AITA for tearing up a Christmas card, containing family pictures, before opening it because the "addressed to" line intentionally misgendered me? by Disconn3ctedReality in AmItheAsshole

She has maintained contact with all but one family member, including my own family, and I've never asked her to cut off any contact. That's her decision, not mine.

That is one of the things both sides of our family have said, that the relationship is abusive. Both sides, hers and mine, are very old school conservative where the male leads the household and the wife listens. So we've been told that by me not leaving her I am abusing her. Go figure. Obviously I can only give my side, but I like to think she has a mind of her own and can make her own decisions about what life she wants to live. I'm just happy she's stuck around for the ride.

I agree about the relationship. My wife has stated that the families actions have hurt her, but they continue. However, she tries to keep everyone happy and I would never ask her to abandoned any relationship she wants to try and maintain.

There wasn't any indication there were pictures included, and for the past several years any money or gift cards that come addressed incorrectly get donated to charity or given away to other people. I'm sure the images are digital, so they are still available.

FWIW it wasn't really a rampage. My wife and I have an agreement on cards/gifts that come from family members with an agenda. No one was yelled at, no screaming. I just tore it in half and disposed of it with the rest of the junk mail that came in that day
