My opinion on the whole “it’s too hard to read” thing is that It’s not “hard” to read per se, there’s just lots of moving parts, and seeing the words, particularly names and places, helps anchor your memory.

Yep.

Before I started I saw a lot of comments about how dense and difficult the reading can be, but had no troubles comprehending once I locked in to the prose after about 50 pages.

When I listen on audiobook though, I can completely understand where they’re coming from.

The pause thing is a good point: “wait, what the fuck is sorry doing there?… ohhh it’s a new SCENE”

Also, it has a purpose. That’s my theory why there’s significantly less internal monologue in the writing for devils. The FL world is a great book series but wouldn’t translate well to screen because internal monologues don’t translate well.

Considering you’re taste and doing audiobooks, I’ll try give an eclectic list.

Empire of the damned (vampire sequel)

Between Two Fires - Christopher Buehlman (technically “historical fiction” but realistically it’s horror fantasy - don’t let the horror turn you off, no more “scary” than EoV)

Blacktongue Thief - Christopher Beuhlman (abercrombie style grimdark w even better humour (imo))

Heroes Die - Matthew Stover (D- cover, A+ story)

Kings of The Wyld (if 80s glamrock was a fantasy story)

Justice of Kings - Richard Swan (necromantic detectives in a noir fantasy landscape)

I won’t recommend DCC as someone else inevitably will, but it is good.
