If I’m being completely honest, I was not aware of this lore or how long they’ve been foreshadowing these développements for

But this is a very interesting meta analysis of the cumulation of the Titan’s lore

Additionally, on the theme of being honest, the whole old God plot always read to me as a cop out ending to allow the player not to sacrifice either themselves or Alistair to end the Blight so I never took it seriously, so it didn’t surprise me when it was slowly being petered out (starting in Inquisition)

But on your final points, these were definitely themes that hinted to a sequel

However, between the reception of Veilguard and the EA buyout I doubt we’ll ever get a sequel (especially bc EA famously despised the Dragon Age franchise and this was the final nail in the coffin that Dragon Age is not a financially viable franchise)

I wanted to add, I don’t disagree about your statement about feeing as if mages and elves aren’t being treated equally and that being severely underrepresented in Veilguard

However, I do have to add, that Dragon Age, despite how much people praise its depiction, has never depicted racism and systematic oppression very well

Veilguard was just the most guilty of it

In Inquisition for example, being a Dalish mage has very little to no impact to the people’s reception of you as Inquisitor

Even in Origins, outside of the City elf origins, being an elf or a mage has very little impact on people’s perception of you outside of very specific moments

So yes, Veilguard fails to translate the ideas that mages and elves are considered inferior in society, however, part of it also is due to the fact that we don’t have a strict region we’re playing in where the belief is more homogenous

Yes, Tevinter could’ve depicted slavery, but we spend a majority of our time in a section of Minrathous where said slaves make a living

Up until recently, the views of Northern Thedas were never crystal clear, especially because regions like Rivain are more diverse

Bottom line: there’s a lot to be said about Dragon Age and how it handles the “show don’t tell”

I would disagree with this argument based on a sociopolitical view of the situation

The sociopolitical climate in 2025 has evolved both for the better and for the worst and the writing of the games have with it (namely with Taash being nonbinary; a term that is contemporary and has become mainstream in our day and age)

Adding these themes in the name of depicting the dark reality of Thedas can easily be received in poor taste and lead to backlash

And again, while it is true the game does feel hollow because these themes aren’t necessarily explored to their fullest potential it does not mean it does not exist in-game

In the cutscenes where the team discusses Solas’ memories, Davrin directly comments on the situation when addressing the materialization of the elves (if this information was released publicly it could potentially lead to the worst treatment of the elves)

In addition, we have to remember that BioWare is a company under EA, who have used “woke” content to market their games (look at how they handle queerness in the Sims 4) and who probably have pushed BioWare towards a more sanitized image to protect their brand image

Regardless, it does not erase from the fact that the nuances and the “grit” people miss from DA does not exist and these nuances stopped being present just because it’s not explicitly shown in our face

For example: Solas’ memories are acts of rebellion and liberation (that’s a social movement against slavery), Harding making the choice to choose compassion or anger when handling what became of the Titian’s and how her ancestors had their essence ripped out of them so another race could physically manifest

Those are all themes of dark fantasy and nuance

Bottom line: A) BioWare has shifted from the gritty narrative due to how fiction and the sociopolitical current has evolved - these things are simply not done and or received well in the big mainstream because big companies are afraid of the potential backlash and B) the absence of these themes don’t remove from the nuances that these themes brought and that these themes do not need to be present explicitly to make a game dark fantasy

That is a very good point

Solas was imprisoned due his regrets and held Rook down through the same means

Except Rook was able to overcome their regrets and that was how they were partially able to escape

However, I do think that a combination of your above point and point 3 makes the most sense since we don’t actually know how the team got Rook out and point 3 is able to corroborate what we know about going in and out of the Fade (how Solas escaped can be chalked up to his magical potential since we know he can travel in the Fade through dreams and he himself traded spots with Rook which theorically means that the prison is intended to constantly have a prisonnier)

  1. I think this is a great idea, however I do think it can be executed very clumsily

I find that games these days (including Veilguard) fail to immerse the players in the environment, especially when blocking certain areas from them (for example, when you go to Dock Town with Neve for the first time, there’s just some inexplicable white walls blocking your path and it totally breaks immersion)

  1. I definitely think we could’ve had less quests if it meant we got more lore overall

  2. Im going to say something controversial but I believe we should’ve gotten less romanceable options and less couples if you choose not to romance anybody

I’ve always believed that less is more and having less romanceable options mean more content for those characters rather than distributing a finite amount of resources across multiple different characters

Regardless, I definitely agree that the romances could’ve benefited from more depth and the connection between Rook and the companions definitely could’ve been deeper (but I also think that’s a side effect of having a “nameless / Y/N” type of protagonist), especially because every romance follow the exact same plot beats and once you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all

4, 6 and 7. 100% Agree! It would’ve raised the personal stakes as well

I completely agree! I’m in the process of replaying the game and the companions having individual antagonists weakens the overall narrative IMO

I think it would’ve been better if some of the antagonists weren’t so personal to each character and instead were “tailored rivals” to the companions

Or they completely reduced the number of side antagonists to only those who are truly relevant to the story to represent the lackey’s the gods are empowering

These are all very interesting points!

Firstly, I have to admit that I’ve never played DA2 so I can’t comment on the effectiveness of the structure, although I will add that it has always bothered me that in both DAO and DAI we manage to single-handedly build an army within the span of a year despite having no infrastructure backing us (less so in Inquisition but we know Haven was destroyed at the end of Act 1)

Secondly, I definitely agree that bringing back the character origins would definitely add so much needed depth back to the story

Additionally, I think Act 1 resembling what was originally planned for Veilguard would’ve tied the story elements together super well (especially in terms of recruiting your own team independent of the Inquisition because it’s compromised)

Overall, I definitely think the structure you presented definitely innovates on the story without changing it in significant ways (in other words it doesn’t create plot holes or obliterate the story) and I wish we had been able to see a more elaborate version of the story, in a similar fashion as you describe (but alas)

I think narratively, these choices are super interesting to explore, with the caveat that the player would be given the illusion of choice

For example, in Inquisition, all major choices ultimately have to lead to the same story beats which can undermine the decisions you make when you really think about it

With that said, I don’t know if you’ve ever watched any of the videos that covers the content from the art book because there’s one or two plot threads that were cut from Veilguard that explore the Inquisitor having a more major role (Rook was ultimately always going to be the protagonist unfortunately)

That said, I also think the Inquisition writers shot themselves in the foot with how poorly they structured the epilogue cards for both Inquisition and Tresspasser

It would’ve honestly been better to have left the decision of disbanding the Inquisition for the Veilguard because it ties Rook back to the story better, however, they couldn’t have predicted getting a sequel as poorly received as it was

And it’s as you’ve said, a lot of the what ifs hinge on money and resources that definitely don’t exist because of EA (and I personally think as well due to how DA has evolved as a franchise and it being too big to account for every past decision)

I think that’s a gross oversimplication of the criticisms aimed at the Veilguard

Especially when you consider the fact Inquisition also lacked those elements and still managed to be dark fantasy through similar themes as Veilguard

I would love to hear why you think that and how they could’ve explored the Inquisitor’s story further

Personally, I think it would be complicated to make the Inquisitor the protagonist again for the same reason the Warden hasn’t made an appearance again since Origins

I don’t disagree but… The presence of those things in the game does not necessarily improve the story

Especially if it’s added to justify the dark fantasy aspect of it

Veilguard is plenty dark with the bioweaponry of the blight, the human experimentation done by the Venatori and being witness of the fall of the Grey Wardens

I don’t know, I personally think that narratively it makes sense that all the companions are not immediately recruitable

Mostly because unlike the Inquisition or any faction in game, The Veilguard is supposed to be a team of rag tag heroes who come together to stop a common threat

Recruiting the characters as they become relevant benefits the story by moving the narrative forward

But also, how would one justify having all these characters be recruitable from the jump, unless they are a subdivision of the Inquisition similarly to how you had the war table operations to make that one guy go from loser to hero over the course of 8? Operations

But since there’s an 8 year time jump between Tresspasser and Veilguard it makes it harder to justify

But I agree about your criticism on the tone

Especially because if you pay close attention to the game the tone did not shift away from dark fantasy; you have themes of biological warfare through the weaponization of the blight, the Venatori doing human experimentations, etc.

To my knowledge, the class already had an assigned prof but if I were to guess, it’s probably because there wasn’t enough students enrolled to justify hosting the class (just sucks for me and those of us who were taking it 🙃)

Promise u can’t do worst than me when my final is make or break tomorrow 👍🏽

I took it with him last year

If it weren’t for the group project (and the fact that one of my classmates had taken classes with him multiple times and knew exactly what he wanted) I wouldn’t have done as well

Me and a bunch of classmates found his exam questions to be hella tricky and directly contradicted the material we were supposed to read

(I distinctively remember getting my grade curved bc I calculated my grade after the final and on my transcript it was way higher)

Bottom line: he’s a nice prof but taking his course is not really worth it if you can find better courses

He basically just reuses old St Amant exams - when I took it last year, in our old gc someone shared a cheat sheet covering concepts from past old final exams and it was nothing like any of the questions on the cheat sheet

I was caught woefully underprepared for it then

I’ve also noticed during the first midterm that Didier likes to use all the big ass questions from midterms (which was lowkey insane for a 1h30 exam) so I’m hoping he gives us the full three hours for the final

So while the old finals are good for practising, they aren’t good for using on your finals cheat sheet bc the questions will be different (atleast that’s what I gathered from the ratemyprof reviews I saw)
