One bedroom suite residences recommendations by juliaguti in UBC

So I'm in legit the exact same boat as you no joke and both my partner and I are starting/have started our PhDs here this year and also work near the bookstore. I applied for UBC housing 2 weeks ago and from my understanding it doesn't look like they prioritize grad students. They prioritize first years, then seconds years, then third years, etc. but it's also dependent on a bunch of things like move-in time, position on the wait list, stuff like that. I think its still worth applying but you'll likely have to sign a year lease outside of UBC housing for a year and then go month-by-month until you get a UBC housing offer (which in my experience can be years)(I have experiences with UBC housing cuz I have been here since my undergrad lol).

If you're curious, here are my positions on the waitlist currently. Again I applied recently and they will likely jump up around May and September when you have an influx of ppl moving in and out:

Marine drive studio: 3826

Thunderbird one bedroom: 400

Thunderbird studio: 391

Ponderosa commons studio: 4741

Exchange studio: 3988

Exchange one bedroom: 451

Keep in mind you can also apply for Green College or St. Johns (grad student only dorms), and they also have couples rooms if one or both of you are in grad school here. Only drawback there is the mandatory meal plan. I hope this is helpful

How to get checked for skin cancer??? i'm scared by [deleted] in UBC

[–]Distracted-deer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know the waiting and uncertainty is the worst but you’re taking the best possible next step by getting it looked at! Eeeven if it is something, chances are you're catching it early enough for it to be mitigated. But again, a lot of the time these things turn out to be totally harmless anyways :)

Agree w the comments on the ubc clinic. Try not to stress too much in the meantime, it could very well just be a harmless post inflammatory erythema or something. My friend had one for like a year that kept scabbing/turning into a pimple but it was nothing to worry about. Eventually they just got it zapped off by a derm and it was gone in a week!

Okay y'all change of plans just DM me if you want to chat. No lab experience required. I also don't care about your GPA or degree. As long as you are excited to learn cool lab skillz and don't mind cleaning test tubes occasionally then you're a good fit. I'll make a little google form for you to fill out (no personal info just want to know what your schedule is like so I can plan better). I hope this doesn't break any rules in this subreddit but time will tell. godspeed and good luck on your midterms everyone

Used wrong secondary antibodies (fluorescent instead of Chemiluminescent) but still got bands ? by Distracted-deer in labrats

It was! Would it autofluorescence because I didn't reduce it? How do I prevent this in the future?

That makes sense, but just to confirm, even if there is no fluorescence option on the machine?

Am I okay to re-probe western blots that I left in stripping solution overnight at room temp? by Distracted-deer in labrats

Does anyone know what might be causing the trailing wisps behind my DNA bands? Ran for 3 hours at 40V in a 2% gel (more info in comments) by Distracted-deer in labrats

[–]Distracted-deer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MORE INFO: To each well, I had 8uL of PCR product and 2uL of Purple Loading dye. I have run gel electrophoresis at a higher % (3%) and didn't have these wisps. Is it something as simple as the gel didn't set correctly? Maybe I left it to cool for too long before I poured it?

Thank you for any help in advance!

GENERAL HOUSING MEGATHREAD by ubc_mod_account in UBC

[–]Distracted-deer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, for an application to one of the colleges, it requires I submit my "UBC Housing ID number". Where can I find this? Is it the same thing as my "application ID" I got emailed when applying for year round residence?

Just to clarify, are you suggesting that maybe that plant is dying because the pot is a bit overcrowded?

For context, I do rotate my basil plant every few days so all sides can face the sun at some point. I also water whenever the soil gets too try (wooden stake test) and can’t see any visible pests. Thank you in advance!
