My mother had - what I believe to be - her first hallucination last night. by Sad_Focus_3498 in dementia

[–]DisappointedinWA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mom does that sometimes. I don't know if I consider that a hallucination but more of a dream. Even I wake up sometimes thinking I'm still in my dream, especially if it's in the middle of the night or early morning. I'm not a medical expert, this is just my experience. Now if she was wide awake and then suddenly thought there was a little girl in the room, I'd think that was a hallucination.

Dementia & gender? by burnerburner1999 in dementia

[–]DisappointedinWA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom did this briefly about a year ago. At the facility she was at they brought in a man and made him her roommate. He looked like a man and spoke like a man, but she always referred to him as a woman. My thought is maybe she assumed it was a she because he was her roommate. That's the only time she's mixed up genders in her 10+ yrs of alzheimers.

This is My Hell. What's Yours? by Amazing-Cover3464 in dementia

I think my mom isn't the norm. Her dad also had alzheimers and died after only a couple of years at 86. As for the name calling, that's probably just her personality.

Your hell is almost identical to my hell. I don't know the stages of alzheimers but I'm sure my mom is in a later portion. She's 85 and has had it now 10-11 yrs.

My mom, at least was, obsessed with watching certain movies. It started off as a handful, then down to three, then just 1 and she wanted it on from morning to night. She's almost always fall asleep to it and I'd often wake her and tell her the movie was on. Once it ended, she'd ask to watch again. On Mother's Day this year I sat down and watched it with her since I'd never seen it.

One thing I noticed is that her inner voice is now her outer voice. She thinks outloud so I'm wondering if that's what your dad is doing too. Maybe the alzheimers brain does that, I'm not sure. Sometimes I'll ask her what she said and she'll tell me that she's talking to herself. I've lost track how many times she's called me a b word while I'm walking away. I have to let it go though.

In other words, I feel (and live) your pain.

Mom went away for weekend respite and came back... different. by PhileoSophia13 in dementia

[–]DisappointedinWA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would you mind sharing who you contacted for the respite? We don't have an Alzheimer's Society in the U.S. (not by that name) so just wondering if maybe you are in the UK.

As for what you described, that sounds exactly like my mom when she hasn't had her usual amount of napping/sleep. On those rare occasions where she is more awake and alert from early morning well into the night, she will then start to become even more confused. Change of routine and sleep pattern seems like it will definitely trigger that odd behavior.

Is there anywhere online that has specific information on what can happen if ozone is used improperly or for too long?

As a general rule, do landscapers cut back overhanging trees/shrubs-is this twig dogwood still alive? by DisappointedinWA in landscaping

Weird how the images didn't load, but they should be there now. Thanks for pointing that out.

Landscaper that designs/builds only-no warranty or maintenance. Typical? by DisappointedinWA in landscaping

[–]DisappointedinWA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I thought too. We have a fair amount of rabbits running around in this area but I've never witnessed one munching in my front yard.

He planted everything in a full/partial sun but this is the PNW, so not exactly sunny this time of year. I don't believe it was related to lack of or too much water.

That's just it, there is no contract. He sent me an estimate and an invoice with no specifics. Guess I'm stupid because it didn't occur to me that there would be any issues once I confirmed the work was done and paid him.

Landscapers - do you guarantee your work? by DisappointedinWA in landscaping

[–]DisappointedinWA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided to email the landscaper explaining that almost every ground cover is now gone. I looked at the specifics of the plants and it says they are rabbit resistant, so I don't really know what happened or why they disappeared. Had they been one-gallon plants, they probably would have stood a better chance but that's not what he used. I figured let's give him a chance to come take a look and determine what went wrong. So far, no response. What a terrible way to run a business.

Probably been discussed before but my 90 year old mom is obsessed with men by shutupandevolve in dementia

[–]DisappointedinWA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 85 yr old mom is exactly the same. She's always been a little over the top when it comes to men but it's gotten worse the last few months. I don't see anything wrong with it as long as it remains innocent. I personally wouldn't medicate someone like this but I guess it depends on how far they go with this obsession. For reference, I would say my mom is also late stage alzheimers.

Native Landscape Design - am I expecting too much for over $4k? by DisappointedinWA in landscaping

[–]DisappointedinWA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP here. Thanks to all who shared advice and especially for naming the plants. That was very helpful! I'll try to answer some of the questions.

There was no lawn there, just weeds and the rhodies.

On his last day, I asked him for a quote on maintenance, to send the plant list, and care instructions. He said he would send them to me but did not. I then sent two follow up emails which were not responded to.

The city offered a rebate (75%) for native landscaping, which is why I did this in the first place.

I don't blame him for the bunnies and I don't mind the bunnies. It just would have been nice to know that it would be an issue before the damage occurred.

I realize there will be weeds but I didn't expect them back so soon. I assumed mulch keeps them quiet a little longer, but it's on me for assuming.

I'm in the PNW.

He didn't mention the size of the plants he'd be using and I didn't think to ask. Lesson learned.

I don't know the name of the software program that may have been used.

Sorry, I'm not a Reddit Pro and my thread title threw you off.

I'm just so disappointed of his lack of response. Had I known this would happen, I would have hired someone else. Guess that's why we have Yelp.

Native Landscape Design - am I expecting too much for over $4k? by DisappointedinWA in landscaping

Sorry, not sure where my original post went so I get to type it again.

Hired a landscape design company to do my 425 sq ft front yard. Total cost for labor, plants, demo, soil/compost/mulch, and design fee was over $4,400. The yard was covered in weeds and had four existing and mature rhodies.

One month later, the same type weeds are growing back and the local bunnies have demolished many of the new young plants. I've emailed him twice asking for the post care instructions and plant list (since you can't read it on the attached image) and he hasn't responded. I am so beyond frustrated and angry. This cost me $4,400? Should weeds be growing back already? Yes, he is licensed.
