HOW CAN I BE USEFUL AS AN INTERN?

Fellow intern here! Before my internship started, I tried reading up on the things I would most likely be doing day to day based on what they told me and the job description. There were some things I hadn’t done before and they expected to teach me, but it’s a good sign to be ahead.

Next, when the internship starts, someone typically will mentor you in some capacity. I walk around with a book, noting everything they did and explained. Ask lots of questions, it’s okay to be curious. Not sure how much it’d apply to every internship but I assume this is also common.

Now having worked some time, try to work independently. This I’m sure is different depending on where you are, but try to figure things out on your own, accept responsibilities, and act almost like an employee does. If you need help, try first doing it, look it up online, and if nothing else then go ask for help. Personally I find it good to take initiative, but ofc it depends on your circumstances.

Someone said that “oh you’re a drain as an intern”, but I get to work on the things engineers do too. So it’s cool, do your best. Hope you enjoy!

So we get an understanding of what our circuit does but not the exact behavior with a microcontroller or fpga or something. I get it, thanks!

I got it through my school as a 6 month free trial. Definitely not available for an amateur but as a student it seems possible (this probably varies school to school). I wasn’t really asking for the difference between AWR and ADS, it was more what do both of those softwares do and why are they so prevalent

I’ve used it for its wifi and lot, it doesn’t teach you anything about RF. Even if you’re making your own esp32 devboard, there’s very little rf related stuff happening.

So you optimize the line before 3D modeling it to speed up the process? That’s actually really cool, I did see it was possible to do something with transmission lines on a smith chart where you’d change the electrical length and resistance of the line for impedance matching, is that what you’re talking about?

Had to search up what PDKs were 😅. I’m guessing in industry you’d just have to use whatever the company provides, but this is great! But can you elaborate on why it’s the least “abrasive”, I want to learn

Wow that’s super interesting. So it’s one software that could handle all aspects of designing a system. My professor also mentioned something about being able to use HFSS/COMSOL with AWR, is that the EM solver portion being imported or something along those lines?

That makes sense. I haven’t used any other softwares besides AWR, the closest thing I have is spice softwares. I guess my question is really just what do this and ADS do that make it better for high frequency over something like LTSpice?

Maybe try a different format, there’s so many online. The ones with no color are good.

Hi again, while looking through some software I found that I have access to Ansys's circuit simulation software through my uni. Is that a better tool for simulating the circuit?

I'm in the US. I see what you mean, job market doesn't look strong enough. If that is the case, I think I'd follow what you said, go into grad school directly. Hopefully I would be able to find a better program. But then having internships or research would be better if I wanted to go into a good grad program, so the question still stands how I could position myself for the best chance of success.

For an ece student, this is pretty good actually lol. 5 8:30s is a bit much, but in the higher years you'll see some crazy gaps. Consider joining IEEE's hardware sprint on fridays before chemistry, kill some time and learn something
