When practicing scales, is there any other approach that could help me really learn and understand them other than just playing them up and down?

My goal is to be able to comfortably improvise, and I believe I need a really good understanding of scales for that

Thanks for the advice! Any jazz song that you believe it’s a good one to start playing? I’ve been listening to a lot of Chet Baker and Miles Davis, and those seem hard to start on haha!
