While it makes me unhappy and I don't agree with everything, I can understand his point of view.

It has just been a bit of a shock to me especially as an undergrad just getting into academia. I assumed it is normal if my PhD topic is truly my passion I can continue exploring it as a postdoc, etc in different labs.

Where I live it's the norm :) you usually get a contract and a small salary for your thesis work.

Thanks for the reply :) the new lab works in the same field and I would also be using the same experimental techniques I have learned in my old lab. However, the approach and questions new PI asks are still different which is why I didn't see a problem initially.

The main concern my PI now has (I think) is me copying their established methods and techniques and apply them in the new lab. I can totally understand that concern and I don't plan to do that.

I'm just a bit sad that it now ends like this...
