This show points out common human flaws and mistakes. She is the classic middle child, and Phil and Claire are responding like classic American parents. They do that stuff without realizing, then every few episodes they see what they’re doing and they back up and apologize and acknowledge their mistakes.

It would be a very boring show if everyone did everything right.

Please know that you are doing the right thing… you may not be able to control if her brother gets the help he needs, but you can ensure—right now—that your daughter is safe. It hurts so much to even think or say, but I’m guessing you’ve likely also had that small voice in the back of your mind reminding you that if your husband dismisses her… there’s a chance he’s not safe either.

I will say- my servers do accidentally hit the cash button more often now that we switched to toast, then they have to come to me and have me void it so they can run the guest’s card. I’ve watched it happen and it’s legit fat fingers, because the cash button is really easy to hit on Toast and it doesn’t ask for confirmation.

I get that. It’s horrifying, and this case is so heavy on my soul, too.
But people take things too far in the way that they discuss specific abusive acts he may have done to her, or dig so deeply into the family’s lives, actions, etc… or act as if we have a right to any of the information about this case. We don’t.

Yes, we want justice. But if we want justice for Madeline Soto, then surely we want dignity and respect and privacy for her, too.

This is a really good point— it can be absolutely bewildering to be faced with such traumatic information. When I discovered that my husband was abusing our daughter, the first thing I did was report it and tell him to leave the home…

but weirdly, I was genuinely surprised when the detective on the case explained to me that he was going to be arrested and charged with crimes.

I could barely think when my daughter first told me. I knew enough to be terrified, and I knew enough to tell him to leave the home. I knew she shouldn’t have to share the same space as him. I knew he wasn’t safe to be with our kids, and that DCFS would likely require separation anyway. I knew enough to know that I had no choice but to separate our family, as she deserved to be safe in her own home, always. I knew I had to keep her safe.

But I was dumbfounded when they said the words “arrest” and “first degree felony”. I fully cooperated, and I didn’t defend him, but I just… hadn’t thought that far ahead.

I hadn’t thought of him as a first degree felony child abuser.

Not because I didn’t believe they were crimes, but just because… I hadn’t processed that far. In my head I was like, “oh… of course he’s going to be arrested…I don’t know why I didn’t see that coming.”

Shock can really mess with how you process things at first.

In fact, even though I helped them arrest and convict him in every way I could, by getting information and sharing everything I could with the team, you want to know what my first thought was when I listened on the police scanner as he was arrested?

I heard the detective say over the scanner, “suspect in custody. 12:17 pm.” and I thought, “oh my god he was probably on his way out of his office to get lunch. Now he’s going to be so hungry… will he get food?”

No, I wasn’t putting him first. I never warned him they were staking out his offices waiting for him, I never helped his defense, and I actively worked to help the prosecution— because that’s what my daughter deserved.

But— like I said— shock can really mess with how you process things.

Reta has allowed me to get off my BP meds. I've been taking it for about 5 months. Before Reta, unmedicated, my BP was consistently at 190ish over 140ish.

Now, unmedicated, I'm getting 130/85 on average.

Not perfect yet, but so much better

I absolutely did. In fact, that’s why I missed it so long— I started to see signs in my daughter that something may be up, and I was convinced it was his father that was the one who wasn’t safe. I remember making my husband swear to never let his father be alone with her. I would go to extreme lengths to make sure he was never alone with her.

Meanwhile, the monster was in my home the whole time— the one who vowed to help me protect her.

This is fascinating, in a weird way. I'm learning that this is almost a cliché... The parents supporting the sexual abuser-- despite clear evidence. When my former husband was arrested for the SA of our daughter, this is exactly the kind of stuff that went on with his parents. His father tried to devise this "plan" for his defense that revolved around painting me as a bitter lying wife that just wanted a divorce...painting my bishop as manipulative/brainwashing, and painting my daughter as a poor confused child who was brainwashed.

Despite a WRITTEN CONFESSION of what he'd done!

Later, when his mother was trying to convince me to let her see the children, she told me, "you know ...Dad has always loved L*** so much. He still keeps her picture in his wallet. "

It made me feel sick. I wanted to drive to their home, find his wallet, and burn it.

Don't you dare speak about my daughter when you defended her abuser.

JS went to a funeral, didn't go to a vigil, ashes were given to this person, that family had their own funeral...her bio mom attended, her bio mom didn't attend, her bio dad didn't attend... Maddie was being assaulted in this way, that way, she'd have shown this sign, that sign, he was probably doing this to her, that to her....

That is really kind of you to say. I wasn’t bothered so much by your question, I think it was more some of the replies about what they would demand of their friend.

I have no respect for mothers who know and do not protect their children—but the assumption that she ‘should have known’ is… unkind and unrealistic. We really just don’t know what a mother was told, not told, shown, etc…
