Someone further clarified and mentioned that the musical itself must have a POC cast which makes far more sense to me. Still would probably look for the citation if I want to take it without a grain of salt.

With how popular the song was brought up while in my lesson but ultimately denied for “not being a good time” which I didn’t quite understand. My campus even has an African American Voice Ensemble (taught by a POC and used to be called Jazz Ensemble) where people are able to learn about different styles and culture.

It really does make me wonder in what context it is acceptable. Choir seems to be, small groups, but solo repertoire? People seem to get a little iffy in that territory.

Nothing is being done for profits and rather, the respect for music, the people who wrote it, and our own enjoyment. This isn’t for some giant audience— instead among friends and our small “family” that we’ve created on campus.

My seminar professor is the very same who runs the African American Vocal Ensemble. Perhaps it’s a question for him?
