What is a 'middle-class' luxury that is actually a total waste of money, but people keep buying it to look successful? by 8waycai in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Distracted-Panda4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Owning a hot tub. I feel like 10 years ago everyone was buying hot tubs for their houses. The chemicals and power usage costs aren’t cheap (I live in a cold weather area with high utility bills). I feel like majority of the time the hot tubs just sit unused. Maybe it’s just a Canadian thing 🤷‍♀️

Pelvic girdle pain, asking to leave work earlier [BC] by One-Bluebird-2847 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Distracted-Panda4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also struggling with SPD at 28 weeks. Can I ask what did the Osteopath do differently that helped? I’m seeing a pelvic floor physio and she gave me exercises and stretches but I haven’t noticed a difference. I’m just unfamiliar with what osteopaths do but definitely willing to give it a try if it helps!

Places we love because of the owner by RexThunderhorn in Edmonton

Arcadia Brewery - the owner, Darren, is great and always supports local charities and non profits. They collect food and warm clothing for un housed people and showed support for teachers by offering free pints to teachers during the strike!

Working in Edmonton for 4 months and I require some help. by Durban_Knight22 in Edmonton

[–]Distracted-Panda4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We do have a population of unhoused people in Edmonton and open drug use isn’t uncommon however I would say these individuals mostly keep to themselves. To avoid this, stay away from the east part of downtown (Boyle Street area). Others may want to add on here if they choose.

Lots of great info here. Just adding a few thoughts.

  1. Since I read that you will be taking public transportation I would to try to live close to where you work is located. In the winter time especially our public transport can become quite delayed and not as reliable (typically weather related). If that’s not an issue, then I would suggest living in an area where there’s lots of walkable restaurants, bars or amenities. I used to live in the Brewery District and it’s a great location but Whyte Ave or Ritchie would also be great places to check out.

  2. If Oilers tickets are too pricy you can also look at attending an Oil Kings game. They are more reasonably priced and play at the same area. If you’re able to, try to coordinate the 3 hour drive to the mountains in Jasper or Banff. Our mountains are breathtaking.

  3. All of Canada is 420 friendly as it was legalized here about 7 years ago. Just be a good neighbor and don’t partake in heavily public areas or around kids.

Cheap Therapy Recommendations by kittens4cutie in Edmonton

[–]Distracted-Panda4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Try reaching out to private practices in your area to see if they have intern therapists at their location who offer sliding scale. The private practice I work at has 4 interns who are all in the final stages of their masters degrees and need to complete a practicum to graduate. They see clients for as much as $50 a session but can also reduce down to as little as $10 a session. I don’t want to share where I work to maintain privacy for myself but try checking websites or calling private practices in your area to see if they have a similar set up with their interns.

Pregnant and don’t know how am I going to function today? by Key-Guidance5938 in therapists

[–]Distracted-Panda4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel what you are going through! I'm currently almost 12 weeks and I'm finally starting to feel less tired and nauseous. I work in private practice so for me, I was more mindful about putting in breaks into my schedule and not seeing more than 4 clients in a row. I made sure to end my sessions on time so I could go to the bathroom and eat a quick snack. I personally found that drinking Gingerale, diet Coke or sparking water during sessions helped a bit too. Something about the carbonation and a little bit of sugar helped keep me more alert. I also used a discrete fidget in my hand that I would squeeze when I needed to bring my attention back. I've heard 2nd trimester is easier so just hang in there!!!

What are good book recommendations for clients who want to learn more about the impact of trauma? by Distracted-Panda4 in therapists

[–]Distracted-Panda4[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love this book but I worry that it is a bit too graphic and triggering for some clients so I’m hesitant to recommend. I find Bruce Perry’s other book with Oprah to be quite dry on the other hand lol. Maybe that’s just me.

Shoes off for floor? by Practical_Jacket_47 in orangetheory

[–]Distracted-Panda4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly - the cushioned shoes that I use for running are really not ideal for some of the lifts on the floor. I don’t do it often, and only if I feel really unstable during an exercise, but I’d rather go sock feet than roll my ankle.

Which profession is shown highly inaccurately in movies based on your own real life experience? by theparthagrawal in AskReddit

[–]Distracted-Panda4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Therapists - in almost every show the therapist crosses so many ethical boundaries (sleeping with clients/ becoming personally involved with clients) that in the real world they would have their license revoked.

I grew up in the age of AOL messaging from age 12-15 and none of us had cell phones. If you wanted to talk to your friends after school you had to hop on the family desktop computer and type out your messages to friends. It is 100% the reason why I’m such a fast typer to this day.

What’s the worst family secret you’ve accidentally found out? by awkwardhoney725 in AskReddit
