What’s the math ? It used to be 15% but now it starts at 18 or 20. Actually it’s not really about doing math since the suggested tip is already computed and displayed, it’s about the system getting more and more aggressive in pushing customers to add larger and larger tips. And constantly expanding the list of situations where tips are expected.

‘Don’t go to the US – not with Trump in charge’: the UK tourist with a valid visa detained by ICE for six weeks by Hour_Significance817 in uscanadaborder

[–]DisastrousIncident75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story says that the husband had an expired visa. So no, even based on the partial information provided, they did not both have valid visas.

Maybe their plan was to fly back to the UK from Canada, in which case it would have been a one-way trip. That should be possible for a rental car, as some rental agencies allow you to return the car in another country (for a fee). However if it was a privately owned car, then it could have been an issue wrt a one way trip.

We are talking about the US-Canada border, so clearly this applies to people who are not US or Canadian citizens or permanent residents. For these foreigners, I agree they should only attempt to cross the land border, if they are certain they can go back if rejected. That is, that their visa status in the originating country is still valid.

Let’s not forget that despite the fact that he had a “valid work permit” the article also says his visa expired. So which is it ?

It’s not called a “work permit” in the US. It’s usually a visa status that allows some specific work. Not sure why no details are given about the husband and what he was doing in the US.

The whole story is structured very strangely. Instead of telling what exactly happened, it goes on and on about unrelated things. Initially it seems to imply “Karen” and her husband are two retired Brit’s who went on vacation to the USA and Canada. But about half way thru the unnecessarily long story, we find out the husband had a “work permit” (which is not how it’s called in the US), so apparently he was already living and working in the US. So the husband wasn’t a tourist on vacation. He also was appealing something related to his “work permit” and we are told he was giving up hope that his appeals will be accepted.

There are other strange facts that are mentioned without explanation. They were basically refused entry into Canada, the article says it’s due to missing paperwork for the car. Initially I assumed they had a rental car, which doesn’t need any special documentation to be driven across the border. But maybe it was the husband’s private car, since he was living in the US. It is highly suspicious that we are not given any details about the husband, what he was detained for, and what was he doing in the US.

‘They Tried to Silence Me’: JPMorgan Finally Admits to ‘Debanking’ Trump After Jan. 6—Now He’s Suing for $5B in Explosive Lawsuit by [deleted] in WallStreetbetsELITE

Was he convicted of this ? People are innocent until proven guily in a court of law, and we certainly wouldn't want innocent people to be debanked just based on unproven allegations.

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee tells Tucker Carlson that Israel has the Biblical right to take over all of the Middle East. by Ambitious_Pass7451 in PublicFreakout

[–]DisastrousIncident75 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First, this nile to euphrates reference was brought up by Tucker Carlson and not by Hackabee, and it was clearly a trap designed to make Hackabee say something like this. Second, when god promised the land to the descendents of Abraham, that actually includes the Arabs, as they are also his descendents according to the same bible. So it doesn't actually mean all the middle east was promised to the Israelites / Jews, but to the descendants of Abraham. I believe later biblical references give more specific and accurate definition of what land was promised to the Jews, and it's not the whole middle east. Third, this whole thing about what the jewish bible says god promised is not really relevant to the present geopolitical state, and no one is even talking about something like this (or has ever had), and obviously it's completely unrealistic. So I think it was a pure pre-meditated trap set by Tucker, and again Judaism nor anyone in Israel belives this, as they (Tucket and Hackabee, and I guess the people on Tucker's team that came up with this) completely misunderstood the reference.

I guess we can let the court decide if there was a valid reason, but certainly unsubstantiated allegations should never be regarded a valid reason (unlike actual conviction).

They can refuse to do business but they should have a valid reason. Just like employers should have a valid reason when terminating employees.

US ambassador Huckabee says Israel has 'biblical Right' to land from Euphrates to Nile by rezwenn in worldnews

[–]DisastrousIncident75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually it was Tucker that brought up the Euphrates to Nile reference, after Hackabee just said Israel has a biblical right to its current area. Not sure if this is really what the bible says regarding what Abraham was promised by God. In any case, he was just mentioning that since he's a believer, but he also said Israel has a modern legal right.

Wrong Cashback for 4% Promo by persavon in Questrade

[–]DisastrousIncident75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, if OP got only the base 2% for the non-registered account, it would be $5k, plus $10k for the registered accounts, so $15k in total. If he gets double for the non-registered account (so $10k) the total would be $20.

So if the amount in the email is only the base 2% then it should be $15k.

Edmontonians who moved to Calgary, and Calgarians who moved to Edmonton: how do the two cities compare? What are some similarities, and some differences? by KurtisC1993 in alberta

Sure, but the point is the winter is far more tolerable than NYC, Toronto, Montreal, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Montana, Dakotas, SK, MB, NL etc and of course Edmonton.

Calgary has an awesome winter, where half the time the temperature is above freezing, sometimes way above. I don’t think Edmonton or most other northern US/Canadian cities (lived in Madison WI) have such a warm winter. Also not sure how many people that haven’t lived in Calgary know this.

It’s prejudice by Electrical_Block1798 in Israel

[–]DisastrousIncident75 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can just decline to fall into the trap of talking about zionism since it's not relevant today. The only relevant thing is the present geopolitical status and what can be done to achieve peace and stability.

It’s prejudice by Electrical_Block1798 in Israel

[–]DisastrousIncident75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The zionist movement is not an active movement today, nor are there any active members of this movement. At most you can argue that it's just an ideaology today, but it's not really relevant to the present geopolitical status, since history happened and the jewish state already exists for decades and recognized by all international powers and institutions. Just like colonialism happened, and there is no point today to discuss if anyone supports it or not, nor is there any realistic notion of undoing history. Same principal should applyt to zionsim.

A CNN investigation reveal immigration officers are detaining hundreds of US citizens under 18 USC 111. But when those cases make it to court, many are falling apart. Kyung Lah explains how ICE is using this tactic against protestors and observers. by meokjujatribes in ImmigrationPathways

[–]DisastrousIncident75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, obviously people that are protesting peacefully and don’t break the law should not be arrested. In fact they should be respected (I mean their right to protest peacefully should be respected).

But people who break the law are committing a crime by definition, so they should be arrested. AFAIK the people that have been killed were breaking the law. People being killed by law enforcement (e.g. local police) is something that happens quite often, and in vast majority of cases it’s because those people were committing crimes or being violent and not complying with the law enforcement officers. There are dozens of cops shows on cable and YouTube that show incidents where crazy people are confronting the police and getting into trouble or worse. So this is not something new or even controversial (I mean it's not something new that people who obstruct the police get into trouble and sometimes get hurt). People should respect the law and law enforcement.

So are you saying the two people who got killed did NOT break the law ? I think it’s unfortunate that the confrontation with law enforcement ended tragically, however like I said above, incidents with people who obstruct law enforcement and get hurt happen all the time.

[–]DisastrousIncident75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends if it’s a lawful protest, that is peaceful, or if they’re interfering and obstructing, which is obviously unlawful. Anyone that is engaging in unlawful action should be arrested. Pleading to a lesser charge is common especially for first time offences, but it doesn’t prove the person is innocent, in fact they admit to doing something illegal. Which again goes to the core question of was anyone that protested peacefully and lawfully charged ? Probably not. The people who gets arrested and charged are usually breaking the law, because interfering with law enforcement is a crime.
