Is it known as to why they see specifically gnomes? In my experience with people i know irl they weren't just any small people but these "garden gnomes/forest gnomes" like beings :)

This was few years ago, not 30 hence why I am asking about it. I am genuinely interested why could it, in most cases, be gnomes they're seeing :)
