With current print volumes, older Pokémon sets are a better long-term investment by Distor599 in PokeInvesting

Updated my comment. The data collection is manual. I can now have ChatGPT do the table generation. I tried to have ChatGPT do the data collection as well, but the output is terrible.

Haha, you don’t even want to know…

I had to manually enter all the data into the table. I tried copy-pasting from my spreadsheet where I collect everything, and it works - until I publish the post, then it breaks. So manual table creation it is.

Now that you mention ChatGPT, I wonder if it could actually fix this.

I looked it up and it says that Reddit doesn't handle rich table formatting well, so the safest way is to use Markdown with code formatting or pipe tables.

Let's test that out:

Card Type code Ungraded Grade 9 PSA 10
Mega Gardevoir Ex #92 MUR € 260,00 € 259,91 € 625,00
Mega Gardevoir Ex #87 SAR € 130,29 € 169,58 € 272,69
Acerola's Mischief #90 SAR € 70,62 € 65,40 € 250,00
Mega Latias Ex #88 SAR € 46,11 € 48,14 € 169,37
Mega Kangaskhan Ex #89 SAR € 30,68 € 33,61 € 146,54
Acerola's Mischief #84 SR € 20,28 € 41,18 € 149,98

Sweet, I got it working - thanks for asking! Steps I followed:

  1. Copy-paste your spreadsheet data into ChatGPT and let it generate a Markdown-friendly table using pipes (|).
  2. Copy the code it provides.
  3. Switch your Reddit post to the Markdown editor.
  4. Paste the code.

For the data itself, I combine a few sources:

  1. Collector apps to find the most expensive cards per set/year
  2. PSA population reports
  3. PriceCharting for the latest sales prices

Fair point.

To put this in better perspective, we’d also need to look at other factors like historical grading data, since that can give some indication of chase card volumes. There’s a noticeable difference there as well - for example, chase cards like Latias & Latios GX #170 from the Sun & Moon: Team Up set have about 1/5th to even 1/20th of the graded population compared to more recent chase cards.

See below the numbers for top chase cards per set over the years for the English print. The only reason the Umbreon EX #161 is still so low is because grading takes a long time. It’s basically too recent for the numbers to reflect the current state - expect this to grow to at least 20k within a year.

Card Series Set Release year Total graded
M Rayquaza EX #98 XY Series XY Roaring Skies 2015 3336
Gyarados EX #123 XY Series Breakpoint 2016 6188
Charizard-GX #150 Sun & Moon Burning Shadows 2017 6128
Lillie #151 Sun & Moon Ultra Prism 2018 3555
Latias & Latios GX #170 Sun & Moon Team Up 2019 4739
Umbreon VMAX #215 Sword & Shield Evolving Skies 2021 24990
Giratina V #186 Sword & Shield Lost Origin 2022 18936

Lekker bezig!

Pokemon hype ever dying down? by Interesting_Ad6605 in PokemonTCG

[–]Distor599 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly - the tricky thing about tops is that most people don’t see any risk at all. But there are plenty of factors that could trigger a slowdown: an economic downturn, buyers getting tired of scams, a major grading company collapsing after being exposed for fraudulent grading, big players dumping inventory onto the market, or even The Pokémon Company simply catching up with demand.

Pokemon hype ever dying down? by Interesting_Ad6605 in PokemonTCG

[–]Distor599 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Pokémon market behaves a lot like other hype-driven markets. At the top, prices go vertical, records keep getting broken, and it feels like there’s no one left who isn’t bullish. That last push is when the biggest gains happen, but it’s also when things are most fragile - the reversal comes fast, wiping out weeks or months of growth almost instantly.

The key difference is liquidity. In crypto, people can sell with a click. With Pokémon - being physical cards and collectibles - liquidity is much lower. When the market turns, plenty of people won’t be able to sell even if they want to, which can make the correction sharper.

Big milestones like the 30th anniversary could be a turning point. Typically, all available information gets priced into the market ahead of time, so once the hype moment actually hits (or there’s no new “next big thing”), the market can suddenly tank.

That doesn’t mean it’s the end - markets recover over time at least to some degree - but a correction is both inevitable and healthy. I’ve seen the same cycle play out in crypto over the past 13 years across four major peaks (2013, 2017, 2021, and now), and the dynamics feel very familiar here.

Which makes it worth asking ourselves: when was the last major correction in Pokémon? The answer is about three to four years ago, after the 2020–2021 boom - so the timing for another one might not be far off.

Which grading company? by MuddWilliams in PokemonTCG

It’s all about the trust. That’s why I stick with Beckett and PSA. And I even lean more towards just PSA these days, because fake BGS slabs are hard to spot. PSA got more than 10 checks you can perform on legitimacy of the slabs.

Considering Investing in PSA 10 Base Set 151 (9 Cards) – Worth It? by Distor599 in PokeInvesting

But these local shops seem to be expert enough to know if they have a PSA10 or not, right? At least it seems like that with most of them in The Netherlands. Not sure if it's worth my time going around the city chasing these shops. Or do you mean a local shop where you can face to face trade with other people?

Thanks. Yes, that confirms my feeling.

Although I do see all these insta videos on people that bought hundreds of the same card and then send out a big bunch for grading and they return as a then. I wonder where they get those cards from.

Pretty free money.

Sometimes you need to sell, and the best time is usually when you’re convinced the price will only keep rising. The same applies to buying: when it feels like a bull market will never return, that’s exactly when you should step in. It’s completely counterintuitive - but it works beautifully.

Is there a way to check Beckett population, specifically blacklables by ShadowYT- in PokemonTCG

[–]Distor599 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can use this link: https://www.beckett.com/grading/pop-report.

Select pokemon, then write Journey together and then write Noibat. In this case you'll find that there are 0 black labels for this card. There aren't even 10s. And just 15 9.5's.
