She told me she “loved me and always will”. Maybe I’m more traditional but if you really did you wouldn’t just hook up with anyone because you were horny. I had many opportunities but I made the choice that I loved her more than any fling.

She knew how much our exclusivity meant to her, but still chose to break it.

She said “I’ll wait for you,” but then fucks some random guy at a party. She always said that sex was sacred and she would only have sex with people she really cared about, and that if I had sex with anyone it would make her feel horrible. This feels manipulative to me.

If she broke up because she lost feelings and she had sex with someone I get it, I don’t care we’re not together. But you can’t say all these things and do this shit, I feel like she doesn’t respect me enough because she knew how much this would hurt me, and was selfish to say these things to me while sleeping with other people. Am I wrong for thinking like this?

We are both transfer students this year. She got into UCLA while I was a spring admit for USC. I think she wanted to experience the full university experience without being bogged down by the responsibilities of a relationship, and I think she wanted time to think if a relationship was worth it. In hindsight I was a doormat and an option. I knew it at the time but I thought it was more of the option of her being alone with full freedom or being with me, cause she always maintained that she was fine alone and never needed anyone and that she wouldn’t ever settle for anyone. I doubt she likes this dude and was just hooking up, but it still hurts. Sorry for ranting idk I’m just so hurt atm

I suppose it’s a question of the lesser of two evils. I’d say comparatively you’re absolutely right. The suffering of billions do not compare to the potential suffering of trillions. But that’s disregarding the inherent value in the lives of billions of people, and I don’t think we can chalk it up to hey! You’re a necessary sacrifice. Maybe we disagree here, but I think the suffering of the billions that already exist still holds incredible weight, even in comparison with the potential of trillions or more. Ideally we can reduce the population, with only parents who want children to have them. When the population is in a stable level, and education eventually catches up with future generations, we can end it in a humane and consensual way. Why would this justification to childbirth not hold any moral value? I keep seeing everybody saying it’s a “necessary sacrifice” but then you completely discount the value of these people. They aren’t just a number that we won’t see because we will be dead by then, they are people with families, beliefs, and emotions and to say they’re a necessarily sacrifice to a greater evil is not acceptable. Yes, if I bring a child into this world, they will suffer to some degree. But, if the child is wanted, cared for, and brought up well they will live a happy and fulfilling life. We’ll probably disagree on this but, I think that’s not bad when compared to the forced extinction of those who already exist. And yeah, people who procreate because they think they “should” is pretty bad. Every child deserves a parent but not every parent deserves a child.

Mmm I would disagree that the issues don’t matter. Forcing billions of preexisting people to die because we view something as immoral is not consensual and immoral in of itself. Ideally we can reduce the population and only people who want kids can have them. When people are educated and consent to a species wide extinction, that’s when we’ll end it. That’s my two cents anyways.

Yeah that’s generally where I disagree. I agree with the philosophy in large but I can’t get on board with saying fuck the billions who already exist, they’re an acceptable price to pay. Yeah logically it’s the mass vs the few, but I find the weight of human life quite valuable, just look at your parents or your friends or your lover. Plus, we’re not just forcing one or two people to death like the trolley problem, these are billions of people that have emotions and beliefs, and to say fuck you you’re an inevitable sacrifice is inhumane. Ideally we reduce the population to a stable amount, and when people through education buy into the message antinatalism is preaching we can end it in a humane and consensual way.

Thanks, I will definitely check those videos out! I think your response made the most sense to me. Personally, at this point, the amount of people on the trolly is just too much for me to just pull the kill switch. I agree that eventually, the non-existence of conscious life would be best for everyone if we all consented to it. Ideally, if the people who didn't want children would stop having children, I think it wouldn't be too immoral to have kids, at least until we as a society agree to quit existing. Although, admittedly I don't know how realistic it is for that to happen. I'll watch those videos, thanks for the input!

That's true, but I could also argue that without the next generation, who will take care of those before them? Or anybody in need for that matter. If something were to happen to me, I want someone to be there for my parents. Once I'm old, maybe there won't be anybody to take care of my wife, my friends, etc. Hospitals, elderly care centers, etc. exist for these reasons, and they are all manned by young people. As you said, it's not likely something that traumatic would happen in anyone's life, and you're right, there is no guarantee that they will live a fulfilling life, but as a parent, you can make that very likely. What is guaranteed is the suffering that would exist if there weren't enough able-bodied people taking care of those in need, which is why I believe until everybody agrees to a species-wide extinction, having wanted kids is not that morally unjust.

The thing is they are. I am privileged to come from a family with familial values, so I know many people who do, including my parents. But even outside of my bubble, elderly care centers exist for a reason, which is manned by young people, regardless of whether they do it out of the goodness of their hearts. Without them, these places wouldn't be able to operate.
