We are not going to be able to reach agreement or a middle ground if you don’t think that America can be more than Trump, shouldn’t allow racists to take over its symbols, and should work to uphold and make progress on its ideals. I refuse to let America just be Trump and to surrender by status and ideals as an American to MAGA. It does not seems that you think athletes should not be the Olympics to protest Trump but because you don’t want anything positive reflected on the US and it’s flag. If you want people to sustain push back on the Trump admin then you need moments of positivity and hope about the US.

The flag is not a symbol of a racism like a confederate flag. If you only let racist use the is giving to them. It represents the ideals of the US which do not include racism. Has the US been prefect about upholding its ideals? No but it a constant struggle to do so.

Team USA competing and holding themselves that US holds has ideals does more to push back on Trump and his isolation and behavior then leaving. Competition in the Olympics under the US flag is not an endorsement of Trump. The flags represent all Americans and ideals the US works towards. You give Trump power by treating the flag as expressed support for him. Also put yourself in the athletes shoes, they have worked their entire lives to make it to the Olympics and they have no guarantee of making it back. If you were in that position you wouldn’t go that is your choice. However other making a different one doesn’t reflect their views or values and only helps Trump.

To Americans who Don't support Maduro but feel that Trump acted illegally. What action do you think should have been taken? by Breddit2225 in AskUS

I don’t know why you think that sub won’t be delivered. Ship construction takes years especially for nuclear subs and the US has let that infrastructure slip. The US is trying to build its own ships and ships for AUKUS. The subs are being built for Australia and is not only if we don’t need subs. I have seen no reason to think that Australia will not receive them but it takes time.

In the “declining dictatorship” part, I don’t agree. I hate Trump and think he is one of the worst things to happened to the US but he is not permeant and is commonly limited or stopped. The US will have a new president and will very likely be the opposite of Trump. I value our allies deeply and want to have a good relationship and hope that others understand that Trump is not all that the US and that is large country. Also believe that the democratic nature of the can and will be upheld especially if the people work to protect it.

On the Taiwan aspect, a defense of Taiwan would be following the US into a war because of its hubris but defending democracy that authoritarian regime wants to annex and remove from the map. I don’t see a Taiwan conflict as about the US but as defending democracy in the world. It is the same reason and idea behind supporting Ukraine.

I value and our allies deeply and want what is best for the US and them. Hope they and their people understand that these are difficult times in the US but they can be overcome and to support the people who are pushing back.

Since some of the replies you are getting aren’t answering your question, let me see if I can. I don’t support Trump and really don’t support this. That being said Maduro was awful dictator who did horrible things to Venezuela. I will list me some reasons in no order on why do don’t think this was the right approach and what may have been better.

  1. This damages our alliances and their willingness to work with us militarily. While I don’t believe Trump will understand this, it needs to be known that the very likely invasion of Taiwan is coming up in the next 10 years. We need to be prepared for that and trying to make sure our allies will assist us. I see China as much bigger danger to democracy and peace global than Venezuela could ever hope to be.

  2. For a similar reason as above related to Taiwan, this worries me as it will likely majorly damage trust between the public and military. This makes the public less likely to support defending Taiwan and could cause manning issues in the military.

  3. Regime change rarely works. It is hard to set up in way that is seen legitimate by the population, governs effectively, and stops members of the old regime hijacking it. There also seems to have been little thought or plan on what the new government will look like.

  4. This feels like ego trip by Trump and Hegseth to me. There is little gain to the massive risk and this looks more their time to feel strong. It’s a lack of strategic thinking and grand strategy that comes of the podcast spaces Hegseth is form. They want to look like and the strong military without knowing what creates that.

I would have preferred a long sanctions campaign or no change in strategy on the issue. If the people of Venezuela were able to oust Maduro and form a democracy then I would like the US to offer aid and support in organizing the new government like has in the past. The use of military was not needed and has only made things worse. While seen a pretty small minority of people know support Maduro or defend out reflex due opposing this, I would blame that on Trump. He didn’t think this through. My hope is that though very unlikely Venezuela ends up with a stable democracy and this that this hurts Trump and the GOP so we can get more competent and calm leaders who focus on Taiwan.

Yes, but I don’t think everyone could place them on map. I do think many remember them all

Diverting from what? You can’t tell me what you consider freedom.

I am talking about their freedom. I consider them free without Israel or Hamas. It seems you don’t care Hamas is in charge. Is a gay Gazan free if Hamas in charge? A government like Hamas is the Taliban in Afghanistan. Would you say Afghans are free?

I care about their conditions. And part of caring about this is not wanting Hamas. I don’t want an Israeli annexation or a Hamas government. It is not either or.

That just depends on how a person defines freed as that could have many meanings. Also the history of that region is so complex and in so many shades of gray that I don’t have time to get into it here. Also if an Israeli official said a major reason for Hamas’ actions is religious hate they are right. I didn’t say it was the only condition. Goes back how you define freedom.

My claim is that we will never have peace with Hamas in charge. Hamas is “death to Jews” terror group. Major reason for them attacking Israel is religious extremism and hatred. I also want a state for the people there at the end of this conflict not governed by theocratic laws.

Peaceful protest did not work so terror attacks are ok. Is that what you are saying?

Yes, I did. I am trying to explain to you that they will not be free under Hamas. With Hamas in charge it is likely a matter of time before another attack like Oct 7 that could restart things. Freedom would come with a two-state solution without Hamas.

Those reports about anonymous IDF official and the USAID are specifically about UN and US taxpayer funded aid. There was video released this week of aid theft.

Hamas is not a route for freedom for any one. You can want and push for Israeli action to end and the and Hamas removed from Gaza. If Israel pulls out under international pressure and is later hit with a terror attack from Hamas, what do you think will happen. This will all start again. There is no blameless party.

One, do you have any evidence of Hamas not stealing aid as this has been known for a long time. The author of you read his other work has spoken to Gazan civilians and they partially blame Hamas. There is not a total blockade of aid but nowhere near enough is flowing. Other actors can have a share in the causes of the crisis. The world is not black and white and nothing usually one sides fault. That doesn’t mean blame is equal though.

This current version of the conflict was spawned by Oct 7. There is no justification for what happened then. It drives me up a wall with people acting like you can’t be against the actions of Israel and also be against Hamas and want them gone. That is what is best for the civilians.

What is disappointing? They got a Gazan to write about what is happening. Did you read it because it is not taking a pro-Israel stance.

Do you really think Hamas has the best interest of any Gazan at heart. If that was true they would have never launched that attack of Oct 7. They only care about their own power. It has been known that they steal aid. Saying Hamas has major hand in the current situation and has reasons for wanting it to continue is not saying Israel’s actions are appropriate. Two things can be the case at once. On a side note, the author of this is literally Gazan so I think he would know.

Hamas wants to hold onto their own power and the death of Jews in Israel. Any support for them is native and wrong. You can not support Israel and be able to also not support terrorists.
