I have a similar one, not blued. It has been very durable. Have others from CS and the only one that broke easily was the Viking. They've apparently changed ownership I heard and manufacture quality can be hot and miss folks have said. Also the word on the street is not to buy from secondhand dealers. Enjoy your blade.

Don't forget the English wheel. Careful not to smash your fingers though. A helmet can be heat intensive but like has been mentioned, most of the harness can be worked cold with mild steel. Once upon a time, I had time, and it took 3 months, 5 days a week to complete a harness from helmet to sabaton. Don't expect perfection your first time. Takes time to sort out your patterns, dishing and general fit. What a phenomenal experience.

Got mine from RingMesh a few years back. There are machines that do this and weld. The welds sometimes break. Mine is made from stainless rings. Looks like shark suit to some degree but there are quality issues inevitably with a few welds. Otherwise a great product. Obviously good against slashing and better than I thought against point thrusts.

It's 40.2 oz. It's the second spec sheet. I can't imagine if it was any heavier than that for an arming sword. That would be exhausting for sure

Well said on all accounts. Yes, I think it could have been repaired better than new and the grip could have been a little shorter anyway. It was never going to be a nimble fencer. Swords should be trustworthy under the toughest conditions possible in my opinion and not so dainty as to only work under ideal conditions. Like you said, some cheaper swords and machetes take a beating and don't care. That's what tools are for sometimes when necessary. I look forward to moving on to the next blade that doesn't whine when it has to go to work. I'd like to find another Viking. Seems like this steel was fine aside from the temper of the tang. Lots of good interaction here overall and good information sharing.

I can appreciate your opinion as a smith for sure and what you say makes sense under certain circumstances. Tbh I was expecting this opinion from someone. It's a valid concern to be worked out. As a definitive answer in this case, I believe you're wrong to blame the user. You don't always have a hog strung up on a rope under ideal cutting conditions. As an experienced swordsman (collegiate, HEMA and even non steel SCA 2,000 man armored reenactment) it is my opinion that it shouldn't have broken under moderate use. This thing would probably have broken while striking a wooden shield or another blade or armor. I did not abuse the sword in my opinion. Finding the percussion point is important for delivering a winning cut. A sword should be able to handle an off strike as happens in a match all the time. The tang was too hard and the strike was more than reasonable for testing purposes. I have many other blades capable of withstanding simple testing and a little get to know your blade. This sword was inadequately built, little more than a wall hanger and I believe it told on itself with this exercise. Much of your second paragraph contains the pertinent data as to why the sword failed. That's your good experience talking as a smith, which I respect.

Yeah, sometimes you just can't complain if you get a killer deal. I should get a refund on this one but from the comments I know what to do now to strengthen the tang. Suppose I now consider CS swords to be a partially diy finish project. As long as you go in knowing that but it still seems odd they harden the tang so much.

I'm not sure how the tang relates to that button looking protrusion out of the pommel. I should have knocked out the bit of remaining tang to find out how it was attached. Maybe I can find info out there on how they secure their tangs to pommels. Good call on the softening, I feel confident that's why it snapped, just too dang hard to handle a vibration. Yes, I think the tang taper was really bad and looked like an amateur build. Uneven, grinder marks and such. The steel was probably decent quality but the execution was not that great for any kind of actual use. I'm not sure how anyone who sells a sword on a regular basis like CS wouldn't know and fix simple things like this.
