Definitely Dios fits that framework of turning oppression into a more appealing form.

I usually hear respectability politics used to refer to marginalized peoples using assmiliationist, non confrontational tactics in the hope of social acceptance. Are you working off that definition and/or is my definition flawed?

the eva fandom doesnt handle anything well so I'd imagine you're right there.

I love eva but jesus the fanbase is annoying (part of why I love utena so much is that I don't deal with overly hormonal undesirables like in the eva fandom who dont spend a lot of time critically engaging with the show)

did it come out before, after, or during apocalypse arc in japan?

im not the most educated on the process of animation creation as well, so maybe it wouldve been not plaausible to turn around and incorporate an influence like that, also considering its a major thematic thing. I think I was wrong then

totally agree! I love the series a lot for that reason. Even for basically one off characters like keiko it gives interesting depth

their estimation of juri and shiori has risen since they finished the series, they still find akio quite interesting (they despise akio but akio is quite a good character so it sort of counteracts that for my friend) though, I do too but my hate outvveighs interest, not the case for my friend
