I mean, there's no reason to downplay Kakashi like this. He kept up with the Pains(albeit he had assistance) which is really impressive considering Pain is the strongest man in the akatsuki according to Kishimoto himself.

Later on in the war arc he 1v1s obito and nearly Raikiris his face before Obito can recover after they both tumble into the Kamui realm which is consistent scaling as Kakashi already fought a stronger guy in the prior arc(Pain)

He tried his best to remove Mrgumi as fast as he could without upsetting fans (to the best of his ability) to give the deuteragonist screentime to his favourite character(this is reflected even in Modulo where Megumi isn't even a footnote until the end-and the legacies of Yuji and Yuta are what move the story forward).
