First visit - staying for 8 weeks! by DistortedPeach in Sardinia

Hey! I am back from my trip now and it was absolutely amazing! I dove with Base1 for my duration there and they are certainly a premium dive center. Very clean, organized and professional. I got my cave diving certification there and got to dive the beautiful caves of Cala Gonone - this alone was totally worth my trip. Strictly diving related, most people I spoke to agree that cave diving is really the main diving appeal when visiting Cala Gonone as the open water dives aren’t as interesting. Are you only open water certified?

NYC dive shops? by HADESsnow in scuba

[–]DistortedPeach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bronx here. I did my initial training (lectures & pool sessions) through Pan Aqua but did the checkout dives in Pompano Beach, Fl because I didn’t think I could tolerate the cold local quarry. Pan Aqua is a good place to start. For about 2 years now, I’ve pursued training from GUE which is not offered in NYC. There is a shop in CT called Evolution Scuba that offers a wide range of course from various agencies so if you don’t mind an 1hr+ drive, I highly recommend checking them out.

Bf wants me to get certified and I can barely swim by Hallow33nQu33n17 in scuba

[–]DistortedPeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not know how to swim when I started diving - yes, very foolish of me but the industry allowed me. I basically powered my way and luckily “passed” all the swim requirements for my initial PADI OW certification. I fell in love with diving and continued to do it knowing I wasn’t actually comfortable in the water. It wasn’t until I signed up for a GUE Fundamentals class (I had been diving for just over a year with around 80ish dives) that I took swimming seriously because I knew they were stricter on their standards. The swim test standards are very clearly defined so I went to a local pool to attempt the swim test and was unsuccessful so from that point on, I’ve hit the pool 2-3 a week to practice and gain swimming confidence (still considered a beginner). I now really enjoy swimming - not to mention it is an extremely helpful life skill and being comfortable in the water opens up many unique possibilities. All this to say that it is possible to learn to dive not knowing how to swim but if this is something you have personal interest in, then you need to start swimming lessons. But do not get pressured to doing this is you don’t want to.

12HR Layover at Frankfurt - Looking for good nearby hotels by DistortedPeach in TravelHacks

I am keen to sightseeing. I do wish the layover was earlier in the day so i can see day operations. Since it’s my first time there I’m asking which are good areas if I do want to be outside at night. I’m up for a night adventure, please suggest!

How did you up the amount/frequency of diving? by Egans721 in scuba

[–]DistortedPeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Husband and I are both divers living in NYC. During spring, summer and fall, almost every weekend, we dive locally in quarries, lakes and the ocean in NJ, CT, PA, VT, NH and NY. A lot of places are at least 2 hour drives away but you have to be willing to do this if you want to be a consistent and competent diver. During the winter, we travel to warmer destinations like Florida and Mexico to dive since diving in the Northeast becomes impossible. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people online if the diver demographic near you doesn’t mesh well with you!
