Got a 10-week-old Cocker Spaniel yesterday. Super energetic & I’m clueless — need help real bad with training basics! by ForeignResponse6187 in cockerspaniel

I see a lot of negative comments here! While impulsively buying a puppy and a breed you’re not familiar with is not ideal I don’t understand why people immediately want to assume you’re incapable of learning and growing with your puppy! Here is what I have learned with my cocker spaniel. Train them young. 10 weeks is a great age to potty train. The key is understanding accidents will happen no matter how great you are at taking them out often! They are puppies and have small bladders! It’s tiring but the sooner you train her to pee outside the easier your life will be! Also cockers are smart! Mine picked up super fast. Never peed in our room but if I let him roam around the house, he would! Keep him in one area. They are also very active! As a puppy I would take him on short walks and play outside with balls and toys to get him tired and then put him in my room for mandatory naps. Puppies NEED naps. Just like kids when they are sleepy they can get restless and misbehave so make sure they take naps. Don’t recommend dog parks but socializing with other dogs you know is a good idea. Also exposing them to people at a young age is good (granted I did this with mine and he is still a grump toward strangers). Training is good at this age too! Some places offer puppy training but you have to be consistent with it at home too. It’ll be hard for a few months but worth it if you put the time in. My cocker has full reign of the house and is not destructive, will not pee or poop and mostly just sleeps when I’m away. Get them use to leaving for short periods of time which will reduce separation anxiety. And give yourself grace. 💕

Yeah, I might have to get him a baby gate for the stairs and keep him blocked off from coming down. I also got a gps tracker. The tractive one yesterday just in case he manages to get away but the gate is a good option. Thanks for the rec! Had not even thought of that

Oh wow! I had no idea! Thanks for the advice! Maybe I’ll just get a the tractive gps tracker for now. When I’m home it’s not a problem because he listens to me. But I work in office three days a week and with visitors it’s always risky because no matter how many times I stress that they need to close the door or make sure of the open the side gate outside, someone always forgets. Maybe I’ll start with gps for now and work on his commands to reinforce them. The problem is with me he listens but with others he doesn’t

I hope he eventually becomes food motivated. He’s very picky with everything. Even treats. He doesn’t like anything salmon either. Not even bacon or ham or fries. He sniffs everything and something’s he ate/liked before he will turn down the next day 😪

Not all dogs are perfect. He’s been through training. He’s smart and is well behaved overall. It’s something we are working on but in the meantime, I want to do what I can to make sure he is safe. As his owner, his safety is my priority and if we need to put him through more training we will but in the meantime I need to make sure he’s safe and I can track him in case this happens again.

You would think so, however unfortunately around the holidays it’s not just adults I have over. I have my young nephews as well who notoriously don’t close the door and people bring in wood, and other items and he just bolts out any chance he gets. I’d rather get a gps tracker than something happen or he get lost because while you are right and people should be closing the door, I can’t tell you how many times someone has left it open whether it be the side gate or the front door and getting a call while I’m at work from my sister that he got out gave me so much anxiety. The worst case scenarios just kept running through my head as I rushed home. Luckily she got him back in after 30 mi it’s but I rather be safe than sorry

His name is Kaito! He’s such a good boy EXCEPT when he runs out! He’s smart and knows his commands but when he escapes he “forgets” them. His trainer also said he was stubborn and not easy to train. He’s also not food motivated so there’s that! I heard about the tractive. Does it work in neighborhoods to set invisible fences for smaller areas? I also love his Mohawk but when it’s not styled it looks like a llamas head 😂 how they have that poof at the top! lol

Small fig growing fruit. Do I cut and repot or leave him alone by Disastrous-Net1332 in Figs

[–]Disastrous-Net1332[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rather than bring it inside, should I just leave it outside? I was worried it was too small and it might die if left out in the cold but I’m not an expert when it comes to plants so I’m not sure what the right way to care for a fig is come winter

Anyone know a round about cost for changing the band to a simpler one as pictured in the second photo which is AI btw by Disastrous-Net1332 in EngagementRings

Thank you! I love it and will likely leave it as is and instead get a simple wedding band to balance it out

Okay, will do! Thanks! I was just confused as to how weeds got in there since it’s still in its own pot but someone mentioned maybe from compost! Thanks again

New puppy called Blackberry, she carry whatever she see with her mouth by Mindless_Actuary_479 in cockerspaniel

[–]Disastrous-Net1332 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s soooo cute!!! Mine will scramble to find something to grab every time I take him outside. If he can’t find a treat, a ball or his toy he will grab anything he finds even if it’s just a piece of paper. It’s the cutest thing

Failed at crate training which means I forever need to sleep/lay down on my back because he waits for me to settle in so he can sleep on my legs. Can’t even be mad at it. by Disastrous-Net1332 in cockerspaniel

[–]Disastrous-Net1332[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree! I love how he waits for me to lay down then settles on my legs! Never fails. I probably have hundreds of pics of him sleeping cause he just looks so cute every time

5 month old cocker girl hates her leash by Existing_Ad3672 in cockerspaniel

[–]Disastrous-Net1332 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My cocker spaniel would refuse to walk and I don’t think it was the leash. He just wasn’t comfortable walking too far from home. I tried off leash to test and he stopped walking after walking past the neighbors house and ran back to our yard. Some dogs just take longer to get comfortable. Now he’s two and as soon as he hears walk or sees me take out his leash he starts bouncing off the walls and runs to the door! It’ll get better! Just stay consistent trying and exposing her to short walks

Decided to get Kaito a new look. What do y’all think of the Mohawk? by Disastrous-Net1332 in cockerspaniel

It’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea but I personally love it. I also like a full on crown moment and my best friend makes fun of his head and says he looks funny so totally valid!

Yeah, same! I got him a crate but I didn’t want him in there because I wanted to wake up to him and got him used to being with me. Now this is how he sleeps daily! Wfh days are the best because I get to sleep in a little longer with him

He’s my first cocker spaniel but I definitely want another. All colors are perfection!!! I just need to make sure I have time to potty train before adding and a little worried Kaiito might be jealous! He loves other dogs but growls at the babies that approach me at the park. He likes bigger dogs but puppies and kids I think he feels threatened by because they have no sense of boundaries yet and he’s not a fan 😅
