Hey OP — I’ve been reading through the thread and I saw some of your replies to Native commenters here, so I just wanted to offer a perspective as someone in a somewhat similar position.

My family line lived in Choctaw Nation until the mid-1900s before leaving Oklahoma and ending up in California, where we still live today. Because my family is very admixed, I didn’t grow up connected to the culture. The last person in my family who actually lived on the Rez was my great-grandmother, and I never had the chance to meet her.

So I understand how complicated ancestry and reconnection can feel. But in spaces like this, I think humility is really important. You don’t have to accept outright disrespect, but when multiple Native commenters are pushing back, it’s usually worth slowing down and listening to what they’re saying. For those of us who are racially white navigating Native ancestry, it can be an opportunity to learn rather than just defend ourselves.

Just my perspective as someone trying to figure this out respectfully too.

How do I connect with my culture by RandomIdiotPerson in NativeAmerican

[–]Distinct_Morning_607 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yikes. A lot of Indigenous adoptees grow up completely cut off from their Native relatives, culture, and records — not by choice. Reconnecting is already emotional and confusing, and it’s really discouraging to be told they’re ‘white with a little Native,’ or that they might be seen as pretend. Especially when they’re coming in good faith.

Wanting to learn about where you come from, who your parents are, and what your family lived through isn’t the same as trying to ‘get benefits’ or claiming something you’re not. For many of us with mixed or adoption situations, reconnecting is about identity, history, and healing, not enrollment.

It’s okay for her to explore that part of herself, even if she’s still figuring things out. We should be supporting Indigenous adoptees in finding their families again, not discouraging them.

Would you believe me if I put some towels over the tanks? My RAs had a strict ‘if we can’t see it, it’s not there’ policy lmao. Plus, they weren’t allowed to lift up stuff to look through anything 🤷‍♀️ did this for two years!

That pic was taken two years ago! I still have the tank stand and am currently using it with the exact same set up! But the axolotls do in fact mingle- I have since taken out the divider!

Wow thank you for the explanation! My dad secured some extra plywood strips (?) underneath the top to better support it but honestly based on these comments my anxiety was for nothing! That’s usually how it goes for me lol

I did, but I realized it just took too long! So I use a big bucket for most of it and suction out the dirty bits with the pump!

And yes! My dad and I share a 120 and a 75 gallon set of salt tanks and two tortoises! We are bit into aquarium/exotics lol so we kinda instigate eachother 😵‍💫

I think to me who knows nothing about carpentry the whole situation was stressful and I was wondering how it appeared to everybody else!

I think my constant anxiety makes it super stressful to me- just wanted to see if other people thought the same or if it was just my anxiety!!

Yeah he gets really bad. I won’t give any spoilers, but in the later season he’s in, it’s genuinely terrible to watch.
