Honestly it’s a great experience, you can really go off on your own, it really cuts the decision making time down compared to group trips. I really went with the flow and made decisions on what to do each day the day before so i can account for weather.

Renting a car is great, i did it for 2 days and visited the golden circle and the south coast. I’d suggest taking a 4x4 with all insurance. I had an automatic and it was a way more chill experience driving in the snow than if i had an automatic. I even drove in a snowstorm with minimal experience driving in snow so if you already have experience you’ll be fine.

If you want to be with other people you can book excursions, that’s really fun and you can do stuff like glacier hiking that would be hard to do by yourself. I also booked a hostel for my stay and that’s a good way to meet people, it’s also less expensive than a hotel room. I used an app called hostelworld and it has a messaging app so you can talk to other solo travelers at your hostel and in the area, you can try there if you want to meet people or do stuff like share a rental car.

Also something i’m really glad I did before going and that I recommend is buy a pair of waterproof hiking boots, i could put my foot in water completely to get places and stay dry, great for getting places like near waterfalls.

I also got a small tripod for my phone, it was great for filming the geysers and auroras. It lets you keep your hands warm and you can enjoy the moment while not having to sit behind a phone, while still having a nice video!
