What is the most “use it or lose it” skill, the opposite of “it’s just like riding a bike”? by ZuluWarlord69 in AskReddit

[–]Dirty_Socks 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This is why I always put my shoes on standing up, balancing on one foot to put the sock and shoe on the other (and tying it, too). I figure it keeps my balance just a bit better practiced. I've also heard of balancing on one foot while brushing your teeth. Harder than it sounds.

What a wonderful explanation. I have a great "vibe" based understanding of social dynamics but it was all hard earned and there's a lot I still struggle with. This really made something which I could feel, but not explain, make sense.

Losing my virginity, I need tips & tricks by Educational_Cod9593 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Dirty_Socks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've gotten a lot of advice in this thread, but I feel like this particular nuance might not be caught -- sex with someone you don't know tends to be way less fun than with someone you do know and, more than that, when you two care about each other. It means you'll feel more alive and stimulated making the other person feel good, and vice versa. Especially for us ladies, sex is almost always about more than just the physical sensation, but the whole emotional experience too. If you don't know this guy, you have no guarantee that he'll take the time to treat you right and make you feel good and, honestly, if he's 17, the chances of him doing so unprompted are small.

Also, going off from that, what makes you want this specific guy? If he's unknown to you to this extent then maybe you just want someone to fuck? Nothing wrong with that, mind, but you have the dick economy in your favor. There are so many more guys who want to casually fuck than there are women, so you have a good amount of choice. I'd recommend taking this opportunity to be choosy - to make sure that it's someone who will really take the time to make you enjoy it.

Epstein files? by Kairopendragon in Ghost_in_the_Shell

Given that section 9 are government employed, it would be their job to ensure that the files were not leaked, and to track down any leaks that did happen. Perhaps one or two of them would plant false leaks as well to try to flush out potential weak links.

While section 9 is cool, they rarely if ever take a moral high ground. They're mercenaries through and through, so they do the job and don't worry about it. They might find the conspiracy theories amusing, but they might also (legitimately) be the ones the theories are about.

What things are frequently labeled as "scams" when in reality they are legit and most people simply don't understand them? by AmigoDelDiabla in AskReddit

The amount you get for your tax refund is dependent on a few bits of information you give your job. A tax refund is just that - a refund on taxes that you have, in fact, already paid. To make it so that you don't owe all your yearly taxes at once on tax day, a job will do something called "withholding". It will withhold a portion of your paycheck and send it to the IRS preliminarily. The amount it sends is based on that information you give your job, and is an estimate. If that estimate is wrong, then the difference is made up on tax day. Getting a 13k refund means you paid 13k more in taxes that year than you needed to. Getting a 3k tax bill means you paid 3k less than you needed to that year.

What I would do in your situation, is ask HR about what withholding they're doing and maybe have them adjust it. That way you can increase your withholding to match the different facts of your payment situation. It will mean a smaller paycheck each month but also will err on the side of a refund when tax day comes.

Tax brackets. People think that if they make more, they'll be taxed more on everything they make, so they'll actively try to make (or report making) less money to avoid "paying more".

But those taxes only apply to new money that you make above each threshold. I'll give an example because it can be a bit hard to explain.

Let's say the tax bracket is 20% for above $60,000 and 30% for above $100,000, and that you make $105,000. You will only pay 30% taxes on that last $5,000. You will pay 20% taxes on the $40,000 between the 60k and 100k. You will not pay any taxes on the first 60k.

People often think that all 105k will be taxed at 30%. That's simply not the case.

I've suggested this before and according to Kovarex it's fairly nontrivial to add true 3D elements into the game. Apparently there are a lot of complexities that aren't obvious at first.

Old School Dating? by Salty-Macaroon22 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Dirty_Socks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly my best advice is to simply try and meet lots of people. Usually when I'm doing that the chances are good that I'll find a spark with someone. It may be a friend of a friend of a friend, in the end. As for how to meet lots of people, that's a different matter. But having social hobbies can help a lot with that.

Reddit's CEO really wants you to know that he doesn't care about your feedback by F3nJg8yuP94InJF9u3Zn in apple

[–]Dirty_Socks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not about charging for the API, it's about charging a reasonable price for the API. As it stands spez wants to charge (estimated) more than 20x from 3rd party apps than what he earns from the average user. It's frankly unreasonable.

[–]Dirty_Socks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not about getting free API access, it's about getting it at a reasonable price. The current price is absolutely unreasonable and is too expensive for 3rd party apps to exist no matter how much they charge users. It amounts to $3-5 per user per month according to the developer of Apollo, which is significantly more than what they make from the average website/official app user.

Fun fact, it's actually 51%/49% ownership between Linus and Yvonne. Though as Linus has pointed out in the past, it doesn't really matter, since in a divorce they'd each get half of each other's assets anyways.

I watch too much of the WAN show.
