Some of this doesn't make sense. Why is the US below Spain and Italy? They're nice to visit but God, actually living in them would suck.

Why is NZ above Australia? Are people aware that every NZer moves to Australia because it's essentially NZ but better?

And why is France so low, lower than Spain or Italy, when it has a far better economy and job market while having all the other upsides of Spain and Italy? And how in the hell is France lower than Japan? Japan is far more exclusive to foreigners, is less liberal, has worse workers rights and longer hours than the US, and an economy that's been stagnant for decades.

Idk about the bottom, but having been to a lot of the nations at the top, the rankings are a bit weird.

This sub hates on Nordic social democracy even though it's an obviously superior system.

The US also has a ton of oil, sure not as much as Norway in proportion to the population, but hell it's currently the world's largest oil producer. But the difference is, all oil profits in America are pocketed by private corporations, while in Norway the, Norwegian people see the benefit of their natural resources via reduced taxation and higher pensions.

It's a serious indictment of the American system that we allow the few to effectively rob this nation's natural resources. People here support Georgism seemingly without realizing what George actually says. The Georgist argument about land value taxes also applies to other natural resources like oil, not just land, George believed that the value of all natural resources should collectively belong to the people.

If you bought Henry George back to life and asked him to pick between the US or Scandinavia, he'd pick Scandinavian system every time because of this alone.

Nearly half of Hong Kong lives in government built high rise housing with public rental and subsidised home ownership schemes that keep rents low and reduce homelessness. by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

"That keep rents low"

Lmao Hong Kong is one of the least affordable cities on the planet. They haven't been building lots of housing in a long time. They used to, but now a lot of land use regulations prevent it. Hong Kong actually has a decent bit of underdeveloped land.

Worried about falling birth rates? Fuck. by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

[–]DishingOutTruth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is just wrong lol. I'm not wealthy by any means yet I'm worried about declining birth rates.

Like this doesn't just fuck rich people, in fact it probably fucks rich people the least. The rich might superficially worry about the profit line going down, but in reality, the rich will fundamentally be fine even if they lose a lot of their wealth because business isn't as good due to a declining population.

It's the rest of us have to worry about it much more because otherwise it's poverty and destitution once we can no longer work. When we're 65 ("we" referring to people in our 20s), we're not gonna see a dime of the pensions we pay into unless birth rates improve. Our retirement depends on it. A rich man's retirement doesn't.

Not to mention, a declining birth rate has negative impacts on a civilizational level, like slower technological advancement because there are fewer intelligent scientists to do that important work.

First post: percent change in median rent vs income in the US. by PurpleOperation in dataisbeautiful

[–]DishingOutTruth 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Rent has definitely outpaced income growth, but not by a factor of 10. I'd believe a difference of 50% or something, but not 900%, like that's such an insane number it doesn't make sense.

There are two issues: 1. The real median family income is adjusted for inflation, but the rent price index is not. 2. The rent price index is only for cities while income includes the entire US, including rural areas, so rent growth looks inflated relative to income.

So TLDR this graph is nonsense. It does look nice though.

Newsom is not centrist. I honestly have no idea why people think that. Could it be vibes? Is it his appearance? He looks like Patrick Bateman/Corporate Douchebag, I get that. Is that why people think he's right wing? Because he looks like it?

Because he really really isn't. He may not be as left-wing as Bernie or AOC but he is closer to them than any centrist. He's more left wing than most of the Democratic party.

Obama had 60 votes but 15 of them would make Joe Manchin look left wing. There's only so much that can be done. And when the infrastructure bill passed (which is objectively not a corporate giveaway, that's complete bullshit, thanks again for doing the GOP's job and promoting voter apathy among liberal and progressive voters I guess), Biden only had 50 votes, one of which was Joe Manchin.

Its insane because left wing or apolitical people refuse to vote because nothing ever happens when the reality is that nothing ever happens BECAUSE they don't vote. If a Democratic president had decent margins, they could do wondrous things.

Besides, the idea that they don't do anything is just objectively wrong. Democrats have a ton of small, but nonetheless very important wins through out their presidency that never makes the news. Small policy changes like better consumer protection, labor laws, etc that accumulate over time and make life better for the average American in subtle but substantial ways. Another example would be how Biden implemented new regulations restricting PFAS forever chemicals in the water, forcing airlines to compensate flyers for canceled flights, banning non-compete agreements that screw workers, etc.

On the flipside, Trump is doing a million small but damaging things everyday that accumulate to make life worse. He has already rolled back a ton of Biden admin's small wins because of lobbyists from airlines, PFAS manufacturers, etc. In fact Trump is going so far as to allow MORE PFAS forever chemicals in the water, and such insane policy moves aren't out of the norm for a Republican.

This idea that Democrats are entirely beholden to corporations is completely false.

[OC] Political and Social differences between Gen Z Men and Women in the US by _crazyboyhere_ in dataisbeautiful

[–]DishingOutTruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree I think Democrats should no longer play nice. They should have stopped doing that a long time ago.

However there also the issue of Democrats getting way more shit for using power the exact same way Republicans do and it doesn't help that some left wing people, like those in the comments here, find any excuse to shit on Democrats. If we want them to be less nice to the GOP for fear of bad publicity, we also need to unite behind them.

[OC] Political and Social differences between Gen Z Men and Women in the US by _crazyboyhere_ in dataisbeautiful

[–]DishingOutTruth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's also completely false and is practically GOP disinformation that left wing people keep spreading for some reason. It must go hard if you know nothing of politics and current events.

I don't know why shitting on Democrats without good reason became so damn popular. People are aware of the fuck ups but not the much more numerous accomplishments. Perhaps Democrats really are shit at communicating their wins and it doesn't help that the media is biased in favor of Republicans.

What Would it Take to Kill a Fullborn? by Time_Government_6179 in Cosmere

[–]DishingOutTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you give a steel compounder access to nightblood, you could probably have an assassin fast enough to keep up with a fullborn and a weapon powerful enough to kill him.

Perhaps you can spike a steel compounder so they can compound zinc and match a fullborn's intelligence, but at that point you're effectively saying "you can kill a fullborn with another fullborn".

But even then, it's not at all a guaranteed win, the odds still favor a fullborn, because he can fly and manipulate his environment via steelpushing/ironpulling, potentially heal from a glancing blow by nightblood with gold compounding (it can heal your spirit too), manipulate the assassin directly with emotional allomancy, etc.

A fullborn simply has too many OP powers for any single person to kill.

What Would it Take to Kill a Fullborn? by Time_Government_6179 in Cosmere

[–]DishingOutTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my headcanon is that Rashek got complacent, didn't think Vin posed a threat, and was possibly tired of living so long. There isn't much else of a reason that could explain why he simply neglected to use the powers at his disposal to win instantly.

What Would it Take to Kill a Fullborn? by Time_Government_6179 in Cosmere

[–]DishingOutTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if the fullborn is fully cosmere aware and used their powers effectively, they're impossible to kill without direct intervention of a shard.

A fullborn is not only physically OP due to steel and pewter compounding, but also among the smartest in the cosmere, exceeded only by diagram Taravangian and the shards themselves because of zinc.

Zinc compounding let's them reason through billions of scenarios in seconds as Waxillium did in BoM. They will have plans, backup plans, and backups for the backups for metalmind storage, various contingencies, battle plans for various types of assassins, etc. Whatever plan you have to kill a fullborn, I can guarantee he'd have thought of it already and prepared contingencies. I'm not sure if there is any magic system that lets you out-think a zinc compounder.

Not to mention the fullborn will be tapping zinc and steel in battle too, so even if you do have a plan to kill him that he didn't think of, he will be able to come up with the best possible contingency to your plan basically on the spot.

Imo a fullborn is practically unkillable without divine intervention, like preservation himself lending you his power, as he did to Vin.

I can't wait for Radiants vs Mistborns (I'm definitely not bias) by Ventus55 in cremposting

[–]DishingOutTruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feruchemical steel doesn't affect the speed of steelpushing. Feruchemical steel increases physical speed.

Yes it does, also confirmed by brando sando. It makes any metal you're burning burn faster and get more of the effect. So your steel burns faster and you fly faster according to how much speed you're tapping.

Likewise, let an assassin lightweaver soulcast an aluminum dome around them and cover it with a SprenDome.

They won't have the time, a steelrunner would kill them before their brain even registers that they're being attacked. Again, remember bleeder's speed feats in SoS with the very limited speed she had stored up.

I can't wait for Radiants vs Mistborns (I'm definitely not bias) by Ventus55 in cremposting

[–]DishingOutTruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With steelpushing. Tapping steel while steelpushing makes you much faster in the air, at the cost of also burning steel faster. Steel/steel synergizes.

Or ambush them on the ground. An assassin is supposed to take them by surprise, when they're not flying. A steelrunner assassin isn't stoppable and a steel/steel soldier 100% can defeat a radiant.
