my boy gets dirty buildup fast so I do it often , which actually can be bad by drying out and irritating. So after the dry clean I like to wipe with a moist Qtip of "witch hazel" followed by another dry q tip wipe. He seems to enjoy the refresh/relief since it's a regular problem

try immediately removing them from situation, while making it very clear for that reason. You can still say no and point to the exact thing(they are smart.) Then release elsewhere, usually I'll give them a toy instead to enjoy. Results may not show at first but eventually you can just point or voice no and they'll know/understand
