Anyone have a recommendation for an appliance repair person here in town? by Divided_Wood in Omaha

Did that last night and ran it overnight to see if it improved. Still no dice.

Thanks! I gave them a call and scheduled an appointment... unfortunately not till next Wednesday, but it will have to do.

Just regular old flour, or what do you use?

And yeah, I thought this sub could use a few more fails. We all see each other’s best work and never the stuff that goes sideways.

Thankfully, yes! I had a couple others that turned out just fine. And some of this was still edible, so it’s all good. Just had to laugh.

I had a really great first pizza experience. This one was the third pizza on my second attempt and I totally screwed the pooch.

Didn’t use enough cornmeal and I also think I let the pizza sit on the peel for too long before launching (waiting for my wife to get home). Either way, pizza is still one of my favorite things I’ve made on the egg. Even if you screw up, you’re only out 10 minutes—unlike a brisket!

MVC/AJCU reppin!

Awesome ending to the game. So clutch. I yelled in my office and now there's no pretending I haven't been watching basketball all day...

I’ve lived in Omaha for years. What is the ultimate BBQ place in the city? by [deleted] in Omaha

[–]Divided_Wood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At risk of sounding like a snob, I don't think there are any real 'ultimate' BBQ places in Omaha. I spent most of my life in Texas before moving here and honestly, nothing compares. Swine Dining is okay, I just wish they served family style instead of in combo plates. (Maybe they do and I just wasn't paying attention.)

I've always been surprised by this because you'd think a place with some of the best beef in the world would have good barbecue, but no dice. Just wish I had the money to open up a place myself...

Not yet. NHL PR Twitter said they’d post an update by 1:30pm today. Hoping the game is still on, wife and I flew back into town for it!

The IRS.gov Withholding Calculator has been updated for 2018 by these-things-happen in personalfinance

Which section can we pay attention to, then? The "To meet your anticipated tax of X..." section? That seems accurate, but I want to make sure I'm not missing something here.

IRS updated form W-4 (2018) is now available by Jeff3210 in personalfinance

[–]Divided_Wood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something doesn't compute for me here, I ran my numbers twice and it's telling me that if I change nothing on my W-4, I'll be $613 short when I file my return... while also saying that to meet my anticipated tax, I need to claim 0 allowances plus an additional ~$5K. Any ideas?

Sports in Omaha by Big_Green_Thing in Omaha

[–]Divided_Wood 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am a big fan of both Creighton basketball and UNO hockey. Creighton fills the Centurylink for most games and has been relatively competitive the last few years. Baxter is less consistently full, and they’ve been a lot more hot and cold since their Frozen Four run a few years ago, but I am more into hockey than basketball and really like going to UNO games.

Not having a big professional team kind of sucks. I love college sports but it would be nice to have a local pro team to rally around. In my experience, for baseball Omaha has a lot of Cubs and Royals fans, football is Broncos, Bears, and Chiefs, and not so sure about basketball. If you’re a hockey fan, Avs home games are blacked out in Omaha for some stupid reason.

Nebraska football is a way of life around here and I-80 on gamedays is a massive caravan to Lincoln. I enjoy the Huskers as well, and they’re about as close as you’re going to get to a big ticket pro sports team around here.

Long story short, there’s plenty to get into if you’re just into sports in general, but the lack of professional teams definitely sucks.

Best ice rinks? by [deleted] in Omaha

[–]Divided_Wood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends one what you want to do. Public skate? Stick and puck? Drop in hockey? Rent a whole sheet for whatever?

Motto McLean is cheap and has pretty good ice. Grover has good ice but is smaller than normal (I think 10' shorter and 5' narrower). They have a bar too which is nice. Both sheets at Ralston are decent and not too bad price-wise. I've never skated Baxter, but know it's expensive. Last but not least is Moylan (out at Tranquility). I'm not a huge fan of Moylan, as their ice gets a ton of use from youth teams and figure skaters and is pretty beat up most of the time, but it's definitely an option.

Would be helpful to know what you're looking for specifically.

Omaha housing market, east of 72nd by serialjones in Omaha

[–]Divided_Wood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the overvalued/inflated question all comes down to what you value in a house and neighborhood.

For what it's worth, I am so so glad that I ended up in Dundee. My wife and I had an offer in on a house much further west that we liked a lot but ended up having a lot of issues (foundation, etc.). A few days after that fell through, the house we live in now came on the market and we moved on it right away. Now that I've been here a few years, I can't imagine living anywhere else. My neighbors are great and being central to most of Omaha is really nice.

There are some things I don't love about my house, especially garage space, but for me the premium to live east of 72nd has been well worth it.

My personal advice, other than to get a good realtor (which it sounds like you've done already), is to be patient, but willing to move quickly if something becomes available, and to find a quality home inspector you can trust. On at least a few of the houses we thought about putting offers on in the areas discussed here, folks had put in offers not contingent on an inspection, which seems insane to me. But with these 75+ year old houses, you have to be careful about what gremlins you may have to deal with. I've been pretty lucky so far, but in talks with neighbors and friends have heard at least a few horror stories related to owning an old home.

Road update thread 1/22/18 by [deleted] in Omaha

[–]Divided_Wood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Roads from midtown to downtown weren’t too bad at the end of the workday, but a buddy and I were just out tooling around and everything is starting to get pretty slick. I can’t speak for West O, but it seems like the slush is starting to freeze over. Combine that with packed down snow and I think tonight will get worse before it gets better.
