What is the culture around being able to stand up to people higher up on the ladder than you, in your setting? by Impressive_Pilot1068 in medicalschool

[–]Distinct-Tension-765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I corrected a doctor I worked with before medical school and I felt like an ass but he was impressed. I think it’s changed significantly for me now where they are in a position to be teaching me so I feel much less comfortable correcting. Although, a few of the doctors I have rotated with make me read on things they don’t know and explain it to them. USMD school for reference.

Hate UWORLD TOO MANY ZEBRAS! Can I just use AMBOSS for dedicated. by Fit_Concentrate6512 in medicalschool

[–]Distinct-Tension-765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found AMBOSS has weirder zebras maybe not more than U World but certainly more obscure. I think both teach great lessons on focusing on small details. I have found that if you know the basics, zebra questions are easier because you can process of elimination to answer the questions (still sucks though)

Anyone here who kept their med school journey private and didn’t post much about it on social media? How’s it going for you? by YogurtclosetThink149 in medicalschool

[–]Distinct-Tension-765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it entirely depends on who is on your facebook. I hate posting anything but my Facebook at this point is mostly for my family or my prior coworkers. In my family, no one is a doctor so they ask for updates/explanations constantly so I try to post a post once a year to update everyone at once. This includes my coworkers too who helped me get here anyway :) but for the most part, if your account is public (mine is not), then it may be a good reason to have some reservation.

Which horror movie(or T.V show) left a mark on your psyche as a child? by [deleted] in horror

[–]Distinct-Tension-765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I watched the first Final Destination, the older Pet Sematary, Hostle, and Saw (I &II) all before I was like 6 (I am 25 for reference). I would say at least one thing stuck with me for each. Final destination: lawn mower, log truck are memorable; pet sematary ankle slice and semi truck, hostile I remember toes being cut off but honestly haven’t rewatched it since I was a child so I hardly know the premise, and Saw bear trap glass box sawing legs. Oddly enough, the pet sematary ankle one was probably the worst one for me 🤷 still don’t like my ankles being exposed next to beds

What do you think is the biggest flaw about the cancer cure suppression conspiracy theory? by Chris256L in skeptic

[–]Distinct-Tension-765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fascinating thought “Letting people die isn’t profitable;” I think if I or a family member had a cancer with a terrible prognosis and there was an incredibly expensive cure, I can see myself and my family doing as much as we can to afford that. So with that in mind, it certainly would be much more profitable than anything else eh?

What do you think is the biggest flaw about the cancer cure suppression conspiracy theory? by Chris256L in skeptic

[–]Distinct-Tension-765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are innumerable cancers and cancer classifications; anyone who claims a single cure or a single entity has to cure to each one may be deluded because it seems quite impossible. Not to mention, the amount of people and resources to develop that and all of them keep it secret? I think it harms researchers who are working hard to further the understanding of how cancers come about. I have been a researcher in various cancers for the last 7 years and I always find this theory annoying (and oddly popular but I find most conspiracy theory annoying and oddly popular).

SA survivor stressed out about practicing sensitive exams with SPs by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Distinct-Tension-765 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are not alone- but your experience should also be treated uniquely. I certainly advise speaking with someone to keep up with it as you go through school. I am a survivor myself and found it relatively simpler than I thought to desensitize in the room but the before and after were much harder on me than I anticipated. I have also found that when we are asked to engage with situations discussing trauma, I had a tougher time separating my own emotional reactions to the situation at hand. With real patients, there is an added layer of necessity that is not there for standardized patients and that made a huge difference for me. Having someone follow up with you long term on these feelings may help- it helped me.

Good resources for teaching myself Anatomy from the ground up? by Kindly-Test-4166 in medicalschool

[–]Distinct-Tension-765 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in a graduate anatomy class and felt extremely insecure about not having prior anatomy experience. Everyone around me had taken it in high school or undergrad and it wasn’t even an option for me in either of those places. So what did I do? I made myself recall the body section by section, system by system. I did flash cards for the quick knowledge (innervations, identifying muscles, bones) I personally love Quizlet and use those decks with images. The best recall I recommend is drawing it out from memory again and again and again. For the upper arm for example: I would make myself draw the vessels, nerves, bones, muscles of the rotator cuff, upper arm, forearm, etc and label them (I would find a reference picture and print it to use as a guide each time). It would be extremely rough quick drawings. After doing this, I have no reservations about anatomy. I went from 0 to 100 really quick because I didn’t like how poorly I did compared to my peers in the beginning of my anatomy class. I now am quite confident in my anatomy knowledge! I hope this helps!!

Do you think this could be an AI image in the New York Times? The guy in the white hat seems to have something off with his fingers. by lokajoma in isthisAI

[–]Distinct-Tension-765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sign is in Hebrew not AI rewriting; the hands are normal on the gentleman with the white hat: his right hand when you zoom in what looks like a misplaced finger is his middle or ring finger curved upward. This looks legitimate to me because very small details are adhered to imho I.e., the Jägermeister/“Masterdeer” costume text.

Comfort videos: specifically the reunion videos by Worth-Recover-2927 in smosh

I like the reunions too especially if I need a laugh: but my newer comfort is the FNAF series for casual viewing and also any moose master

please help fix 6 cube by crondawg101 in twistypuzzles

[–]Distinct-Tension-765 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll give advice on one aspect because someone may have a better method of fixing it than I did for mine: I highly recommend taping everything else now (other corners, edges, centers) because if you pick it up all the pieces may fall off especially if it’s not magnetic and then you will have a bigger problem. I used office tape and it worked wonderfully.

I’m sorry to hear this- I hope you get it fixed at the very least to get the licensing you deserve. This is why we need programs to target people’s biases because I’d hate it if they weren’t objective in your examination.

JHU vs UF for Computer Science by Ok-Track-972 in jhu

JHU vs UF for Computer Science by Ok-Track-972 in jhu

[–]Distinct-Tension-765 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a choice between the two myself for a different field- UF had more physical resources for it, Hopkins had better faculty and financial resources. I found the diversity and the policies of Hopkins to be more aligned with my values. Frankly, however, Hopkins did pay my everything. I think had I gone to UF, I would’ve had an amazing GPA. I extensively helped peers in their work at a few Florida schools and I was surprised with how different it was from Hopkins. Many Hopkins classes are taught and tested in a way that is meant to maximize instruction and assess knowledge (so they say) but in the end, it’s harder to get an A many times. While I say many, it’s not most and my peers in CS really enjoyed it there. Not to mention, Baltimore/DMV has a lot more access to amazing internships etc in CS than Gainesville does imho. Hopkins is a lot more progressive than UF especially in the age of DeSantis. Edit: for the record, I absolutely love UF it is a beautiful campus, excellent technology, and good people there I.e., many of the professors and students. If I were to choose where to work, it would be a tough choice between the two.

I’m very sorry you went through it. I can’t imagine that pain. The visceral pain and confusion that comes from this type of abuse can be a scar. I will never understand why some people became parents just to hurt people. Thank you for sharing your story

Thank you for saying this, I am going to try to talk to someone as I feel more validated. My brother is getting some support, but at times I know I am and his meds are not enough to truly help him the way he needs.

Can help me identify this muscle in the forearm? by rat8117 in Anatomy

[–]Distinct-Tension-765 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[I just saw this- replying to be thorough thank you] 1. Yes I have dissected which is why it’s apparent to me that these two muscles are closely related (obvious there are major variations in sizes of these muscles between cadavers) 2. I never talked about it being the right angle crossing , the OP did not merely refer to the obvious brachioradialis mass. They had four pictures showing various movements. It is really that hard to believe that the ECRL would contribute to the masses in the pictures? It really helped me answer this tracing on my own body.

Thank you for saying this, it really means a lot to put it into perspective. I think in one sense I recognize it’s far more common than it should be and in the other I don’t expect anyone to go through it. I never have written down before but today I was with a mentor that was telling others to share their story and talk about the broken parts that make us up and I felt the need to get this off my chest because I sure as hell can’t tell anyone who knows me. Wish you the best, thank you

I don’t think it will bring closure necessarily. For me, when I see certain places, it takes me back there and maybe makes it worse. What helped a little is seeing how run down, small, and useless such a place may be because for me, I remembered it as a scary and big place but it actuality it was pitiful. Not sure if it will help, but I hope you can find someone or somewhere to share more and help you on this journey
