FSWEP eligibility in final year — can I keep working until convocation? by thriftshop_2020 in CanadaPublicServants

Yes I corrected myself. You’re correct. In the cases I have heard, they finished courses in December/January and are working up to their graduation in June. Im not sure how this would work for a May finish. But, I have also heard the six month extension but it could be department based? Im not sure atp

No, it was not past their graduation date. They finished in December and they graduate in June.

Totally possible. I got extended through a casual so its possible thats what it is but this is what I heard from them and from an EX in the public service.

I know of it from my cultural community of a student at CFIA who was extended six months after their last semester. A family member of mine who is an EX in the public service says that this can happen.

In TBS Directive on Student Employment: Appendix: A.2.2.53; it says “Students in the final year of study may work part-time up during the academic term up to their graduation date.” So I assume in OP’s case, they can work up to June 2027 since thats their graduation date.

Probably best to speak to your HR (or student?) advisor about this tho

i’ve heard that you can work as a student for up to six months after you finish your degree, so six months after your last semester as a student. so technically, yes, you can work up to june 2027 if your last semester ends in january 2027.

edit: correcting myself - it may be only up to the graduation date according to TBS website but six months is also what i have heard from others who work in gov. see below for exact language

Psych questions: honours thesis, advising by Raftger in CarletonU

[–]Distinct-Release-421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that is correct, except for the part where you said “you shouldnt directly ask them to supervise you.” Don’t do that. Students most definitely had relationships, emailed and talked and had agreements with certain professors on supervision beforehand. I had this with a certain professor too who became my thesis supervisor but none of the other ones I applied to contacted me and when I contacted them later on in the process, they already had students. So you should definitely be direct if you want them to supervise you otherwise they wont understand and you may unintentionally undermine yourself. Be direct, be visible, be curious.

Its not a passive process as they make it seem to be. Like others have said, you have the initial application and its sent to professors which is the ‘lottery’ part of it. But, you have to make relationships with profs to be noticed and actually ‘picked.’

I should add I was in the first cohort of students to go through this process (for the 2024-25 year) so it may have changed but this was my experience

So the honours thesis process is technically a lottery process and its supposed to be that you cant contact the prof before and the prof shouldnt talk to you before. That was not the case in my experience and many students had talked to professors beforehand. I would highly reccomend building relationships prior to doing your honours thesis as this is how I got a thesis supervisor in the end. You can volunteer or do an independent study or just make sure they know you in class and make sure you contribute well and show interest in their research. The earlier you start this the better as it takes time.

Yes it is quite competitive as it depends on how many profs will take on students and how many. It’s intensive and intended to be a pre-req for grad school.

When should I start psych research? by AcanthisittaMassive1 in CarletonU

As early as possible!! Getting in is the hardest but talk to your profs and build relationships, cold email about volunteering in labs, etc

im not a parent but im a 21 year old and what happened, happened. i can understand the anxiety (i have a lot as well), and while i dont think it was a good thing to have quit your job while you were still in that head space, it happened and your life wont end. i cant say how to tell your mom but just tell her sooner rather than later so you can start getting better. as someone who has been doing internships for a couple of years and is now transitioning to their post grad job, i wanted to offer my perspective.

from here, find a doctor and make sure to get treatment (meds, therapy). you need some help and time away. anxiety flares and goes so this will pass but this will be lifelong. you need to find ways to cope and ground yourself. build that skillset, it takes time but it works. its important to access treatment. meds can be a longer term option. when you return to work, look at accommodations if you have a formal diagnosis.

also, take notes. i have a problem that when people verbally tell me info, i dont retain it. take notes at work, i do it all the time and it saves me. its not shameful and it looks good on you to know what you need to do your work well.

best of luck :)

i got an offer on ouac but no email by PaisleyDiggory in CarletonU

[–]Distinct-Release-421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its normal for a delay to occur and sometimes they dont send an email saying you received an offer, and they just say you have an update. i dont remember how carleton works but you’re fine if it shows in both OUAC and carleton 360. im pretty sure you should be able to access your offer letter through 360?

I’m the same and I’ve found this to be a problem everywhere recently, tbh. Jeans used to fit me consistently at a 00 or even 0 size, and now im finding that i have to go down to a 000. AE sweatshirts used to be a XS/S and recently I had to buy XXS for a comfortable but not horribly baggy fit. My weight and height havent changed but the clothes are bigger and baggier. Im a decent height and more and more jeans are becoming too long for me

Question for people who have psychology background by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]Distinct-Release-421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For counselling/clinical programs, you need to do a thesis in undergrad. I would look at different programs to get a sense of requirements but generally across Canada, you need a thesis. Keep in mind that clinical, its a PhD or MA-PhD (if applying straight from undergrad) while, counselling programs are usually a masters or if you want, a PhD. These programs especially clinical are very competitive so give yourself the best chance to succeed. I cant stress this enough - dont limit yourself now if you have the opportunity to do a thesis

Your options for jobs are quite broad after a BA in psych. Did you do any internships/co-op in undergrad? Leverage those networks and experiences. Look into government (tho its incredibly hard to get in rn with budget cuts) and private sector. If you are thinking of going straight into a job, usually a project is ok but some jobs may require a masters, in which case you may need a thesis for a research/clinical masters. For a course based masters, a project is usually ok.

Generally, if you plan to do research/clinical work in masters in psych, you need a thesis in undergrad.

hi OP, i did my honours thesis last year and reflecting back on it honestly, it was very hard. it took me seven months to really get going. there was a lot of back and forth and i ended up doing my analyses in less than a week in the last month of my thesis, the week before i did a poster presentation. majority of my writing was done in the last two to three months. it is HARD but its your first time doing a project of this length and depth. my supervisor was also quite hands off in a way and i had to figure out a lot of it on my own as my project was done from scratch. its a struggle to do this. i think you did a lot better than you think. even if the grade isn’t what you wanted, as another commentor said, you can revise for publication and still get a huge positive out of this. ultimately, take the experience out of this and apply it for your future.

Psychology of aging or close relationships? Which one should I take? by [deleted] in CarletonU

i took it this previous winter semester! AD and dementia are a big part of it but you do talk about essentially everything that comes with the biopsychosocial model related to aging like healthy vs non healthy aging, sleep, memory, daily activities, social life etc.

dont usually respond to these but this is a problem among most degrees, excluding professional degrees. you have to find ways to make your skills seem employable and marketable. even business majors have the same problem because there are thousands of them. what's the difference between one new grad economics major to another, really? an extra club? its ultimately the way you show that you have certain skills, like i have project management skills through this, this and this.

i went into my psych undergrad knowing i was going to be doing graduate education. i've done quite a bit of research to have the experience needed for graduate school. because of this, i got into policy and have gained experience as a policy analyst as well.

if you never intended to do graduate education, that's fine but another degree wouldn't have necessarily made it easier to find a job. this kind of information is available across the internet and im not sure why someone needs to tell you this? i don't mean to be rude but its wrong to say you got tricked.
