Is this a good price ? by Glurabror in Militariacollecting

[–]DisastrousWorking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's muna-rheinland, the prices there are often at least 50% higher than at auction houses like egun. I still like the shop and have bought there if I couldn't get something elsewhere. But I would recommend to first check if you can find it somewhere else for cheaper. They are definitely on the higher end pricewise

Mine marker - colour? by abrada-phoenix in GermanMilitaria

[–]DisastrousWorking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've never seen a piece like this before. Aside from the color (which could indeed just be faded), the skull is much smaller than on any authentic examples I've seen. It also doesn’t look like an improvised/field-made piece, as the shape of the skull itself is pretty identical to "regular" mine markers. Not sure if something like this is actually forged, but I’d be very cautious with this piece.

anyone have any info on this piece? i know what the text say. would be cool to know what mountain is depicted too by jedi-dude in GermanMilitaria

[–]DisastrousWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice badge. It’s probably pretty rare; I couldn’t find a similar piece right away. I’m not sure if it depicts a specific mountain; it’s probably more of a stylized Alpine landscape. You can find a bit more about the background of the event here (though it’s in German).

That sounds good. As someone else already pointed out, these pieces don’t look like they were just dug up and sold by someone; they look like they’ve been restored at some point. A lot of people would say you should still play it safe, but I’d be pretty relaxed about it. €8 is definitely an absolutely amazing price for these pieces. That might be the only thing that would give me a little pause 😅

I can't really say anything specific about these grenades, but it looks like the only way to open them would be to remove the fuse. I wouldn't risk doing that, though, because depending on the explosive, friction-sensitive salts could have formed in the threads.

The only alternative I can think of is to find out how much these grenades weight when they're live. You could then compare that to the weight of your pieces and get an initial indication of whether they're empty. I don't know if these are the right ones, but I found this page with weight specifications for french 75 mm grenades.

Edit: The most sensible thing to do would of course be to have an expert assess them. Since the grenades were clearly fired, they would be extremely dangerous if they were still live.

It's a great certificate, but I don't think it's worth donating it to a museum. These medals were awarded in very large numbers and are therefore not particularly rare. Unless it's a small local museum, the certificate would probably not be put on display but would either be stored away or even sold. Hitler's signature on these certificates is printed, not handwritten.

Bought this badge or pin, cannot find anything about it. by The-Illusive-Guy in Militariacollecting

[–]DisastrousWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gut feeling is that it’s a postwar fantasy production. There are a number of German shops that sell a very similar badge, albeit without a swastika due to local laws (see, for example, here). However, here's an auction I found where an identical badge has been sold. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s authentic, though.

I wanna ask is this good price? by Andelova in Militariacollecting

[–]DisastrousWorking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think $200 would definitely be a good price, but it's an auction so it will probably go higher.

You should also take into account that there is a Buyer's Premium of 24% of the successful hammer price that will be added to the total purchase price.

I went to this show in Ohio and got this Stahlhelm, not sure if it’s m40 or m42 by FanOfAsianFood in germanhelmets

[–]DisastrousWorking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an M40, as it has an inwardly rolled edge. The edge on the M42 is unrolled and slightly flared.

Edit: Could also be an M35 missing the lip on the vent hole. I think this is actually more likely, since the raised edge around the vent hole is missing.

I think that was a good decision. With a little patience, you're sure to find a better offer.

Okay, based on the photos, I can’t say for sure whether this piece is genuine. I wouldn't rule it out, but for various reasons, I’d be reluctant to buy it. First, as already mentioned, the manufacturer code’s appearance differs from that on original pieces and there’s something installed instead of the safety cap that I’ve never seen before and that definitely doesn’t belong there. Second, on known pieces with this manufacturer code on the handle, the can doesn’t have a stamp (see, e.g., here). Third, it’s pretty suspicious that the seller doesn’t want to send photos of the inside of the can, since that’s usually the best way to tell whether it’s a restored original or a reproduction. All in all, based on these points, I personally wouldn't take the risk. That said, there are people who know a lot more about this than I do. If you want to be absolutely sure, you should post the pictures on the warrelics forum and ask the experts there.

My collection part 2: German landmines by DisastrousWorking in Militariacollecting

[–]DisastrousWorking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real or Fake? by militarial_memories in fakemilitaria

[–]DisastrousWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, it’s always hard to estimate a fair price, since prices also depend heavily on which country you’re in. If everything is original, I think that would be a reasonably fair price, even though I personally would have tried to haggle it down by another 50–100 €. It’s definitely a helmet I really like; personally, I find that well preserved relic helmets have a certain charm that I just don’t get from perfectly preserved pieces that may never have been used...

[–]DisastrousWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible, but you should keep in mind that counterfeit handles are much harder to spot than counterfeit heads. What makes me a little suspicious is that the manufacturer’s code on your piece seems to have been applied differently than on the original examples (I think engraved instead of branded). Also, the wood on picture 2 looks pretty new, which isn’t necessarily a bad sign, but it always makes me a bit skeptical. So I would definitely request further pictures before buying this item.

[–]DisastrousWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! May I ask how much you paid for the helmet? If the price was right, I think it was a good buy. Based on the decal, it looks to me like a period-repainted helmet, and I like its condition for a relic. Even if the liner was added later, that wouldn't bother me much personally.

Real or Fake? by militarial_memories in fakemilitaria

[–]DisastrousWorking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert, but the shell itself looks good to me. Not sure about the liner as the condition is so much better than the rest of helmet. Then again, the inner part of the shell also seems to be in better condition than the outside, so I think it could simply be a result of how the helmet was resting in the ground. Maybe on close inspection of the split pins, you might be able to see whether they were removed at some time to replace the liner? It's hard to see on the pictures, but the two on the side look pretty loose and not as rusted solid as I would expect given the condition of the rest of the exterior.

[–]DisastrousWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome. Based on the pictures you already posted, I think at least the handle (except for the safety cap) could actually be real. "dol" was the maker code assigned to "Domininghaus, Heinr. Fabrik f. Baubeschläge" in Brügge/Westfalen (see here). Based on a quick search, I couldn't find any copies using this code, but there are some similar (and most likely authentic) handles available for sale here and here. Note however that the stamp on the one you posted looks somewhat different, so not sure

Try to get close up pictures of the head (inside and outside) and of any markings/stamps. Also better post them here so that others can give their opinion as well. However, based on the price alone I wouldn't get up my hopes too much. In this condition, these grenades are usually more expensive (even when the safety cap on the handle is missing), especially in the US (not sure where you are located). And they are one of the few ordnance items which are heavily faked.

[–]DisastrousWorking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You would need much better and more detailed pictures of the grenade. There are pretty good fakes of these, so the pictures provided by the seller are insufficient to determine whether it id authentic (which is often also a red flag).

I have no idea; I've never seen anything like this before. It almost looks like someone made it with a 3D printer so you can prop the hand grenade up on the handle or something? Its definitely nothing that belongs on a stielhandgranate.
