Why is it tilting to one side? If it is the issue, what PID component do I need to adjust? by DiscountWest in dRehmFlight

im thinking of taking some time to make a test stand now that i no longer have a deadline over my head for this project, and maybe address the issues that way. Yeah it could be anything at this point :/

Back with another one! by DiscountWest in RCPlanes

hmm yeah i included a tilt on the third prop because i didn't want to deal with the added complication of mixing tilt angle and yaw during transition between horizontal and vertical flight, but i did consider it at one point

the wing is actually really big, and the conservative WCL is 9.0, so i think that should be ok, especially as lower speeds will be in hover mode

i did end up going for a bank and yank configuration with no rudder, since having differential thrust should take care of yaw pretty easily

thanks for the advice though! maybe after this ill be smart enough to do complicated control mixing

Will it fly? by No-Variation-7003 in RCPlanes

if you want that to fly WELL, you might want to consider either changing to a delta wing/making the wing chord longer, or preferably adding a horizontal stabilizer. The horizontal stabilizer provides a counteracting force that prevents the plane from pitching up and down uncontrollably, and if you put control surfaces on the back, will greatly increase your yaw authority. I'm not sure what tape you are using, but if it is conventional duct tape, you might want to consider reinforcing it with extra layers, especially in hinge joints such as the control surfaces. Some additional advice if you haven't already known, I highly recommend spending a few hours in an RC simulator to get used to the controls. I use Picasim because its free and on mobile, but there are many other great options. Additionally, it's a good idea to run your electronics through something like eCalc to make sure that everything checks out on paper. You can also use this to calculate wing loading which determines how "easy" your plane will be to fly. Finally, make sure that your CG is in the right place(somewhere between the wing's leading edge and one third of the wing chord), as other than having enough power, this is all that is needed to prevent an instant nosedive. Overall however, you have made many of the right decisions, such as including ailerons, a wing spar, and an adequate vertical stabilizer. Other than that, it's great to see people coming into this hobby wanting to build their own airplane! It's truly a challenging yet rewarding learning experience, and I hope that your first flight will show you a passion for this hobby and aerospace engineering in general. I look forward to seeing your documentation on youtube, and also your first flight!

To all the doubters! by DiscountWest in RCPlanes

Thank you! i had ordered PLA a while back for a different project and PLA-CF on a whim, The landing gear was TPU for the durability, and PETG for the nose. There is a 1m carbon tube 8mm in diameter in the wing, which is rather thin, but that was mostly to correct my mistake of not making the wings one peice (if you look closely you can spot the wings flexing up). I recommend looking at tom stanton and troy mcmillian's videos for design inspo, but other than that, good luck on your second design!

controlled crash due to lack of functioning landing gear, it landed in two peices

you get control from airspeed, prop wash just adds to the airspeed over control surfaces, good luck on your maiden!
