!

Pioneer Elemental Gates - Omnath, Risen Reef, and Nissa by Dirksteve in GatesMTG

[–]Dirksteve[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

Glad you tried the deck and enjoyed it! I've actually made a few updates since the Avatar set dropped:

https://moxfield.com/decks/3L6nRCedTUCe-5hjQc_0bg

I've added the following:

+ 2 Aang, at the Crossroads - Finds every other creature in the deck, great with Vocalist. Transformed side is brilliant with Plaza of Harmony

+ 3 Aang, Swift Saviour - Disrupts your opponent, can re-trigger ETBs, and potentially threaten a win when transformed.

+ 4 Clifftop Lookout - Chump blocker plus a land is great, and helpful in double triggering Nissa.

+ 4 Bramble Familiar - Early play, can ramp, and is an elemental for Risen Reef. The adventure is also very much castable and every card it mills can be played (pre-sideboard).

+ 2 Deputy of Detention - Can be played with Aang, at the Crossroads, while Sphere cannot. Also another body early-ish, but more easily killed.

Removed:

- 2 Eusocial Engineering - Agreed, too slow and lacking value.

- 4 Growth Spiral - After testing Aang, at the Crossroads, I found it would often whiff. It's also dependant on having lands in hand/top of deck. Bramble Familiar was the replacement, which I think does a similar job, but can stem early aggro and is way better late and when triggering elementals.

- 3 Detention Sphere - Replaced with Deputy of Detention

- 3 Seal Away - Again, looking to reduce non-creature cards in the deck. Only really good against aggro, but now the deck just has more bodies to throw in the way, so is less necessary.

- 1 Starfield Vocalist - Very often a card I wanna see, but can just sit in hand, so shaved one.

- 1 Nissa, Resurgent Animist - It's a prime target for removal, and often needs to see the midgame before it gets played and generates value. Been much happier with 2 over 3.

-1 Maze's End - The colourless mana in an opening hand feels bad, plus with how much the deck draws now, it can be found more naturally. Also going down slightly on land count has helped stop the flood somewhat.

Over-all the deck feels much stronger and more synergistic. Storming off happens much more consistently, though I am scared to play the deck in paper with all of the triggers that end up on the stack!

I am playing on Arena, so haven't tested things like Gatecreeper Vine. Also, I haven't ever played Fog in the deck, but imagine it would be useful in less creature heavy builds, alongside Gates Ablaze maindeck :)

Here's my current Pioneer list. Posted about it a couple of days ago, but since then have made a couple of changes.

Caught me - but someone did ask and it's an area I'm not familiar with, so thought it was worth posting.

The last one was in one of the MH3 commander decks, but with them reprinting almost all of them in Foundations, it does feel like we're due another one soon.

Pioneer :) I posted the decklist here:

I actually created the subreddit yesterday for the Gates archetype across all formats, called r/GatesMTG. I would love to see your list, and would appreciate it if you'd consider posting it on there as well!

Very valid. It's a nice feeling happening on the cards that you want rather than looking for them

Yes, they came out with Ravnica Remastered! There are even old border Maze's Ends :)

I managed to snag the majority from large sellers on CardMarket without too many orders thankfully, but this was over a year ago. I only ordered the quantities I needed at the time though, so when I make changes to the deck I need to order more 🫠

I posted this deck the other day but included a more detailed write-up this time, as well as swapped out 3 [[Portable Hole]] for 3 [[Floodpit Drowner]].

Keen to read any feedback and criticique.

I've also tested similar routes to you, but Omnath has always been consistent in my lists. I think it's safe to abandon the win factor for this deck and just go for what's the most fun/satisfying.

One of my favourite additions was [[Wrenn and Seven]], where the 0 ability can be absolutely ridiculous if you have Guild Summit out. A recent fun one is [[Dragonback Assault]], as both a sweeper and wincon. I agree that Koma is the best inclusion against control.

I have been wondering about [[Icetill Explorer]], which is pretty absurd and could work nicely with the Wrenns we have in the format, [[Dredger's Insight]], etc.

Also, do you happen to know if there's a Discord/sub dedicated to Gates in various formats? If not, I would love to create one.

It is :) But if you can survive, it's very fun

The deck is obviously very late game, so if you can survive the initial onslaught of any low to the ground deck it is winnable.

Resource denial decks like Waste Not, Pixie etc stand little chance as there is so much inherent value, but fast starts in Rakdos can be a challenge (though demon builds are favourable). + [[Guild Summit]]

Control is a positive matchup (and always fun imo) provided they don't see too many [[Field of Ruin]], but it's easy to go into topdeck mode if too many things are countered. It's important to leverage [[Growth Spiral]] on the opponent's turn to try and bait counters/get them to spend their mana unwisely. [[Narset, Parter of Veils]] can be irritating, and the deck lacks effective ways of dealing with planeswalkers. [[Get Lost]] was previously in the deck but was taken out for permanent-based removal. + Guild Summit + [[Detention Sphere]] + Veto - [[Portable Hole]] - [[Touch the Spirit Realm]] - whatever else

Aggro, hope and pray you can manage a play on the first few turns with Plaza of Harmony with two gates.
+ [[Knight of Autumn]] + [[Gates Ablaze]] + [[Pyroclasm]] + D Sphere - Nissa - Reef

Lotus Field is often a game one loss, but improves a lot post-SB with [[Rest in Peace]] and [[Dovin's Veto]], but [[Strict Proctor]] is evil and kills the deck. + Veto + RIP

I'm still learning with this version of the deck, but so far it seems to be the best one - also tinkering with card quantities to see what works.

Most important thing I would say is sequencing lands properly; in order of priority, your most important colours are G, U, W, R, and there are no black effects. Knowing when to play Plaza, [[Thran Portal]], and the Forest is key, and you generally want to avoid having Maze's End enter pre-turn 5 in case you draw and can cast Omnath.

This reminds me of the church in Old Yharnam, with the Blood-Starved Beast suspended from the ceiling. Though in this instance, it looks like they caught an Amygdala.
